#PICSummit2025: From keynotes to panels, imec the Netherlands showcased how we bridge semiconductor and photonics technologies to accelerate innovation across Europe. Patrick Vandenameele, Co-COO and CEO-elect of imec, shared our vision for sustainable innovation and a stronger cross-border ecosystem, while Jesse Robbers, Regional Managing Director at imec the Netherlands, led the panel “How PICs Accelerate Quantum Tech” with industry and policy leaders. We also presented six live demos in topics such as health, environmental sensing, and automotive, and announced a new collaboration with PHIX Photonics Assembly under the PhotonDelta ecosystem. For imec, shaping the future of photonics is about more than technology, it’s about collaboration that makes innovation sustainable, scalable, and impactful. 🎥 Watch the highlights in our aftermovie.

In a comprehensive preview of the challenges facing photonics in 2026, the Photonics100 2026 honorees paint a picture of an industry at a crossroads. The challenges are formidable and interconnected: 🌐 Geopolitical fragmentation is exposing critical supply chain vulnerabilities. Rimantas Budriūnas (Light Conversion) warns that many key components are manufactured exclusively in China with no alternative suppliers 💰 Funding constraints are creating a "valley of death" for deep-tech innovations. Antony Murphy (Causeway Sensors Limited) highlights the persistent lack of dedicated capital for photonics 👥 Severe talent shortages threaten growth. Dr Calum Williams (University of Exeter) and Hollie Wright (Heriot-Watt University) sound the alarm on the UK's struggle to attract research talent and technicians ⚙️ Scaling bottlenecks prevent the transition from laboratory prototypes to volume production, as Mariam Aamer Benelfaquih (LIGENTEC) explains 🔧 Lack of standardisation creates a fragmented value chain. Dominic A. Sulway (Light Trace Photonics) and Jens Hofrichter, PhD, PMP (Lightium) identify this as a critical barrier to adoption 📢 A branding crisis leaves photonics unrecognised by policymakers, despite underpinning everything from quantum computing to autonomous vehicles, note Murphy and Madison Rilling, PhD (Optonique) 🔬 The lab-to-industry gap means brilliant innovations struggle to reach real-world deployment, as Celia Millon (RayVen Laser) highlights Yet the honorees also identify clear pathways forward: enhanced collaboration, targeted investment, diversified training programmes, and strategic focus. As Joyce Poon (Lightmatter/University of Toronto) notes: "If we can overcome these challenges, the photonics industry, as well as our society at large, would be radically transformed." 2026 isn't just another year – it's a defining period for the sector's future.
