I wanted to return to the discussion in the room Thursday at the Traffic Club of Chicago event. Early in the day Mike Regan compared the stages of grief to how companies are reacting to tariffs. But as the day progressed, it became clear that those stages might better describe how the transportation industry is responding to technology adoption — with many still in the "Denial" phase. I expected more debate around DOT and government actions like ELP, non-domiciled CDL, and immigration enforcement. But carriers in the room had mostly accepted that as reality and shifted the focus. If you watched “The Great Freight Debate” livestream, you saw the energy build toward the end when the conversation turned to the future of driver and dispatch roles and autonomous trucks. That discussion actually started earlier during a tech panel and carried through the afternoon. Talking with carriers, many agreed that DOT issues will be resolved in time — the real long-term question is whether technology can truly replace human drivers, dispatchers, and problem solvers. And the room seemed split. Some carriers are already using AI for dispatch, appointments, and check calls. Others in the room were skeptical, even saying things like “a driver will never talk to an AI bot.” Meanwhile, some saw drivers as essential for decades to come, while others envisioned scaled autonomy within 10–15 years. My takeaway: the future of freight isn’t far off, arguably it's here now. Every company is somewhere on the Denial-to-Acceptance spectrum. But in a fast-moving industry, the sooner you move toward acceptance, the better positioned you are to invest in your future.
