“You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, well, you just might find, you get what you need.”
–The Rolling Stones / my impromptu answer to “What’s your family motto?” around the campfire as a boy scout 😂
After seven years of building with some of the greatest in early-stage venture, my time at
Album has come to an end. The memories are many & the cherished relationships formed, innumerous.
To our audacious Founders & operators, thank you for inspiring me to think big & make things happen.
To our supportive investors, thank you for believing in us, especially in the early days when we had little track record.
To my now fellow Album Alumni/Interns, thank you for your tremendous help through the years.
To those who have mentored me in the community, thank you for helping me figure things out.
To the young professionals thinking to themselves, “Just make it through a year and then it won’t look that bad on your resume.” Hang in there. Show up.
When I started out, my first task of every day was to fill a water bottle for someone else, and I often ran errands that had me questioning my career path. As I reflect on those tasks, I don’t regret doing them – they got my foot in the door to much more.
The phrase ‘Jack of all trades' was originally used to describe a playwright who was always hanging around the theaters. He would help with the stage, the set & the costumes. He would remember lines & try directing. This so-called jack of all trades was William Shakespeare. The full phrase is ‘a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.’
Find ways to “hang around the theaters” of your career & be helpful. Nothing is beneath you. Familiarize yourself with every detail of your craft, not just the parts that are glorified. Early on, that will mean mending the costumes, not writing the plays.
And to my colleagues at Album, thank you for an incredible ride! 9 unicorns, 28 exits, $231M in proceeds, and you’re just getting started –
Diogo Myrrha,
John Mayfield &
Sid K. know how to pick ‘em, & there’s no one better to have in your corner. If I’m an entrepreneur raising an early round, I’m knocking down their door.
And when you enter, you’re greeted by one of Utah’s most pleasant – the lovely
Lisa Thomas who has gone to great lengths to take care of our people from thoughtful gifts to strategic events & more. She knows what it means to create genuine connection & this is why she’s becoming one of Utah’s super connectors.
And for those of you who haven’t met the newest addition to our team, you heard it here first, venture’s next great CFO will be the wiz
Wilson Sivertson. Never seen anyone pick up on so much so fast.
As for me, I’m taking time to think about what to pour my heart & soul into next. A recent trip to visit one of my favorite portfolio companies & to watch my Georgia Bulldogs provided inspiration for my M.O. going forward shared in photos & comments.
