In 1971, a group of wheelchair users at UC Berkeley who called themselves the Rolling Quads; went out in the middle of the night with cement and buckets and built their own ramps into the sidewalks. The city had ignored them. The police threatened to arrest them. They built anyway. Those ramps became curb cuts. Curb cuts became universal. And something unexpected happened: everybody started using them. Parents with strollers. Delivery workers. Cyclists. Elderly people with walkers. Travellers dragging luggage through airports. Design for the person with the most constraints, and you build better for everyone. The phenomenon even got a name: the Curb Cut Effect. It turns out this is a pattern, not an accident. Closed captions were designed for the deaf. Today, millions watch videos on mute in offices and on trains. Speech-to-text was built for people who couldn't type. Today, we dictate messages while driving. The food processor template used by every major kitchen brand today was redesigned by a disabled designer to be more accessible to people with impaired movement and vision. We've all used it. Almost none of us know that. When I visited Japan, I saw the Curb Cut Effect at policy scale. Elevators, tactile paving, audio guides, colour-coded signage, platform-level boarding on every metro and bus. Quiet spaces at airports not just for people with autism, but for anyone overwhelmed by travel. Infrastructure, not charity. And it serves millions of people who have never thought of themselves as disabled. The question we keep asking is: "How do we accommodate people with disabilities without inconveniencing everyone else?" That question contains a false premise. There is no "everyone else." When you build for the person who needs it most, you build better for all of us.

Best Practice Solutions: The research presents a comprehensive matrix covering: Arrival (accessible routes, clear boundaries), Orientation (3D maps, Braille signage), Play/Move/Learn (multi-sensory equipment, natural elements, varied textures), and Family (diverse seating, meeting spaces). Six strategic approaches include 3D maps, inclusive play concepts, multi-sensory equipment, natural play, shared experiences, and thoughtful retrofitting. 2026–2027: Neuro-Inclusive Sensory Design Becomes the New Global Standard for Museums & Heritage Sites Imagine stepping into a museum or heritage site where the space understands your brain. Lighting gently dims as crowds build. Sound levels soften in high-stimulation zones. A clear sensory map on your phone shows quiet recovery areas before you even enter. Haptic wayfinding panels guide without overwhelming. You feel calm, in control, & genuinely welcome, not just accommodated. An estimated 15–20% of the global population identifies as neurodivergent (including autistic, ADHD, sensory-processing, and trauma-impacted individuals). Designing only for the neurotypical majority is no longer innovative. It is exclusion by default. The evidence is here, now (2025–2026 real research & pilots): • A major 2025 Buro Happold / UCL London study on designing for neurodiversity in museums shows how strategies such as prospect–refuge & embodied design can reduce sensory overload & increase satisfaction and dwell time for neurodivergent visitors. • Museums Victoria co-design work: Full participatory design with autistic visitors across every stage produced sensory maps in 7 languages, acoustic zoning, predictable transitions, and a measurable uplift in accessibility & enjoyment for all visitors. • Horizon Europe SHIFT Project pilots (2025): AI-powered multisensory experiences in Berlin State Museums & the Balkan Museum Network (Serbia) demonstrate infrastructure-level adaptive environments rather than separate accessibility apps. • Sensational Museum Project (UK, toolkit launched 2025): £1M AHRC-funded initiative with 10 pilot museums co-creating multisensory interpretation tools alongside neurodivergent and disabled communities. • Smithsonian Institution leadership: Sensory maps, social narratives, & “Morning at the Museum” low-stimulation programmes have become global best practice, explicitly referenced in their Guidelines for Accessible Exhibition Design. These initiatives align directly with UNCRPD Article 9, EN 17210, ISO 21542, and ISO 21902, moving neuro-inclusion from programming to an enforceable built-environment strategy. Leaders who want to lead must act: • Embed neuro-inclusive criteria into every exhibition brief from day one (Smithsonian multi-sensory guidelines). • Integrate sensor-responsive, bio-adaptive lighting & acoustic systems into core infrastructure planning. • Deliver mandatory trauma-informed & neurodiversity-affirming staff training. • Establish paid, ongoing neurodivergent co-design panels, not one-off consultations. • Publish detailed sensory maps & pre-visit resources for every major exhibition or site. Welcome back to Disability Tip Tuesday. Living life on wheels means I’ve come across a lot of spaces that almost got accessibility right—but missed the mark in ways that matter. I’m continuing this series to share what those misses look like in real life, and how a small shift in design or mindset can make a big difference. Video content: Disability Tip Tuesday—ADA compliance doesn’t always equal true accessibility. Frustration: I can’t reach what I need. Designing for people without consulting them often misses the mark. The situation: A hotel room features an “ADA accessible” shower. The bench is fixed on one end of the shower, while the shower head and controls are on the opposite end—completely out of reach for someone seated. The setup leaves the user unable to shower independently or safely. Before: The hotel installs required elements—bench, grab bars, handheld shower head—but fails to consider the practical layout. A guest must attempt to stand or call for assistance, undermining dignity and independence. After (what success looks like): The hotel places the bench and controls together at the same end, within comfortable reach for seated users. Guests can use the shower independently and safely without awkward stretching or assistance. Three tips for success: 1. Design for real usability, not just code compliance. Ask: Can someone use this independently and with dignity? 2. Think beyond minimum requirements. Go the extra step—just because something meets ADA standards doesn’t mean it meets actual user needs. 3. Test your designs with real users. I thought I had “seen it all” but on this visit, I stumbled onto something I’ve never experienced in any airport, a Calm Room designed specifically for neurodivergent travellers. Soft, padded walls. Gentle curves. Adjustable lighting. Zones called “The Forest”, “The Den” and “The Nest”. Each space carefully designed to help people decompress, regulate their senses and feel safe before facing the crowds again. In a world that celebrates loud experiences and Instagrammable moments, this is the opposite: a quiet commitment to inclusion. It reminded me that: • Accessibility is not only ramps and lifts. • Inclusion is often invisible, until you need it. • Thoughtful design can reduce anxiety long before any human interaction happens. Kudos to the team behind this initiative. These are the kinds of “small details” that tell you what a country and an organisation really value. If our workplaces, schools and public spaces adopted the same mindset, how many more people could show up as their best selves? Next time you fly through Changi Airport Group, don’t just look for the tallest slide or the biggest waterfall. Look for the quiet corners too.

What if your workplace helped you get time back? "I've gained hours back in my week because of the thoughtful spaces in the office. Low-stimulation zones help me concentrate." That’s what a Cisconian told me this week during our London office opening—all thanks to neuroinclusive design. It was a powerful reminder that when we design for neuroinclusion, everyone has the chance to thrive. We've been building neuroinclusive design features into our offices for years, learning as we go. London is our biggest step forward yet. It's a blueprint for what's possible when HR, Workplace Resources, our Connected Disability & Neuroinclusivity (CDAN) Community, accessibility experts, and workplace designers build together. Here's what that looks like: • A tech-free Reflection Room near the lobby where you can reset before your day starts • Visual wayfinding with color, icons, and braille, so navigation is easy for everyone • Quiet zones with adjustable lighting for focus work, and open spaces for collaboration • Natural wood materials, live plants, and calming textures in every area • Sit-stand desks and flexible furniture for different work styles During my visit, I toured the space with Natasha Douthwaite (White), and met with Inclusive Community leaders David O'Neill and Well-being Ambassadors Leonora K. Rosalind, Phil Glenister (Phil G.), and Ashok Mishra. My favorite part of the trip was watching people light up when they found spaces that truly supported them. When designing gardens or landscapes, always consider people in all shapes and forms. Raised gardens, for example, are really helpful for individuals with back troubles. Some tips you could use if creating a (semi-)public outdoor space: ✅ Use wide, stable pathways At least 1.2 meters wide, with non-slip surfaces like compacted gravel, resin-bound paths, or decking with grip strips. ✅ Provide seating and rest areas Place benches or natural seating (like logs or rocks) every 20–30 meters. I got weirdly choked up at the Scottish National Museum this week. 😭 They have these lightweight folding chairs mounted on pegs throughout every gallery. The sign doesn't say "for people with disabilities." It says: "Tired feet? Why not borrow a seat?" This is the curb cut effect in action, and it's one of my favorite design principles to use and reference at work. If you're not familiar, here's how it works: 1. Design for the margins first. Solve for the person with the most constraints. In this case: someone who can't stand through a full museum visit. 2. Remove the stigma from using it. "Tired feet?" doesn't require disclosure or justification. It's just practical. 3. Watch everyone benefit. Older visitors. Parents. People recovering from injuries. Someone who just wants to sit and look at a painting for ten minutes. The solution designed for one group ends up serving dozens. The curb cut was originally designed for wheelchair users. Now? Parents with strollers, delivery workers with hand trucks, travelers with luggage, and yeah, wheelchair users too. When you design the most accessible version first, you usually end up with the best version for everyone! At pedestrian crossings in Singapore, elder-friendly traffic lights are designed to adapt to the pace of people nearby. Using sensors or smart detection systems, these crossings can extend the green signal time when slower-moving pedestrians — especially elderly individuals — are detected. This small adjustment makes a significant difference in daily safety. Instead of rushing across wide roads under time pressure, people can walk at a comfortable pace without fear of the signal changing too quickly. It reduces stress, lowers accident risk, and makes public spaces more inclusive for those with limited mobility. It’s a thoughtful example of responsive urban design.
