📨 It’s that time of year when many students and postdocs are applying for jobs, including roles in industry. A few practical thoughts from someone on the other side of the hiring process: 1) Be persistent. A rejection is not a verdict on your ability. Sometimes a team is looking for a very specific mix of skills. Sometimes the role is still posted even though the process is already far along. Keep applying, keep improving, and do not let one outcome define your confidence. 2) If one role at a company does not work out, apply again. You may not have been the right fit for that specific opening, but another role in the same company or even same team may be a much better match. 3) Bring energy to interviews. People notice genuine enthusiasm. It does not replace substance, but it does matter. 4) Do your homework. Research the company, the team, and the role. Strong candidates make it clear why the fit makes sense in both directions. 5) If you are moving from academia to industry, be clear about why. They are different environments with different incentives, rhythms, and expectations. Know what shift you are making and why you want it. 6) Know your strengths. Be able to explain clearly what you do especially well and where you bring distinct value. 7) Know your growth areas too. Self-awareness is a strength. Nobody is perfect, and thoughtful honesty goes a long way. 8) Networking matters more than many people think. A strong referral or warm introduction will not replace merit, but it can help make sure your application gets seen. 9) Apply early when possible. Many teams review applications on a rolling basis and start forming a shortlist quickly. It is not a guarantee, but applying early can increase the chances that your application gets real attention before the process is far along. There is more to say, but I’ll stop here and save the rest for another post. Good luck to everyone applying.

***Insights from Over a Decade in Talent [Part 1 of 2]*** ➡ After more than a decade in the talent space and 7+ years leading recruiting and people globally, I'm sharing some tips and insights that may help others in the job search process: 🔷 Do Thorough Research. Study the company's website, LinkedIn, news articles, and employee profiles. Know how to pronounce the company name and be clear on the role you're considering. 🔶 Update Your LinkedIn Profile. Ensure it reflects your latest achievements and skills. Many recruiters will check it before or after your interview. 🔷 Find Connections. Look for people in your network who might have insights about the company or role. They could provide valuable information or even a referral, which can help get your application seen more quickly and possibly secure an automatic first-round interview. 🔶Conduct Informational Interviews. Before applying, learn more about the company and role through informal chats with current or former employees. Be mindful to not message a lot of people—be selective and tailor your messages. 🔷 Mind Your Social Media. Some employers will look at your online presence even beyond LinkedIn, so consider what you want them to see (or not see). 🔶Know Your "Why". Be clear on why you want the role and how it aligns with your career goals. It should be compelling and specific to you—not generic or untrue. 🔷Attention to Detail. Ensure your application is error-free. There should not be typos. 🔶Personalize Your Cover Letter. Address it to the hiring manager or a specific person whenever possible instead of "To Whom It May Concern." This shows effort and attention to detail. 🔷Prepare Thoughtful Questions for the Interview. Develop a few questions about the role, team, and company to demonstrate genuine interest and critical thinking. Hold most of your questions until the end when the interviewer asks if you have any, but avoid overwhelming them with too many. 🔶Highlight Relevant Achievements. During the interview, don't just recite your resume. Focus on key accomplishments and how they relate to the role. Use examples to show rather than tell. 🔷Practice Self-Kindness and Be Your Own Advocate. The job search process is challenging, especially today. Treat yourself with compassion, and remember to celebrate small victories along the way. Be your own coach and advocate, reminding yourself of your strengths and capabilities. ➡ Stay tuned for Part 2, where I'll share more tips on navigating the interview process and handling job offers effectively. 🎤 What's Your Take? 🔸 Which of these tips do you find most valuable, and why? 🔹 What resources do you rely on when preparing for a job search? 🔸What's the best piece of advice you've received during your job search? 🔹How do you suggest staying motivated during a lengthy job search?

Here's my response: 1. Target and obsess over 5-6 companies that align with your interests and post jobs that fit you well. Try to learn skills that frequently appear in their job postings. Connect with people who have the job you want on LinkedIn. 2. Translate your academic skills and experience into industry-friendly language to demonstrate your value. This helps potential employers understand how your background applies to their needs. 3. Apply for positions even if you meet only 60–70% of the qualifications, as perfect matches are rare. Many candidates self-select out of opportunities, so don't let imposter syndrome hold you back. 4. For immigrants: Know visa alternatives and how a company can hire you. Many smaller companies avoid sponsorship due to unfamiliarity with the process. Suggest solutions with conviction and confidence. 5. Demonstrate long-term commitment in the interview. Employers value loyalty from sponsored employees, especially if they're investing in visa sponsorship. 6. Prepare and remember a 30-second elevator pitch highlighting why someone should hire you. This can sometimes help you outside of an interview, in an informal setting as well. You feel confident from the inside, too :) 7. Consider entry-level roles or contract positions (if you aren't on a visa) to set your foot in the industry. 8. Focus your job search on geographic biotech hubs like San Diego, Boston, or San Francisco. More jobs there! 9. Follow up with the recruiter twice with a gap of 7 days after applying or interviewing. If you don't hear back, save your self-respect and move on. Recruiters are simply doing their job. Don't keep any hard feelings. :) #jobadvice

Planning to Study or Graduate in the UK?🇬🇧 Don’t Miss Out on Graduate Schemes! 🚀 As someone who has studied and worked in the UK, I've seen firsthand how many students miss out on amazing job opportunities simply because they aren’t aware of graduate schemes.Let me break it down for you: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀? Graduate schemes are structured training programs offered by top companies to fresh graduates, designed to develop you into a future leader or specialist in your field. Think of them as a launchpad into some of the biggest names in the industry, often with the added bonus of visa sponsorship. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? These schemes are not just jobs—they’re career accelerators. They offer: - Extensive Training: Companies invest in your development from day one. - Rotational Experience: You get to experience different departments, helping you understand the business from multiple angles. - Mentorship: You'll have access to senior professionals guiding you along the way. But here’s the catch—they’re extremely competitive and application deadlines come fast. Most applications open one year in advance, meaning if you’re graduating next summer, you need to apply this September! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝘁 Here’s the harsh reality: If you’re not aware of graduate schemes or delay your application, you risk missing out on some of the best job opportunities in the UK. These schemes are often filled on a rolling basis—so the later you apply, the slimmer your chances. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁 So, how do you ensure you’re not left behind? Here’s what you should do: 1. Prepare Your Application: Tailor your CV and cover letters to each scheme, highlighting relevant skills and experiences. 3. Practice Aptitude Tests: Most schemes require online assessments—practicing them can give you an edge. 4. Ace the Video Interviews: Get comfortable with the format and practice answering questions that showcase your competencies. 5. Network: Leverage university career services, attend job fairs, and connect with alumni to gain insights and recommendations. By taking these steps, you can position yourself to not only compete but excel in the graduate scheme application process. Students and graduates, this is for you. Today, on campus, it was heartbreaking to speak with so many final-year students still without anything secured for next year. They weren't expecting job offers yet, but were overwhelmed by the lack of responses to the many applications they'd sent out. Here’s my advice: Companies often say they're recruiting between March and July, but rarely fill all their grad spots right away. Even if they don’t advertise that they’re still looking, they often are. I’ve had years where I was still searching for grads just days before the programme started. The talent struggle is real! So, don’t be discouraged if a closing date has passed. Find the grad recruiter’s name and inbox them if you have to. Use LinkedIn to find hiring managers in the divisions you want to work in, and reach out! There have been many times I’ve accepted last-minute applications to fill roles I couldn’t fill earlier. Be hungry. Be successful. Good luck! #graduaterecruitment #toptalent #investmentbanking #proactive #reachout #makeithappen South African Graduate Employers Association (SAGEA) StudyTrust
