Every new AI integration whether instructional tools, data dashboards, or automated workflows creates additional access points that bad actors are actively probing. Ransomware attacks are increasingly targeting identity systems, third-party vendors, and poorly governed data flows rather than legacy infrastructure alone. This shift requires a leadership response, not just a technical one. Cybersecurity in an AI-enabled district is fundamentally about governance: clarity around data ownership, decision rights, vendor accountability, and incident response. Districts that treat cybersecurity as an operational afterthought will find themselves reacting to crises instead of preventing them. The most resilient systems are aligning innovation with risk management, embedding cybersecurity expectations into AI strategy from day one and ensuring leaders, not just IT teams, own the outcomes.
