Michelle Breyer shared thisSometimes you meet someone and have no idea that they'll become an important part of your life. That's exactly what happened eight years ago when I met Jeannie Ralston, founder of NextTribe. Jeannie is an accomplished journalist, but she's also a remarkable community builder. Long before most companies recognized the power and influence of women over 50, she saw something others missed: millions of women entering a new chapter of life looking for connection, adventure, purpose and friendship. She created NextTribe to serve them. Initially I helped out with events and wrote articles, and then had the privilege of joining the board of NextTribe. Since making the decision this year to step away from SKU and semi-retire, one of my passion projects has been assisting NextTribe with marketing because I believe deeply in both its mission and its potential. Four years ago, I connected Jeannie with one of my favorite SKU mentors Jeannie Edmunds. She is now the COO for NextTribe. Together, the Jeannies are unstoppable! NextTribe has successfully evolved from a vibrant community into a premier travel company for women over 50, bringing together incredible women from around the country for transformative experiences in places like Mongolia, Portugal, Japan, and beyond. But the magic of NextTribe isn't just the destinations. It's the relationships, confidence and sense of possibility that women discover along the way. Kinda Lincoln and Catherine Casias are working on some big initiatives. Raven + Lily is an Austin-based, mission-driven fashion and lifestyle company. The brand partners with artisan women around the world to create clothing, jewelry, handbags and home goods while providing fair wages and economic opportunities. The brand has recently collaborated on projects with such partners as American Airlines Cargo, Austin City Limits TV and the San Antonio Spurs to create limited-edition merchandise. Michelle Breyer shared thisLast night’s SKU Spring ’26 Showcase was a huge success, and the founders of all eight brands - After Noon Foods, Alive & Well Kombucha, The Crease Beast, Dohjoy Bread, OOSO Iced Tea, Seoulmate, The Nice Company and Yee Mama - absolutely crushed it on stage. From the quality of the presentations to the confidence and growth each founder showed, it was such a powerful reminder of why SKU is the nation’s leading CPG accelerator. In just three months, these founders transformed not only their businesses but the way they tell their stories. I was so honored to sit with the amazing Kelly Stevens from 7 Creative, who created all of beautiful pitch decks. What made this Showcase especially meaningful for me was experiencing it from the audience for the first time. I loved cheering on the founders and seeing so many people I care about - mentors, former co-workers, founders and friends - who have all been part of this incredible journey for me. I had no idea then that it would be the beginning of a journey that would include 16 SKU Showcases. Even when some were done virtually during COVID, this community still found a way to show up for founders in such a meaningful way. The upcoming Showcase for the Spring '26 Track Tuesday, May 19 at Rowling Hall at Texas McCombs School of Business will feel a little different since leaving the SKU Crew. For the first time, I’ll be sitting in the audience cheering on the founders in the audience. And I couldn’t be more excited! SKU's fabulous team - Beau B., Heather Buffo, Adrien Petersen and Julie Fabricant - has been in the trenches with these founders for the past three months. They’ve poured their hearts and souls into helping these brands grow. It’s the late-night pitch revisions, the mentor calls, the hard conversations about margins, packaging, distribution, pricing, operations and growth. It’s watching mentor teams rally around brands, making introductions, reviewing decks, troubleshooting challenges and helping founders think bigger. This incredible SKU team has built an environment where founders can push themselves, ask hard questions and come out stronger on the other side. That’s part of what makes SKU so special. It’s not just an accelerator. It’s a community built around talented mentors who genuinely care about helping founders succeed and a great team dedicated to providing each founder with everything they need. The Showcase is the culmination of all of that work, and the energy in the room reflects it every single track. I first saw these brands back in December when we sampled dozens of products. A place where founders could meet buyers, investors, operators, retailers, distributors, and the people who can genuinely change the trajectory of a brand. Today, that vision has a name: Rooted Expo. I'm so proud of what he building along with an incredible team of CPG/event experts. I'm even more excited to see this industry in Texas, and across the country, rally around it. Texas has become one of the most important places in the world to build a consumer brand, and it's about time we had an event that reflects that. I started one anyway. Turns out that wasn't even the hard part. I've been going to CPG trade shows for about seven years. And a couple years ago something kept nagging at me. We don't have anything down here. Texas has the brands. The talent. The hospitality. We're the #5 CPG economy in the country. But we didn't have a trade show that was actually ours. Can you believe that? So founders here were flying out of state just to get in front of a buyer. We started smaller. DFW CPG. Just bringing the community together. Happy hours, coffee meetups, showcases. Fifteen brands at that first showcase. Some of them ended up in Central Market. Some in 7-Eleven. And it occurred to me. Why not a show of our own? I'll be honest about where I was. I know nothing about trade shows. But I know a little about events, and I know a lot of good people who'd rally around this. They did. As I got to know Gilbert, I also learned about the Gazelle Foundation and the mission behind it. The belief that every person deserves equitable access to clean water deeply resonated with me. What makes that mission so powerful is the community behind it. Gilbert has a rare ability to bring people together—to make everyone feel welcome, inspire them to support one another, and remind us that meaningful change happens when people unite around a shared purpose. That same spirit is at the heart of the Gazelle Foundation.
