I recently had the privilege of attending BSides PDX in Portland - and I’m still buzzing from the experience. For anyone in the information security or cybersecurity field (or looking to break into it) this event delivered on so many fronts: excellent speakers, meaningful community connection, and fresh ideas to bring back into my work. From the opening keynote to the last presentation, the quality and diversity of talks were outstanding. The organizers did a fantastic job curating content that ranged from the deeply technical to the broadly strategic. I found myself engaged, challenged, and inspired. One highlight: a talk titled “Redacted”. High-energy, eye-opening and packed with practical insights - the speaker delivered a performance that blended story-telling, real-world examples, and actionable takeaways. While it’s hard to pick a single “favorite” session (there were so many worth mentioning), this one stood out for its clarity and impact. Beyond the sessions themselves, the vibe of BSides was everything you want in a security gathering: open, inclusive, curious, and community-driven. I made connections with fellow attendees, chatted with speakers during breaks, and encountered new perspectives that have awakened my thinking around risk, incident response, proactive threat analysis - all topics I’ve been focusing on lately in my transition toward cybersecurity roles. What stood out most to me: Expert speakers - The lineup included individuals with real-world experience, deep technical chops, and the ability to communicate insights clearly. Actionable content - Sessions I attended didn’t just cover theory; they delivered practical advice I can bring back into my home-lab, incident-response planning, and risk assessment work. Community & networking - From seasoned analysts to newcomers, the event fostered interaction. As someone working toward roles in SOC, risk assessment, and security operations, this was gold. Local but global perspective - While BSidesPDX is rooted in the Pacific Northwest infosec community, the content and connections resonate far beyond regional boundaries. As I reflect on where I’m headed - building a cybersecurity home lab, honing incident-response skills, developing risk/policy capabilities - the event reinforced how much there is to learn and how much value lies in being surrounded by a curious, capable community. If you’re reading this and wondering whether to attend future BSides events (or other local infosec conferences) - I say, go for it. The return on investment (in terms of mindset, connections and knowledge) is significant. #BSidesPDX
