David Logan, PMP reposted thisDavid Logan, PMP reposted thisCareer Growth Takes More Than Hard Work That was one of my biggest reflections after Monday night’s PMI Atlanta Chapter Dinner Meeting. The room was sold out. The energy was high. The satisfaction reviews came in above 90%. And the message from attendees was clear: 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟮. Noel Ransom Washington’s keynote, “You’re Doing the Work… So Why Aren’t You Moving?”, struck a chord because it spoke directly to something many project professionals quietly wrestle with: You can be certified. You can be capable. You can be doing excellent work. You can be delivering results. And still wonder why your career is not moving the way you expected. The problem is that hard work alone is not always visible work. Certification is not the same as strategy. Experience is not the same as visibility. Execution is not the same as influence. That message landed because it was honest, practical, and timely. That is why PMI Atlanta matters. PMI Atlanta is not just a place to earn PDUs or attend events. It is a professional growth ecosystem where project managers, agile professionals, consultants, business leaders, and career changers can build relationships, gain exposure, serve through volunteer leadership, and have the kinds of conversations that create momentum. But they paint a picture of project management that doesn't exist in the real world. 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 1. 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 → Stakeholder relationships trump perfect methodology every time → Your Gantt chart means nothing if key players don't support the work → Organisational politics kill more projects than bad processes 2. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗗𝗼, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘆 → Watch resource allocation, not what people say in meetings → The project that gets funding reveals the real priorities → "High priority" often means "high visibility" not "high value" 3. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗧𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 → Padding estimates is a game everyone plays but nobody admits → Developers build in buffer, PMs add contingency, executives cut both → Everyone pretends to believe the dates while planning for delays 4. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 → Project management courses teach theory, not reality → Real PM skills come from managing disasters under pressure → Experience navigating chaos beats credentials every time 5. 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 → Hours spent on reports that get skimmed or ignored → But the absence of docs gets you blamed when things go wrong → Cover yourself with paper trails, even if nobody asks 6. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗜𝘀 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 → Requirements evolve constantly, regardless of change control → "Just one small addition" becomes major scope creep → Stakeholders view scope as fluid while deadlines stay fixed 7. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗜𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 → Your best people get "borrowed" for other urgent priorities → Budgets get cut mid-project while deadlines stay the same → You're expected to deliver the same with less support 8. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘀 → Red status updates get ignored until problems become crises → Risk registers collect dust while preventable issues explode → Politics drives decisions, not data or analysis 9. 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 → Optics matter more than actual progress in many organisations → Communication skills trump technical expertise for survival → A well communicated delay beats a poorly explained success 10. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 → Responsible for everything, authority over nothing → You must influence without power, lead without control → Success depends on navigating influence networks 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀. They're the reality of modern project management. The best PMs don't fight these truths. They master them. Which one hits closest to home for you? What brutal truth would you add to this list?

Wingard, one of the University's longest-serving academic leaders, who served as dean of the College of Education from 1969 to 1992. Dr. Wingard passed away on July 11, 2026, at the age of 89. Dr. Wingard began his career at Central State University as the Director of Student Teaching before becoming the Dean of the College of Education in 1969. During his 23-year tenure as dean, he dedicated his career to educating, mentoring and preparing generations of future teachers and changemakers while strengthening one of the University's signature academic programs. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Faith Community United Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Drive, Xenia, OH 45354. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the service immediately following at the church. Interment will follow at Massie Creek Cemetery in Cedarville Township, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to support the Dr. Edward L. Wingard Scholarship Program at Central State University. Now, at the six‑month mark, it feels like the right time to reflect. A mentor once asked me to rank five things in order of importance: people, money, work/life balance, opportunity, and the work itself. People were, and still are, at the top of that list. That framework made my decision to join Phoenix Team clear. In just six months, this role has challenged me, supported me, and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. It’s pushed me outside my comfort zone and allowed me to show up as more of my authentic self. It reminded me that when you’re in the right environment, work doesn’t have to feel like work. What begins as stability can turn into staying simply because it’s familiar. That’s what came to mind listening to Jim Carrey talk about his father choosing the “safe” career instead of the life he really wanted. It felt familiar to me. When I was younger, I chose accounting for similar reasons. It wasn’t some lifelong passion. It felt: ↳ stable ↳ predictable ↳ responsible I was good with numbers. I knew I could build a solid career with it. And I did. I spent nearly 20 years inside a Fortune 100 company (MetLife) starting in accounting, then moving into larger leadership roles, leading teams, integrations, and eventually global transformation work. ↳ Bigger leadership roles ↳ More responsibility ↳ More visibility ↳ More pressure. From the outside, it looked like success. But internally, something was changing. I had spent years becoming: ↳ dependable ↳ capable ↳ the person everyone could count on. What I wasn’t stopping to ask myself was: Does this still fit the person I’m becoming? I think a lot of high performers sit with that question quietly. Because fear doesn’t usually announce itself loudly. Most of the time, it sounds reasonable. ↳ Stay where you are ↳ Don’t risk too much ↳ Be grateful for what you have ↳ Keep doing what makes sense. I stayed inside those thoughts for years. Then in 2021, my role was eliminated. And everything became very quiet. ↳ No title ↳ No clear next step ↳ No external identity to lean on anymore. For the first time in a long time, I had to really ask myself: → Who am I without the title? → What do I actually want now? → What decisions would I make if fear wasn’t leading them? That period changed me. I started doing deeper internal work. Paying attention to the beliefs shaping my decisions. Recognizing how much of my life had been built around practicality instead of possibility. Over time, things started opening up. ✨ I built additional income streams ✨ Started speaking ✨ Started writing ✨ Created a life that felt more aligned with who I had become That’s why mindset matters so much to me. Because mindset shapes: → what you believe is available to you → the risks you’re willing to take → whether you stay where you are or move forward And eventually, those beliefs shape your life. I don’t think everyone needs to walk away from everything they’ve built. But I do think many people reach a point where they realize they’ve outgrown an old definition of success. And sometimes the first step is simply being honest about what you already know deep down. 🎥 @investingauthority

The same salary. The same responsibilities. Yet one thrives while the other burns out. Why? Because culture influences performance far more than most people realize. Before accepting your next opportunity, ask yourself: • Will I learn from the people around me? • Does leadership earn trust or simply demand it? • Are people growing, or just getting through the week? • Do the company's actions reflect its stated values? Skills can be developed. Experience can be gained. But spending years in the wrong environment can quietly limit both. Choose a place where you're challenged, supported, and inspired by the people around you. Your career is built not only by the work you do, but by the people you do it with. Agree? 👍
