Travis J. Williams shared thisVisited Memorial Stadium in Lincoln last week with my son. There’s a quote etched into the main entrance of this 85,000-seat stadium: “Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.” In football and in most meaningful work, you measure all you can. But transformation rarely runs in a linear fashion. The person you invest in today may not be ready for eighteen months. The seed planted this summer may not break ground until next spring. The scoreboard lags the work — sometimes by years. So what do you do in the gap? You wake up, show up, and offer your best - faithfully. You do the next right thing. You hold the standard when no one’s watching. You extend the invitation — again. And, again. The outcomes belong to God. The deed is entrusted to those who faithfully serve. In the deed the glory. And the glory to God.

Travis J. Williams shared thisA guy I went to middle school with showed up on our campus this week. I had not seen him in years. The years tell a story. You can see the hardship in his face. But you can still see the boy inside the man. Homelessness can feel distant until it has a familiar face. A classmate. A neighbor. Someone’s son. Someone God has never stopped seeing. That is part of the weight of this work. We serve people in crisis, but we are never serving categories. We are serving human beings with names, stories, wounds, choices, dignity, and the possibility of a different future. This work is not easy, but it is holy. And it is closer to all of us than we sometimes realize. Every guest has a name. Sometimes, it is a name you already know.

What moves someone from crisis to stability? What restores dignity? What builds ownership? What role should faith, family, work, generosity, churches, businesses, nonprofits, and government each play? These questions are real for us — in every guest, every conversation, every decision on the campus and in the community. That’s why it meant a lot for Springs Rescue Mission to be interviewed during the making of Acton’s upcoming documentary Poverty Trap—releasing next Winter. Grateful to learn alongside leaders from around the world and to add to the global conversation through our local lens. This work requires compassion. Travis J. Williams shared thisI've watched well-meaning people hurt the very people they wanted to help. Hot dog stands in the park. Food handouts along the trail. Hibachi grills outside our campus. Nobody meant harm. But some of those gestures pulled people right back to their drug dealer. They left our addiction recovery program to get a hot dog—and never came back. The giver felt good. The person lost their footing. That is the uncomfortable truth about charity done wrong. It can meet the helper's need before it serves the person's good. At Springs Rescue Mission, we are building something different. We meet people in crisis with compassion, and as few barriers as possible. Then we invite them—not force them—into a pathway toward restoration. Because the goal is not just relief. The goal is dignity, ownership, and a life restored. Grace opens the door. Travis J. Williams shared thisThis week has hit differently. I know we serve thousands of unique people every year and nearly 800 neighbors every day. I see the work up close — in the courtyard, the shelters, recovery, vocational training, and housing. But it feels different when I’m out in the community and people I know pull me aside to tell me (often in a whisper) how SRM helped their daughter or son. A mom looked me in the eye and said, “We never wanted to see our daughter struggling. We tried to raise her to prevent the struggle. But she found herself on the streets. SRM was there for her, and it gave us some peace knowing she had a place to go.” Then a grandfather I’ve known for years called to say SRM helped reconnect him with a family member who had been gone for more than 20 years. This work touches daughters, sons, parents, grandparents, classmates, neighbors, and friends. It’s focused work. It is meaningful. And it is closer to all of us than we sometimes realize. What gives me confidence each day is that I know God cares and I have seen this community care. With confidence, I know there is a place for your service at Springs Rescue Mission. This work belongs to a thoughtful and caring community. Your care helps restore families, rebuild trust, and multiply hope. That’s why we say: It’s Your Mission.

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be a semi-retired, part-time food sourcer (which means I’ll be working with retail stores to donate their unsold food, instead of wasting it). Today will also wrap up the 10th fiscal year that I’ve been part of the fundraising team at Northern Illinois Food Bank. I’ve been blessed to have incredibly committed and talented people on the teams I’ve been privileged to lead. Together, we’ve raised over $230M for hunger relief in the 13 counties we serve. Impressive, but there’s much more to be done. Nobody should go hungry in America. I want to say thanks to Julie Yurko and Maeven Sipes for giving me this opportunity to be part of an incredible organization. Thanks also to Mike Loeffl for convincing me to join his food sourcing team. I’m looking forward to learning a whole new aspect of hunger relief. And in my spare time (if there is any)? More music! 🎶

Over the years, that has come to mean different things for different audiences as CBS has adapted to a variety of contexts to help people engage God's Word at a meaningful level (e.g. oral learners, the incarcerated, special needs--among others). Today marks yet another major milestone in that effort: we have launched an initiative to bring God's Word to the global deaf community. The team pictured here are those who are recording Bible study teachings in ASL to be piloted primarily among a North American audience. While CBS has other expressions designed for the deaf community taking place in other parts of the world, this day marks the start of something very notable in our ministry's 50 year history. It's a beautiful thing.

John was a college professor and founded and stewarded SharedXP an innovative platform where he served as a fractional executive pastor for different congregations. He was also an author and passionate lover of the church. A native of the Chicago area he was much loved by all who knew him. A tall man with an enormous heart, he loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. While happy for John receiving his eternal reward our hearts ache for his adoring bride Connie whom when standing side by side seemed only half his height. We miss you already John and until we meet again, give them heaven. “Be Encouraged”

This new chapter brings together the work I’ve been fortunate to do across public service, Olympic sport, professional sport, national brands, major events, strategic communications, crisis response, and executive leadership. At its core, Sagebrush Consulting helps organizations, leaders, brands, and events get clear on where they’re going, tell their story well, and execute when the stakes are high. That can mean sharpening a message, navigating a complex public issue, building a strategy, strengthening a reputation, elevating an event or initiative, or helping turn a big idea into a plan that can actually move. Over the course of my career, I’ve had plenty of experience leading through high-stakes crises and highly visible moments — the kind where the right strategy, the right message, and the right judgment can make all the difference.
