Instead, I was told I wasn’t ready while being asked to train the person who got the job. For 6 months, my team and I had divided up the responsibilities after our Director left. I had already told leadership I wanted to grow. I worked longer hours. I volunteered for projects. I said yes whenever someone needed help because I believed that’s what commitment looked like. Then the meeting happened. Leadership told me there was a confidential Director opening. The candidate had already been selected. Before I could even ask why none of the managers had been considered, I was told the company needed someone who was ready immediately. Then came the part that stung the most. They asked me to train my new Director on our systems, processes, and how the team operated. The goal hadn’t. I also realized something else. Working harder wasn’t going to earn me a promotion. So I changed my strategy. I stopped: ❌ Working long hours. ❌ Saying yes to everything. ❌ Volunteering for every project. I started: ✅ Choosing work executives would actually notice. ✅ Investing about $5,000 to close the skill gaps that were holding me back. ✅ Finding an executive sponsor who could advocate for me when promotion decisions were being made. ✅ Preparing myself to leave if my growth depended on it. Here’s what happened next. I was promoted 4 times in the following 5 years. The last promotion took me into an Executive HR role. The biggest lesson wasn’t about working harder. It was understanding that promotions are based on how leadership experiences your impact, not how exhausted you are. Applying to postings isn’t working and I’m not breaking this job market. Long-time recruiters I know say they have never seen a job market this bad in 30 years, including in the worst recessions. In my case I’ve spent through my savings, got evicted and am living in my car. After posting this for months, I still don’t have a job but many people have said encouraging things and I have raised some money via a GoFundMe to survive in the near future (thanks to those people) but I also know it won’t last so I have to keep it going. (link at the end). Here’s the rest of my situation. I was laid off from my job at Google almost 2.5 years ago when there were a lot of layoffs. I keep ATS confirmation emails from job applications in a folder and at two years since the layoff, I had applied to 3700 jobs and emailed 2200 founders. I won’t do a new count. Bottom line, I'm getting nowhere. I need a regular job (or monthly contract). It probably has to be a REFERRAL from you because of the hiring environment today. Also, FYI, my present job is just the very rare short term contract. Very rare. The last gig they had me do was a year ago. If you aren’t aware of it, the economy is in really bad shape. Inflation is high, foreclosures and evictions are way up and a lot of jobs are being sent overseas. My background spans high-growth startups and tech giants, with a proven track record of placing specialized talent. I've placed people with all sorts of backgrounds including engineers, finance execs, marketing, artists and others. At Google I focused on security engineers from the FBI, CIA, etc. PLEASE mention me to your friends or hire me. Please. I’m going keep the GoFundMe going because after 2.5 years, I don’t know when this job market will loosen up. Shaquille Lee, MBA reposted thisShaquille Lee, MBA reposted thisI don’t think people fully understand what this economy and job market are doing to families right now until it becomes their reality. A year ago, our life was manageable. We had bills, responsibilities, debt like most people, but we could afford our life. Then layoffs happened. Applications turned into rejections, interviews became rare, and months later we’re still trying to recover. Our lease is up July 1, and we’ve come to the reality that we can’t afford to stay. My husband’s income alone isn’t enough to cover the cost of living, debt payments we accumulated trying to survive this period, insurance, and everyday expenses while I stay home caring for our 16-month-old daughter. We’ll most likely have to move in with my parents 3 hours away just to make it through. That means my husband will likely have to leave his job, our daughter could lose her insurance, and we’ll be starting over while still carrying the weight of everything we’ve fallen behind on during this season. And the hardest part is… this story isn’t unique anymore. There are so many educated, hardworking people doing everything “right” and still struggling to survive right now. People are quietly drowning financially while trying to smile through it online every day. I’m not posting this for pity or sympathy. I’m posting it because I think we need to be more honest about what a lot of families are facing right now. The job market is exhausting. The cost of living is overwhelming. And sometimes people aren’t failing they’re just trying to survive an economy that changed faster than their lives could keep up with.

Of course I didn't fall for it but played along just in case he was just the worst recruiter ever as the job was enticing and perfectly aligned with my skillset. But the upsell was there and he was fairly smooth. Beware scammers are truly everywhereShaquille Lee, MBA reposted thisSo. I'm a bit annoyed. I am finding that there are recruiters who will message you or email about an exciting job, and that they saw your profile, and you seem to be a great match, and they want to submit you. That's great. That's awesome, so you send your resume, and in less than five minutes later, you get an email back, saying that your resume isn't ATS compliant. But wait! The recruiter then says that he/she have a trusted person who can help me, and would I like to get an introduction. I ask: If you're giving this person my resume, then why do I need to do anything with it? I was told that they still put the resume through the ATS, and I was a strong candidate. I reply, saying that I don't have the money for this. I get a response explaining that their contact could give me a deal, but I need to act fast because the decision for the job was going to be made in two days. 😒 Most recently, I got one from an email for another job. I sent my resume, and I was told that I needed 3 things for submission. 1. My resume 2. An Executive Bio 3. A SWOT assessment. I sent my resume, and then told the recruiter that I had never heard of these other two things. I was told that it wasn't unusual to not know what those are as specialized materials that most candidates don't usually have prepared. Then, of course, the recruiter says he works with a specialist who does these things, and would I like an introduction? 😒 This all feels very scammy, but maybe I'm thinking too much about it. I'm not, though. Right? Also, can someone tell me what an Executive Bio and SWOT assessment is? #opentowork #jobhunt #unemployed #jobsearch

But one thing to consider, especially for Twin Cities-based software engineers, is the relative job security of working remotely for a company based in Silicon Valley or NYC. We see headlines of layoffs at Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc., pretty often. It might be worth working for a Twin Cities-based company where, sure, you have to come in 2-3 times a week, but you have better and closer relationships with leadership when you're seeing them face to face. What do you think, is this crazy talk?

Company treats me well and every year they've given me a raise that was 10-15%. I got it good. You can't get that everywhere." It's so easy and simple to Retain employees lol

We're upgrading our server at work to 2025.1, so I thought I’d give this new book a read. To say it is light reading is an understatement. A better adjective is comprehensive. If you’re a beginner or someone just looking to level up your Tableau, this book has something for every skill level. For me, it was a review of LOD‘s and table Calcs. I enjoyed a deeper dive into data modeling and designs I don’t get exposed to at work. Joshua Milligan did a great job covering all the bases and the new features in Tableau 2025. The new Dashboards that Deliver is a great book, but it won't help you learn Tableau like this one does. Check it out if you want to round out your Tableau skills.
