Patrick Hurley liked thisPatrick Hurley liked thisI don’t usually share personal milestones here, but this is one that has taught me as much about life and business as any professional experience. There is no universal formula for success. No perfect playbook. No shortcut. No secret technique. But after stepping onto a Jiu-Jitsu mat for the first time in 2011 and earning my black belt in 2024, I’ve come to believe that many of the principles that matter in Jiu-Jitsu are the very same ones that matter in business. Think about it: * Show up consistently, even when you don’t feel like it. * Progress is rarely linear. * Learn from people more experienced than you. * Accept that some days you’ll get humbled. * Keep improving through small adjustments. * Persistence often beats talent when talent lacks discipline. You spend years learning, making mistakes, facing setbacks, questioning yourself, and showing up again the next day. In Jiu-Jitsu, some days you win. Some days you learn. Now that I think about it… That sounds a lot like sales. In both worlds: * Fundamentals matter more than flashy moves. * Ego gets in the way of growth. * Setbacks are part of the journey. * The people who succeed are usually the ones who keep showing up. After all these years, one lesson stands above the rest: Growth is rarely about one big moment. It’s about consistency, resilience, and the willingness to keep moving forward when progress feels slow. So, are we talking about Jiu-Jitsu… Or are we talking about sales?
