Transport & Logistics might be the single biggest winner in the AI revolution. That's the key takeaway from an article Daniel Kornum, former COO of Citadel Securities, wrote yesterday, arguing that the biggest AI winners won't be tech companies, but the businesses running on razor-thin margins. I think he's right. And T&L might be the cleanest example of his entire argument. Everyone who's ever worked inside the core of a logistics company knows it's commoditized in many instances. You move stuff from A to B - it's not rocket science. But there's a ton of human-driven coordination going on underneath that. Layers of people whose entire job is coordinating other people. There's a reason why DSV - Global Transport and Logistics has 150.000 employees pro-forma post-DB Schenker. Operators, dispatchers, exception handlers, customs brokers. Someone chasing a claim from three weeks ago. Back-office reconciliation that never quite closes on time. That layer exists because freight is messy and human judgement doesn't scale cleanly. And you can't price your way out of it. The market sets the rate, not you. Kornum's math is that at a 3% margin, a 1% cost cut isn't a rounding error. It's a +25% swing in profit. Most T&L operators have never had a lever like that in front of them before. We're already seeing the ambition take shape. DSV wants to drive DKK 9bn of synergies by 2030 (similar in size to the Schenker transaction synergies, btw.). C.H. Robinson has already lifted adjusted operating margin by 680 basis points to 31.3%, while increasing shipments handled per employee by more than 40% since 2022. Below, a perspective on where I think the real AI opportunity sits inside T&L. Not the flashy customer-facing use cases, but the coordination cost that's always been hard to estimate.

Great perspective. I agree that coordination is where much of the untapped value in logistics lies. I’d add one more thought: AI will fundamentally change how people interact with logistics software. Today, dispatchers spend a surprising amount of time switching between TMS, customer portals, carrier portals, emails, and spreadsheets. Over the next few years, AI agents will increasingly become the primary interface, orchestrating these systems in the background instead of adding yet another tool. The real competitive advantage, however, will come when these agents don’t just retrieve information, but act on it. By operating across systems and organizational boundaries, they can automate the coordination work that today requires countless handovers between teams, departments, and even companies. That’s where I believe the biggest productivity gains still lie.

Excellent point. I believe coordination is only the first visible layer. The bigger shift is that organizations must redesign how intelligence flows through their operations. Leaders will need to decide which workflows require human judgment, which can be AI-driven, and where hybrid intelligence creates the best outcomes. In that sense, AI is less about automation and more about building an Enterprise Intelligence Operating Model.

An insightful perspective. AI's greatest impact in transport and logistics may not come from replacing core operations, but from reducing the coordination effort behind them. When margins are tight, even small improvements in planning, exception handling and back-office efficiency can have a significant effect on profitability. Which operational area do you think will see the fastest return from AI adoption?

I have responded to similar posts before on here on respect of the impact of AI on the Logistics and associated freight sectors. YES, of course it is and will benefit enormously from AI...on the front end and support departments. Mainly because other than the integrators the industry has been way behind other sectors. BUT...the actual physical nuts & bolts of moving shipments will continue to be the proverbial swan swimming calmly on the surface whilst paddling manically below the surface. Just so many inter dependencies, unknowns and curved balls...things that AI really cannot impact on.

What is not mentioned but must be factored in is how competitive shipping is particularly freight forwarding, where the largest global forwarders control only 4-5% of the market versus the top ocean carrier at 21%. This means enhancements to profitability via AI are not necessarily retained but passed along to customers.

I think "coordination cost" is the right lens. Most logistics organizations don't lose margin because people aren't working hard. They lose it because decisions, exceptions, and handoffs don't scale efficiently. AI has the potential to compress those coordination layers, but only if the operating model evolves alongside the technology.

I agree that AI creates its greatest value by reducing coordination costs rather than simply automating tasks. I would add that coordination itself is not the starting point. The real advantage comes from using AI to improve operational visibility, diagnose emerging bottlenecks earlier, prioritize interventions, and coordinate actions before critical operational windows close. AI becomes valuable when it transforms information into timely operational capability, not just automation.

This matches what we've seen too. Dispatch, exceptions, invoicing rarely show up as their own cost line. Once you can name that layer, it's often the fastest margin to reclaim.

Sure...but you don't need AI necessarily to do such basic resource and efficiency management, it should be ongoing in any logistics company, plenty of tools to do that...it will help marginally though for sure.
