Jinal Mehta liked thisJinal Mehta liked thisNow that I’ve worked through it, a few things stood out. The first two parts really set the tone and foundation. Having seen the evolution of technology from the 90s through to today, it’s clear this perspective he shared is earned, not theoretical. You can tell he’s been in the middle of these shifts. As someone operating in enterprise security, Part 2 especially resonated. It mirrors a lot of what I’ve seen and continue to deal with. Vulnerabilities, malware, phishing, and how these threat classes evolve over time are covered in a way that feels real and current. Part 3 is where I found myself slowing down and reflecting more. The focus on strategy, scoring, and the different ways programs can be approached is very comprehensive, but more importantly, it challenges my assumptions. There are multiple angles presented, each with tradeoffs. It forced me to think about where I might have blind spots. I know I found a few. The sections on implementation and measurement are just as important. They reinforce the need to clearly demonstrate to executives and boards how security programs actually enable the business to keep operating, not just stay protected. It also provides a way for security professionals that are grounded with different strategies to come together in a smoother manner. Part 4 was one I was especially looking forward to. Cloud, evolving attacker techniques, and of course AI. The pace of change here is real. There’s a tendency in the industry to either overhype or oversimplify this space. I think Tim strikes a solid balance. He lays out the risks, the techniques, and the practical mitigations that are currently known. For a book that’s already over 700 pages, I still found myself wanting more. I’d be interested in a future edition that goes deeper into major cybersecurity failures, more guidance on navigating the friction between security and the business, and a stronger focus on the value translation gap. That last one in particular is something I see often. Many strong security engineers struggle to connect their work to business impact. Closing that gap is what shifts the perception from cost center to strategic partner and strengthen the last aim of his book, communicating clearly to execs and boards. Thank you Tim Rains. This semester pushed me to think differently about how businesses compete, grow, and stay relevant. In 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 with Ike Silver, I learned how companies navigate competitive markets, from positioning and growth decisions to something that really stayed with me: 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 and how companies protect their space when competition gets intense. Through 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 with Arvind Bhambri, I deepened my understanding of how organizations make high-stakes decisions and build long-term advantage in uncertain environments. And in 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 with Ahmed Elshinnawy , I explored how companies go beyond competition using customer-centric thinking, design thinking, and business model innovation to create entirely new value spaces. Somewhere along the way, everything started to connect. Strategy, innovation, execution, all coming together in how you actually build products that matter. As I get closer to graduation, I’m really excited about stepping into 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 roles. This feels like the right space for me to bring together my background in 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 and build user-centric products that create real impact.
