It's with a heavy heart I write this post, I'll miss the many talented people and inspiring leaders I worked with. As a mixed Native girl, I grew up in a world far away from silicon valley. I never saw people look like me, in places like this, advocating for a vision that included my community. Meta changed that for me. I served on the Native@ Leadership Council, bringing Indigenous employees + allies together to grow our community globally and represent Native voices in places I never thought possible. I'm forever grateful! Working at the intersection of social impact and technology helped me realize my passion for product design and building WITH experts and communities through ✨ codesign.✨ The work I enjoyed most was learning how technology can be the greatest extension of our humanity when designed responsibly. Advocating for users meant examining every design decision/assumption, down to the pixel, to get it right. The lessons, people, and experiences forever changed the way I think about and approach problems. This work is more important than ever, especially as the velocity of AI increasingly changes our lives, particularly for trust and safety risks. As for what's next, I'm looking for roles related to consumer tech, responsible AI/ innovation, trust & safety, research, design, program/project management or mission-driven organizations. Michael Waters shared thisWell deserved recognition for truly important work.Michael Waters shared thisWe are incredibly proud to share that Griffin Glynn, Micah Hoffman, Kait Rickard, and Kyle Naish were recognized by the Arkansas State Police as recipients of the Distinguished Service Award. This recognition is one of the highest honors ASP presents to partners outside the agency, honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to major investigations and the shared mission of protecting vulnerable children. Through their work supporting the Human Trafficking and Missing Persons Unit and the VALOR Task Force, this team has helped locate missing and exploited children across Arkansas, contributing to the recovery of 204 children in 2025 alone. Their analytical expertise, technical support, and deep commitment continue to make a meaningful difference for children, families, and the investigators working tirelessly to bring kids home safely. We are deeply grateful for our partnership with the Arkansas State Police — especially the leadership and vision behind the VALOR Task Force, which continues to model what collaborative, child-centered investigations can look like. Congratulations to Griffin, Micah, Kait, and Kyle on this well-deserved recognition. We also want to recognize Kyle Naish, who received a second honor that day for his work supporting the 2025 Devil’s Den homicide investigation. Kyle has dedicated his career to helping solve complex and urgent cases — and to equipping investigators across the country with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to better protect children and pursue justice for victims and families. That kind of expertise, shared generously in service of others, creates ripple effects far beyond any single case.

Michael Waters shared thisExcellent!Michael Waters shared thisThis week marked the end of the Spring semester at University of Maryland Global Campus, where I had the privilege of teaching 𝗖𝗠𝗔𝗣‐𝟲𝟮𝟱 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. This graduate‑level course dives deep into the practical application of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘬 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 (𝘙𝘔𝘍)—a foundational skill set for students pursuing the M.S. in Cybersecurity Technology, MS in Cyber Management and Policy or MS Data Analytics. Our primary text this semester was "Cybersecurity Risk Management" by Cynthia Brumfield and Brian Haugli. I’ve known Brian through his work at SideChannel, and earlier this term I reached out to share feedback on the book. Not only did he appreciate the insights—he generously sent me a signed copy today. Cynthia and Brian have created a resource that is both accessible and grounded in real‑world scenarios, making a traditionally dry topic engaging and relatable for students. Their work played a meaningful role in helping my class build confidence in applying RMF concepts to organizational environments. Grateful for the opportunity to teach at UMGC, super proud of my students, thankful to dedicated authors, and excited to continue helping cybersecurity professionals build the skills our industry needs. #cybersecurity #umgc #nistrmf

I've said it a million times. Delete CMMC from existence and the same problem remains: The DoD has programs and data that absolutely demand 3rd-party assurance. The absurdly naïve policy dating back to 2011 of reliance on self-attested compliance must be addressed. Does that mean every piece of data? No Does that mean every single contractor? No Does that mean the solution must be the current version of CMMC? No But one way or another, the phone will ring, and people will be forced to prove what they have been claiming. Change the name. Change the logo. Call it whatever the hell you want. Accountability will arrive all the same.

I signed an offer letter on Wednesday night and am currently onboarding to join an amazing team. More news on that next week. 😎 Getting to this point has been a journey, and I want to thank all of you who reached out to check on me, share a cup of coffee, and let me know about open roles. Your support meant a lot to my family and me, and I truly appreciate it. Over seven weeks ago, I was notified during a Zoom call that my team and I were part of a corporate restructuring, and just like that, I was unemployed. Since then, it has been challenging to process what happened, avoid blaming myself, focus on finding a new role, and realize that the job market is quite bent for many of us right now. Here are some observations from my search: 1. Bots are flooding job postings with AI-enhanced resumes, making it hard for HR teams to differentiate between candidates. Submitting a resume on a job portal often feels like screaming into the void, with little chance for a response. I submitted my resume for over a dozen roles and only received one call from an internal recruiter, which was a pleasant surprise. 2. After speaking with numerous executive recruiters who had nothing for me, I noticed that many roles were now being sourced by internal business recruiters relying on employee recommendations. Networking at events and leveraging personal connections and networks are critical in the current job market. Word of mouth is key right now. 3. The rapid changes driven by AI are notably impacting job descriptions. It’s common to see CISO and CIO roles being combined into new broader tech/security positions that include AI Governance and AI Security. While this sounds promising, it often isn’t reflected in the compensation for these new roles. I feel that the compensation charts many HR teams use do not accurately reflect this new norm. In closing, for those still searching, remember to take breaks and manage the stress of the job hunt. I found that I was getting down at times due to the lack of responses. Taking a walk, working on my latest Star Wars LEGO build, or enjoying a ball game with family helped me refocus and re-engage in my search. Don’t be hard on yourself, leverage our #community when you can, and be well. One of the most impactful moments from my visit was seeing the footprints of a patient before and after treatment — a dramatic visual reminder of how life-changing this work truly is.
