Karin Fischer shared thisThere has been a remarkable reversal in applications by international students: For the upcoming fall, 59 percent of U.S. colleges said applications from overseas were down. Four years ago, two-thirds of colleges reported an **increase** in apps. A spring snapshot survey from the Institute of International Education found that both undergraduate and graduate applications were down, although declines were more substantial at the graduate level. Karin Fischer shared thisOne in four young scientists said they were reconsidering their plans to stay in the U.S. after President Trump's election, a big swing from just six months earlier. The largest decline in intent to stay in the United States, about 50 percentage points, was among European grad students and postdocs, according to a new working paper. The six-month drop for scientists from India was 38 percentage points, 24 percentage points for scientists from Latin America, and 21 percentage points for scientists from China. The decline is greatest among foreign scientists — but there was a “meaningful shift” among Americans’ willingness to pursue careers abroad, researchers found. Plus more #globaled news ... • The Trump administration has announced plans to rescind rules governing the Fulbright-Hays program and other international-education and foreign-language programming to allow for greater flexibility in selecting awardees aligned with “current and evolving priorities and needs.” • Kansas’s Republican attorney general agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration to end lower in-state tuition rates to some undocumented students.
