Jay Sanderson posted thisOne of the most dangerous lies we tell ourselves is: “I’ll do it when things calm down.” We’ll take the trip when work slows down. We’ll call our parents when we have more time. We’ll apply for the job after one more year. We’ll start the business after we save a little more. We’ll tell someone how we feel… eventually. The problem is life doesn’t have a finish line where everything suddenly becomes quiet. There will always be another project. Another bill. Another obligation. Another reason to wait. I once heard someone say, “One day” is the busiest day on the calendar. I think they’re right. Most regrets aren’t born from failure. They’re born from hesitation. Not because we couldn’t… Because we kept believing there would always be another chance. If something matters to you, stop waiting for the perfect moment. Perfect is usually just fear wearing a nicer outfit. The future isn’t promised. But today is. Go make the call. Take the first step. Submit the application. Say the words. Because someday you’ll either be grateful you started… …or wishing you had. What’s one thing you’ve been putting off that deserves your attention today?

Jay Sanderson posted thisI saw someone pushing a shopping cart today at the grocery store. It didn’t stand out to me because they were shopping. It was because one wheel was stuck. They weren’t moving in a straight line. Every 10 a 15 feet they’d have pull it harder in one direction, adjust their grip, and fight the cart just to keep it going straight. It made me wonder… How many of us are doing the exact same thing in life? From the outside, people see us moving forward. What they don’t see is the amount of energy we’re spending dragging something that should have been left behind. Maybe it’s resentment. Maybe it’s a relationship that ended years ago. Maybe it’s a mistake you still haven’t forgiven yourself for. Maybe it’s a job you know isn’t right anymore. Maybe it’s trying to prove something to people who stopped paying attention a long time ago. Here’s the interesting part. The person pushing that cart probably doesn’t even notice how much harder it is anymore. They’ve adapted. That’s what we do. We get so used to carrying unnecessary weight that it starts to feel normal. We convince ourselves everyone struggles this much. They don’t. Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn’t learning a new skill, finding more motivation, or working another 10 hours. Sometimes it’s simply fixing the wheel. Or better yet… Getting a different cart. As leaders, we ask our teams why productivity is down. As parents, we wonder why we’re exhausted. As individuals, we question why life feels so heavy. But we rarely stop long enough to ask the better question: “What am I dragging that no longer belongs in my life?” Because forward is still forward. Because what we know is more comfortable. But it doesn’t have to be this hard. Take a look at what you’re pushing today. You may discover the problem isn’t your effort. It’s the resistance you’ve accepted as normal.

Jay Sanderson posted thisWhen did we decide that being wrong was worse than pretending to be right? I had a coaching client recently who was wrestling with a decision they had made months earlier. Deep down, they knew they had made the wrong call. But instead of changing course, they kept trying to convince themselves it would somehow work out. I asked one question. "Are you trying to make the best decision today... or justify the one you made yesterday?" Silence. Here's the reality. Every decision we make is based on the information we have at the time. We use experience. We use intuition. We use advice. We make what we genuinely believe is the best choice. Then life gives us new information. Somewhere along the way, we decided that admitting we were wrong meant we were weak. So instead of stopping the train, getting off, and boarding the one headed in the right direction, we put our heads down, stay in our seats, and hope the destination somehow changes. It doesn't. One of the hardest conversations I've ever had was with my own kids. I had handled a situation poorly. They probably never would have known. I could have left it alone and protected my ego. Instead, I sat them down and said, "Dad made a mistake." It was uncomfortable. It was humbling. It was also one of the most important parenting moments I've ever had. Because I didn't want my kids to believe adults are supposed to be perfect. I wanted them to know that honesty is more important than pride, and that character isn't built by never making mistakes. It's built by owning them. Whether you're leading a company, raising children, or building a relationship, vulnerability isn't a leadership flaw. It's one of the greatest demonstrations of confidence. Your GPS doesn't argue with you when you miss a turn. It simply recalculates. Maybe it's time we did the same. Making a wrong turn doesn't define your destination. Refusing to recalculate does.

Jay Sanderson posted thisBarney Lied To Us. There. I said it. For years, Barney looked us directly in the eyes and sang: "I love you, you love me, we're a happy family..." And as children, we believed him. What Barney failed to mention was that adulthood was coming. Because apparently the real lyrics should have been: "I love you, you love me, until someone doesn't reply to my email, takes credit for my work, leaves dishes in the sink, cuts me off in traffic, or forgets our anniversary..." Let's start with work. Barney taught us sharing is caring. Then we entered the workforce and discovered there is always an employee who shares everything except responsibility. Barney said, "Please and thank you are the magic words." Yet somehow many leaders believe "per my last email" is the adult version. He taught us everyone should be included. Then we sat through meetings that absolutely could have been emails and wondered if exclusion might occasionally be a gift. And don't even get me started on "clean up, clean up, everybody do your share." Now let's talk about relationships. Barney taught us that if you care about someone, you tell them. Simple. Adults somehow turned this into a 47-step process involving mixed signals, screenshots, overthinking, analyzing punctuation, and waiting three hours to reply so you don't seem too interested Barney said, "I love you." Adults say: "Have a safe drive." "Text me when you get home." "Did you eat today?" "I saw this and thought of you." Same sentiment. Different software version. Then there's friendship. Barney convinced us friends would always share. Meanwhile, half of adulthood is discovering who your real friends are after moving, changing jobs, getting divorced, succeeding, or failing. And then there is the biggest lie of all. Barney taught us that everyone is special. As adults we spend decades trying to prove we are special. We chase titles, promotions, followers, recognition, validation, and approval from people we don't even like. The truth is Barney wasn't completely wrong. He was just leaving out the advanced class. The advanced class teaches us: Employees won't always agree with you, but they still deserve respect. Leaders won't always get it right, but they still need feedback. Spouses won't always understand you, but they still deserve honesty. Friends won't always be available, but they still deserve grace. Relationships aren't built because everything is easy. They're built because people keep showing up when it isn't. Maybe Barney wasn't lying after all. Maybe he was giving us the simplified version before life introduced deadlines, budgets, difficult conversations, performance reviews, teenagers, mortgages, and group texts. But if Barney were rewriting the song for adults, I think it would sound something like this: "I love you, you annoy me, sometimes we disagree. We both make mistakes from time to time, But we're still family." And honestly? That's probably a lot closer to the truth. 😆

Jay Sanderson posted thisOne thing I've always found interesting is that one of the quotes most often attributed to Buddha is: "The biggest mistake we make is thinking we have time." Whether Buddha actually said it or not almost doesn't matter. The message hits hard because most of us live as if there will always be another opportunity. As leaders, we think we'll have time to thank the employee who quietly carries more than their share. Then they resign. As employees, we think we'll have time to learn that new skill, volunteer for that project, or tell our boss what we need to be successful. Then the promotion goes to someone else. In relationships, we assume there will be another dinner, another date night, another conversation, another chance to say "I love you," "I'm sorry," or "I appreciate you." Then life reminds us that tomorrow is a privilege, not a guarantee. What's interesting is that most regrets aren't about the things we did. They're about the conversations we delayed. The risks we postponed. The gratitude we never expressed. The people we assumed would still be there when we finally got around to it. I see this in coaching all the time. People spend years waiting for the perfect time to start the business, change careers, repair a relationship, have the hard conversation, lose the weight, ask for help, or chase a dream. The perfect time never arrives. Life isn't a dress rehearsal. There is no "someday" section on the calendar. There is only today. Call the employee. Thank the mentor. Compliment your spouse. Apply for the job. Take the trip. Ask that person out. Have the conversation. Apologize to the person you need to. Because one day we'll all discover the same thing: The opportunity wasn't lost because we didn't have enough time. It was lost because we thought we had more of it than we actually did. Challenge: Before you go to bed tonight, send one message you've been meaning to send, make one phone call you've been meaning to make, or tell one person something positive you've been meaning to tell them. Don't wait for the perfect moment. The perfect moment is usually the one we're currently wasting.

Jay Sanderson posted thisOne of the biggest mistakes in hiring, leadership, and relationships is the pursuit of perfection. We often create a list of everything we want and spend our time looking for the one person who checks every box: - The perfect employee. - The perfect leader. - The perfect spouse. - The perfect partner. However, perfection is a poor hiring strategy and an even worse relationship strategy. For years, I advised hiring managers: "Don't hire for today. If you hire someone who can do everything the job requires on day one, don't be surprised when they eventually leave for a bigger challenge." People seek growth, development, and opportunities to become more tomorrow than they are today. Unfortunately, many managers lack the time, interest, or ability to develop people; they simply want someone who can perform at the highest level immediately. Leadership differs from management. Leadership focuses on potential. When evaluating a candidate, I encourage leaders to create three lists: - A's: Skills, experiences, and characteristics that are Awesome. - B's: Areas where the person may not Be exactly where you'd like them to be, but they are capable and successful enough today. - C's: Areas where they fall below expectations and either Change or be Cut. Next, ask yourself: - Are the B's truly acceptable, or are you expecting them to perform like A's? If they need to become A's, do you have a plan, time, and commitment to help them get there? Now consider the C's: - Can they realistically become B's? - Can they learn the skill? - Can they gain the experience? - Can they develop the confidence? - Can they improve with coaching, mentoring, and feedback? If the answer is yes, you may be looking at someone with tremendous upside. Interestingly, we understand this concept almost everywhere except with people. We start businesses for future potential, not just current performance. We buy homes for their good bones, not because every room is perfect. We plant trees knowing they won't provide shade today. We invest in our retirement, instead of pleasure today. Yet, when evaluating employees, leaders, friends, or partners, many expect a finished product or immediate benefits. The reality is that the people who have had the greatest impact on my life were not perfect when I met them. They had strengths, weaknesses, and potential - just like I did. The question was never whether we checked every box, but whether we were willing to help each other grow. The best leaders don't just identify talent; they identify the future. They recognize potential and create environments where people can become more than they were when they arrived. I try to remind my coaching clients that they can be a leader in all aspects of their life. And so can you!

Jay Sanderson posted thisAs a leadership coach, I've learned something interesting. The same three questions can strengthen a marriage, improve a team, and deepen almost any relationship. Not because they're easy. Because they're uncomfortable. Try asking your spouse, your employees, or even your closest friends these three questions: 1. What is something I have done that unintentionally made you feel unimportant? Most people don't wake up trying to hurt others. Yet many people carry small disappointments, frustrations, and wounds that were never intentional. You can't fix what you don't know exists. 2. Is there a time recently when you needed more from me than I gave? This question requires courage because the answer may reveal where we've been distracted, overwhelmed, or simply absent. But it also creates an opportunity to reconnect before resentment takes root. 3. What do you wish I understood better about your experience right now? This may be the most powerful question of all. Because people don't just want solutions. They want to feel seen. The challenge is not asking these questions. The challenge is listening without defending yourself, explaining yourself, or justifying yourself. Just listen. Make this a regular part of your relationship. Let them know you will be asking them these three questions once a month. (Some people will need time to be sure you are serious and will wait until they feel safe being honest. ESPECIALLY employees. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person isn't advice. It's understanding. And sometimes the fastest way to improve a relationship is to stop trying to be understood and start trying to understand.

Jay Sanderson posted thisRandom observation... Raising kids and managing employees are way more similar than most people want to admit. For example... You can explain something clearly. You can explain it twice. You can ask if they understand. They'll confidently tell you they understand. And then immediately do the exact opposite of what you just discussed. Both groups want more responsibility until responsibility arrives. Both groups somehow leave lights on in rooms they aren't using. Both groups can find time to scroll their phones but somehow can't find time to complete the thing you asked for three days ago. Both groups get nervous when you start a conversation with: "Can we talk for a minute?" And both groups somehow believe that if they avoid a problem long enough, it will magically disappear. It won't. The biggest similarity, though, is this: The best results rarely come from controlling people. They come from teaching, coaching, encouraging, and creating an environment where people want to do their best. Whether you're raising children or leading a team, eventually you realize your job isn't to do everything for them. It's to help them become the kind of people who can do it without you. Although... If anyone knows how to get either group to replace an empty toilet paper roll, I'm willing to pay consulting fees.

Such a great post! As someone who has negotiated 1000’s of offers, I have said no based on how it was asked compared to because of what was asked. I always want the candidate to be excited to join us but still have to look out for the best interest of my company.
I have led the hiring of 10’s of 1000’s of people and over my 26 year career as the head of recruiting I have only rescinded ONE based on the negotiations.
It is always worth it!

Jay Sanderson liked thisJay Sanderson liked thisWe just wrapped our 2026 Burger King Roadshows, and one thing is clear: the strength of this business rests firmly in our Franchisees and restaurant teams. Last week, me and our BK Leadership Team had the chance to spend time with operators across the U.S. who are deeply invested in their teams, their Guests, and passionate about this brand. Roadshows are an important touchpoint for us to align on where we’re headed and talk candidly about the opportunities and challenges in front of us. I particularly enjoyed sharing voicemails, emails, and LinkedIn messages from our guests. Some of the messages were filled with glowing praise. Some of them were scathing reviews of poor service and hospitality. Every single one of them, whether praise or criticism, was an imporant call to action. There’s real power in getting face-to-face with Franchisees, hearing directly from Restaurant Leaders, sharing wins and losses, and taking action together. Strategy is fine. But you win in this industry by executing consistently at the restaurant level, and that only happens when all of us focus on one outcome. At Burger King, the purpose is simple – the BEST burgers, great tasting food, served with care. Hearing the creative ways operators are motivating teams, driving performance, and delivering for our Guests gave me a lot of confidence in where we’re headed together. Thank you to every Franchisee and leader who showed up, shared perspectives, challenged ideas, and brought their absolute best to the table. These touchpoints matter – and they make us stronger as a system.
