Slash succeeded because they solved a very specific, high-friction banking problem. "Sneakerheads" (the resellers) were essentially running high-volume, high-risk micro-businesses. Traditional banks often freeze accounts because their transaction patterns appear fraudulent or indicative of money laundering. The innovation here was Slash building a "virtual card" infrastructure capable of handling thousands of rapid-fire transactions without being flagged. The pivot was that they realised they could bank high-frequency sneaker resellers and, by extension, any high-growth, high-volume digital business (dropshippers, influencers, etc.). In the VC world, a company that sells products (like sneakers) is often given a low valuation. But a company that provides the financial plumbing (APIs, banking-as-a-service, virtual cards) gets an infrastructure multiple. Investors aren't betting on the 19-year-olds. They are betting that Slash will become the "Stripe for the next generation of digital entrepreneurs."
