Lulu C. shared thisTl;dr: I’m among the 12,000 people impacted by #googlelayoff last Friday. It’s been a week with mixed feelings. I never thought I would have to leave #google in this way and I still feel too shocked by the email last Friday. Each time I left a team or a company, I always started writing my farewell email a week in advance. It’s a farewell not only to my teammates, but also to all the precious moments, accomplishments, learnings and contributions in that unique place. This is the first time I had no chance typing the most simple “bye” to my teammates. It's a late post but I really appreciate the support and courage from my awesome managers and great teammates. Honestly I held my tears until the moment I received this secret gift from them today. It’s a blanket with all my teammates’ names around me. Although I just transferred to the team not long ago, I’m really thankful for being a part of it. It was an unforgettable journey here. BTW, I came to Google during the pandemic and didn’t really get a chance to take a picture with my Noogler hat. But finally I wear it today when I hold my farewell gift. The layoff happened right before the Chinese New Year. It was not the new year eve I supposed it would be. But I’d like to use the saying for new year “辞旧迎新 (Out with the old, in with the new)” to cheer myself and everyone impacted up! Now I look forward to exploring the possible journey in front of me. I still remember how much support and help I received from all these people during the last round of Uber layoff in September 2019. But gradually I found my best quarantine daily routine. We still have sunshine, we still have blue sky, fresh air, warm ground, and sometimes we can also find some moment as precious as a twinkle star. I joined to work on AR but I knew that a floor planning tool was the killer way to integrate 3D onto the Houzz platform. 6 years later Houzz 3D Floor Planner is one of the killer features of the website. It's been a pleasure to build such an amazing tool with an amazing team of people. I'm not quite sure what's next for me, but I'm excited to move on to this next chapter of my life.

My years at Stripe were both rewarding and formative. Beyond being an exceptional place to work — and home to what my wife and I consider the best lunch in the tech industry — Stripe possesses data that reflect an increasing share of the global economy, and I was fortunate enough to be able to contribute to some of the most ambitious and high-impact data initiatives. I’m deeply grateful for the chance to learn from and collaborate with so many brilliant colleagues - I look forward to staying connected with you, and can’t wait to see how you’ll continue to uplevel Stripe’s data practices! This week, I’m excited to share that I’ve joined MAI Agents — a lean but mighty team building AI agents to transform the trillion dollar performance ads market. What drew me in was a rare combination: Real customer needs with strong early traction, a genuine data moat not dependent on public data or labeling companies, and a team with deep expertise in both AI and ads. Scaling data here will be a major challenge, and that’s exactly what makes me excited. I look forward to building, learning and sharing more as we go! The beautiful campus, combined with the incredible energy and positivity from all the students, made this an unforgettable experience. 💕 🤝 First, I want to give my deepest thanks to every student who joined this summer. Many of you came with your own successful management experience and unique domain specialties and chose to take this course part-time, and made significant progress along the way. Some of you began with limited familiarity with data and analytics but have since developed the capability to manage a team or even build your own. Seeing your progress has been incredibly fulfilling for me as a teacher. The course was indeed intense, packed with a wide range of cases and concepts, covering everything from data analytics, leadership, and management, to marketing analytics, finance, supply chain, fraud analytics, and various enterprise-level applications. Each session was filled with dozens of slides, and we even added extra sessions to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. My goal was to equip those without a data background with the skills to make data-driven decisions and effectively manage data teams. Remember, the most important classroom experience comes through the network and connections you've built. The course drew heavily from my ten years of experience, and I’m grateful to all the guest speakers who shared their valuable insights. Special thanks to Anirban Deb and Leo (Wang) Yao traveling such long distances to join us in person, Christine Baylet Bergeron for her brilliant legal perspectives, Rachael Maltiel Swenson for her expertise in product growth leadership, and Ethan Evans for taking time out of his busy schedule to share his leadership insights and invaluable personal experiences. I also want to thank acknowledge Jason Yoong for his behind-the-scenes coordination. I want to thank all the people who helped me design and market this course. Also, all the Stanford staff, especially Angel E., for their tremendous support. This was my first time designing this course, and your help was invaluable. Before I taught, I was extremely grateful for Bret Waters for his BUS 217 course and in that course, I learned from him what makes a great teacher. I firmly believe that data will continue to be one of the most critical topics and resources of our time. Whether it’s algorithms, models, predictions, or experiments, they all rely on data— the most fundamental evidence in sicence. Confucius once said, “Study, and then you know your deficiencies; teach, and then you know your difficulties.” Over these three months, I’ve learned a great deal, especially inspired by the rapid progress of the students. I wish all my students, guest speakers, and Stanford colleagues the very best. This summer teaching experience has been deeply fulfilling—thank you!

I’d like to share some recent investigations from my team (Alibaba Accio) on agentic RL training with process rewards. In addition to outcome reward, we additionally add principal process reward model to judge non-verifiable intermediate agentic steps. We propose Reward Normalization (ReNorm) that merges and calibrates local process rewards and global outcome rewards. We observe that such dense reward signals improve agentic RL training over outcome only methods on search benchmarks. Checkout our paper if you are interested!
