Today, we're launching Ploy: the all-in-one marketing platform that turns your website into your company's growth engine. It was a real privilege to have a hand in building Webflow over the last dozen years as the founding CTO, but it was actually my time standing up the marketing team that I reflect on the most. I experienced firsthand the power of the web, and how the website is the center of your business. AI changed how we market. Foundation model apps can generate assets. Point solutions can optimize pieces of the funnel. But nothing runs the whole growth system: your site, brand, CMS, CRM, campaigns, analytics, SEO, AEO, and customer data all working together. I've spent over 15 years as an operator and investor working across the physical economy — starting in solar, scaling manufacturing through trade wars and commodity price spikes, then as an investor watching a generation of climate companies succeed and fail. Now feels different from anything I've seen before. Lots of learnings, but the pattern is clear: the science matters, but it's rarely the thing that separates the companies that scale. What matters is the economics. The market entry. The ability to move from working prototype to deployed infrastructure. More than any time in my career, the fundamentals are moving. Cost curves. Customer demand. Energy, grid infrastructure, materials, manufacturing, and supply chains being rebuilt. The companies breaking through aren't winning because they're better for the planet in theory — they're winning because they're better in practice: cheaper, faster, more reliable, safer, easier to deploy. When better systems win at scale, people and the planet are better for it. At the risk of sounding cliche and predictable, this post would miss the point if I didn't call out the Founders behind it all. I've had a front-row seat to what they actually carry. The hundredth pitch. The redeyes. The obsessive, unglamorous work of building something real in an industry that doesn't forgive wishful thinking. At every company that cracked it — there was a team who refused to let the hard parts stop them. Their grit, humility, and inventiveness humble me. That's one of the quiet privileges of this work. That's why Mike Schroepfer, Evaline Tsai, PhD and I started Gigascale: to back early-stage Founders rebuilding the physical economy, and to actually be helpful to them on the hard path from technical breakthrough to deployed infrastructure. Since launching in 2023, we've backed over 25 companies across energy, grid infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, materials, food & ag, and AI for physical systems. We've had a lot of help along the way. Fellow venture investors — people who could reasonably see us as competition — who made introductions, answered our rookie questions, and cheered us on to the collective goal. I looked into what it would take: in-person visits, coordinating trustees, multiple trips, and gave up before I started. So the trust sat there, unfunded, for years. Today we're launching trust accounts on Mercury Personal. Most trust accounts are dead ends. You open one, park cash in it, and interact with it as little as possible because the tooling is so bad. Eliza was along for a >1000x growth ride at Fram Energy and fully committed to the opportunity when we were only serving one tiny property. She laid the foundations for the way we interact with our customers, run our internal operations and deliver quality assurance at Fram. Every day Eliza brought dedication, rigor, empathy, structure and trust to her work at Fram. She played a big role in establishing our high commitment, low ego, joyful culture. To me, an important mission component of founding Fram is that talented people can grow their skills and get stretch opportunities here, and they will take that growth and do incredible things in other places. Whether Fram becomes a huge company or no longer exists in 10 years; that impact will be around for decades. As her role and the stakes grew at Fram, it has been very rewarding to see Eliza develop in all kinds of ways. When newer team members speak about her, they mention qualities that seem innate to them, but have become such a natural part of her toolkit through consistent hard work and curiosity. In parallel, over the past 2+ years I was constantly needing to grow, experiment and evolve in my role as founder and CEO alongside Eliza, and it is meaningful that she was there to see several chapters of my journey. In Dutch we say that someone "has heart for the business" if they really care about the place they work and will always go the extra mile. Tommy Leep liked thisTommy Leep liked thisI think we're entering a new era of AI. The first wave was about helping us work faster. Writing faster. Coding faster. Analyzing data faster. The next wave will be about helping us make better decisions about the physical world. About water. About energy. About infrastructure. About the resources our economies depend on every day. Last week, I had the opportunity to see that shift firsthand. At Trellis Impact, we joined leaders from Colgate-Palmolive, Primo Brands, and Equinix to discuss how AI is becoming an enabler of sustainable growth. At the Alliance for Water Stewardship Forum, we shared the stage with Coca-Cola Equatorial Bottling Company to explore how technology is helping accelerate water stewardship. Across both events, I noticed something that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago. The conversation is no longer: "Why do we need AI if we already have a process?" It's: "How can AI help us make better decisions, faster?" That shift matters. It means AI is moving beyond productivity. It's becoming decision intelligence for the physical world. When we started Waterplan, we believed companies shouldn't have to choose between sustainability and growth. The best decisions should improve both. Today, we're fortunate to work with organizations that are proving exactly that, not because AI replaces expertise, but because it allows experts to focus on what they do best: making better decisions, faster, with better data. One moment from last week stayed with me. Seeing Waterplan above the San Francisco skyline, the city where our journey began, while spending the week discussing AI and sustainable growth with some of the world's industry leaders. It wasn't just a proud moment for our team. It was a reminder of how far this conversation has come. I believe that in just a few years, companies won't be asking whether they should use AI to manage critical resources. They'll be asking how they ever managed without it. We're only getting started. That means leaving my CTO role at Schneider Electric and moving from energy technology into construction, where software is fast becoming a differentiator. HITT is one of the top general contractors in the country. I plan to make it one of the top physical-world software companies, too. Thank you to the Schneider team for a great run. I’m especially proud of the agent-based systems we shipped this year. Time to get to work.

Talking to users and thoughtfully integrating their needs and wants was woven through everything we did at IDEO—threaded through every prototype and product decision. Reading my colleagues Joanne and Leo's latest work brought that to mind. They describe a future where research runs continuously, with AI agents recruiting participants and instantly surfacing insights. Synthetic personas, carefully trained on consumer signals, mirror human behavior closely enough to extend live studies and compress timelines from weeks to hours. Today user research mostly runs in fits and starts, prohibitively expensive and locked away in dedicated project cycles when it could be a constant companion, seamlessly integrated into the product development process.
