98% of HR Professionals are burned out.
That was a recent headline from a Forbes article (linked below.)
Some may dispute the findings. I don't.
We've had to carry the hearts of our people for the entirety of our careers, but never more so in the last two years. And that became such difficult work, but we plowed through it for so long - until we couldn't. We sacrificed our own wellbeing for the wellbeing of our people for what we thought was a short duration - until it wasn't.
HR pros, I see you, and I am you.
For so long I didn't put a name to what I was feeling, because I didn't want to. And the data shows that burnout was nearly inevitable - for all of us.
What does burnout look and feel like? If you've become cynical, irritable, have to drag yourself to work, feel disillusioned, lack satisfaction, have changing sleep habits, use substances to help you feel better (for me, definitely food), have headaches, stomachaches or other physical problems. It could be any or all of these things.
I recognized burnout in time to start to recover. Challenging exercise, prioritizing sleep, reading, relaxing, eating better and spending time with friends and getting back out in the world helped me.
Many others take more drastic measures, changing jobs, thinking it may help. And it may, but it may not. Or, they quit all together. That's the right move for some, but not for everyone.
What works for me may not work for you, but see below for some resources.
And remember, you are not alone.
