Infineon’s €5 Billion Dresden Fab Nears Production Launch On June 15, semiconductor industry media #SemiMedia reported that Infineon Technologies will officially begin production at its new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Dresden on July 2. This €5 billion investment marks the company’s largest single project to date and has received approximately €1 billion in funding support under the EU Chips Act. The fab’s output will be ramped gradually in line with market demand, with potential annual revenue reaching up to €5 billion at full capacity. I recently read an interesting analysis on what a potential "EU Chips Act 2.0" might need to address to strengthen Europe's position in semiconductors. Much of the discussion focuses on fabrication capacity, but semiconductor leadership depends on far more than manufacturing alone. Equipment, materials, design tools, packaging technologies and engineering talent all play a critical role in the strength of the value chain. Infineon Technologies has opened its €5bn (US$5.69bn) Smart Power Fab in Dresden, doubling manufacturing capacity and creating what the company says is the world's largest facility dedicated to intelligent power semiconductors and analogue and mixed-signal technologies. The new fab will produce chips that improve power delivery for AI data centres, while also supporting renewable energy, industrial applications and software-defined vehicles. The investment creates 1,000 jobs and strengthens Europe's semiconductor supply chain as demand for AI infrastructure continues to accelerate.
