It’s not about ticking off checkboxes. And it’s not about plugging in accessibility overlays or AI engines either. It’s about *designing* with a wide range of people in mind — from the very start, independent of their skills and preferences. In my experience, the most impactful way to embed accessibility in your work is to bring a handful of people with different needs early into design process and usability testing. It’s making these test sessions accessible to the entire team, and showing real impact of design and code on real people using a real product. Teams usually don’t get time to work on features which don’t have a clear business case. But no manager really wants to be seen publicly ignoring their prospect customers. Visualize accessibility to everyone on the team and try to make an argument about potential reach and potential income. Don’t ask for big commitments: embed accessibility in your work by default. Account for accessibility needs in your estimates. Create accessibility tickets and flag accessibility issues. Don’t mistake smiling and nodding for support — establish timelines, roles, specifics, objectives. And most importantly: measure the impact of your work by repeatedly conducting accessibility testing with real people. Build a strong before/after case to show the change that the team has enabled and contributed to, and celebrate small and big accessibility wins. It might not sound like much, but it can start changing the culture faster than you think. We design for the average. The average doesn’t exist. April is Autism Acceptance Month. Designing for autism is about building products that work for everyone. Cognitive overload affects everyone. Your brain has limits, and more noise can affect how you perceive things. For some autistic users, this is constant and amplified. Many rely on digital products to navigate daily life. Yet most interfaces ignore them. So what happens? We design experiences that overwhelm the people who need them most. And if your product overwhelms autistic users, it’s exhausting everyone else. Here are 5 principles to get you started: 1. Consistent Structure Keep navigation, layout, and UI patterns identical across your entire product. Why: Sudden changes cause anxiety and disorientation. Example: Shopping cart stays in the top-right corner across every page. 2. Literal Communication Use plain, direct language. Skip idioms and metaphors. Why: Vague language requires guessing and creates confusion Example: "Your payment was declined. Check your card number and try again." 3. Sensory Calm Use muted, natural colours. Avoid pure black/white and bright contrasts. Why: Extreme contrast and bright colours cause sensory overload Example: Dashboard with soft beige background, dark grey text, and 3-4 clearly separated sections 4. User Control Default to sound off. Allow people to pause, stop, or disable animations. Why: Sensory needs vary greatly, and customization prevents overload. Example: Toggles for reduced motion, dark mode, font size, and autoplay off by default. 5. Predictable Interactions Provide clear feedback and progress indicators so users always know where they are. Why: Unexpected interruptions trigger anxiety and break focus. Example: Multi-step form shows "Step 2 of 4" with a progress bar, confirms "Your information was saved" after each step. Happy Global Accessibility Awareness Day everyone! It's a great day to remind people, that, accessibility is the responsibility of the whole team, including designers! A couple of things designers can do: - Use sufficient color contrast (text + UI elements) and don’t rely on color alone to convey meaning. - Ensure readable typography: support text resizing, avoid hard-to-read styles, maintain hierarchy. - Make links and buttons clear and distinguishable (label, size, states). - Design accessible forms: clear labels, error help, no duplicate input, document states. - Support keyboard navigation: tab order, skip links, focus indicators, keyboard interaction. - Structure content with headings and landmarks: use proper H1–Hn, semantic order, regions. - Provide text alternatives for images, icons, audio, and video. - Avoid motion triggers: respect reduced motion settings, allow pause on auto-play. - Design with flexibility: support orientation change, allow text selection, avoid fixed-height elements. - Document accessibly and communicate: annotate designs, collaborate with devs, QA, and content teams. Inclusive design is more than the font you choose. It is about how your content behaves when it meets a different nervous system. We are auditing your media and structure. In our rush for engagement, corporate communications often rely on visual shortcuts like flashing videos, color coded alerts, and walls of emojis. Marketing calls these tactics. I call them barriers. When accessibility clashes with creativity, we often default to what looks flashy rather than what is functional. But true creativity flourishes within the constraints of inclusive design. Compliance is just the floor. Our goal is to cultivate an ecosystem where everyone thrives. Here are 8 ways to operationalize inclusion in your content structure. 1/ The Emoji Balance → The Tension: A wall of emojis creates chaos for screen reader users. → Reality: Minimal emojis act as vital visual anchors that break up dense text for ADHD and dyslexic minds (like mine). → The Fix: Use sparingly. Place them at the end of sentences, never in the middle. 2/ The Caption Choice → The Tension: Audio posted bare completely excludes Deaf and Auditory Processing communities. → Reality: But forced, burned in open captions can distract or overwhelm some neurodivergent minds. → The Fix: Provide high quality closed captions (CC). AI generated captions are helpful, but a human must review for accuracy. This empowers user agency, allowing individuals to toggle them based on their needs. 3/ The Color & Shape Rule → The Tension: Using only color to signal danger locks out colorblind users. → The Fix: Always pair color with a distinct shape or text label to ensure the warning translates across all visual systems. 4/ The Alt Text Discipline → The Tension: Images with file names like "IMG_5920.jpg" are dead ends for screen readers. → The Fix: Write descriptive, concise alternative text that translates the visual data clearly. 5/ The Header Hierarchy → The Tension: Manually bolding text to look like a header creates a flat, confusing landscape for screen readers. → The Fix: Use actual heading styles (H1, H2) to create a structured, accessibility. 6/ The Motion Control → The Tension: Auto playing GIFs or flashing content trigger vestibular overload, siezures and visual migraines. → The Fix: Use static images or user controlled play buttons. Protect your team's nervous systems. 7/ The Permanent Label → The Tension: Form field labels that disappear once you start typing strain working memory and executive function. → The Fix: Keep labels permanently visible above the text box to reduce cognitive load. 8/ The Invisible Reality → The Tension: We often design solely for static, highly visible needs. → The Fix: Recognize that many disabilities are invisible or temporary. Low friction content is high impact content and supports everyone. Stop making your audience fight your design to get to your message. Check your latest post or project. Design can only be termed good if it reaches all. Creating beautiful and innovative designs is a key goal for graphic designers. However, even the most visually appealing designs can be inaccessible to some users if they don’t consider various accessibility needs. Low contrast between text and gaudy backgrounds can make it difficult for people with visual impairments or colour blindness to read the content. Decorative fonts can be hard to read for everyone, especially for people with dyslexia or other reading disabilities. So, what do we do to make designs more disability inclusive? 🔍 Understand Diverse Needs: Begin with empathy. Get to know the unique needs and challenges faced by people with disabilities. This understanding will guide your design process to be more inclusive. 🖼️ Accessible Visuals: Use high-contrast colors and clear fonts to make text and images easily readable. 🗣️ Alt Text Matters: Provide descriptive alt text for all images to ensure that screen readers can convey the content to visually impaired users, making your designs more inclusive. 🎨 Responsive Design: Design with flexibility by creating layouts that adapt seamlessly across different devices and screen sizes, including those used by people with disabilities. ♿ Universal Symbols: Use universally recognized symbols and icons to communicate important information. 💬 Inclusive Language: Choose words that respect and acknowledge people with disabilities. Avoid ableist language and ensure your message is positive and empowering. 👩💻 User Testing with Disabled Communities: Involve people with disabilities in your testing process. Your design might look clear and organized, but if that structure isn't in the code, assistive tech users miss out. Headings, lists, form groups, required fields, tables - they all need proper HTML to be meaningful. This carousel breaks down how to meet 1.3.1 and why it's important. What is WCAG 1.3.1? Your design communicates meaning and relationships. But if it’s not in the code, assistive technology users can’t access that information. Why it matters. If you rely only on how things look, you leave out people who use screen readers, rely on braille displays, or can’t see layout or hear audio cues Common mistakes. These may look fine, but aren’t coded accessibly: Bold text as a heading Asterisks or red text for required fields Dashes for lists Tables made with spaces or tabs instead of HTML Do it right with semantic HTML. Use the correct HTML tags and attributes to convey meaning to assistive technologies. Reinforce style with structure. If color, sound, or placement communicates something, back it up with code. Code grouped form fields. Wrap form fields that go together in a fieldset and use a legend to describe the purpose of the set of fields. Code headings correctly. Use semantic heading tags in a logical order. Use h1 for the page title, h2 for section headings, h3 for subsection headings, and so on. Mark up lists correctly. Use ul or ol elements to code lists. Don't fake it with dashes or emojis. Mark up (and use) tables correctly. Use tables for tabular data, not for layout. Use a caption to describe what the table is about. Use th elements for table headers and define their scope. Use td elements for table cells. Label it or lose the meaning. Programmatically associate labels with form fields by using a for attribute on the label that refers to the ID of the input. Required field? Code it that way. Use the aria-required="true" attribute to mark required fields. No landmarks? No map. Provide page landmarks such as header, main, footer, aside, and nav to help users find their way. Monday Accessibility Tip for e-Learning and online course design. 💡 Make sure learners can move through content in a logical, consistent order using just the keyboard. This includes modules, lessons, videos, and quizzes. Why It Matters: Keyboard users, including those using screen readers, depend on a predictable flow of information. Disorganized tabbing or unexpected jumps can make learning frustrating or even impossible. What You Can Do: 🔍 Use proper heading levels (H1 for titles, H2 for section headers, etc.) Ensure the tab order follows the visual reading order. Test embedded tools for consistent keyboard navigation. Bonus: ⭐ Include learners with disabilities in your testing phase. Before launching a new course, invite a screen reader or keyboard-only user to test the experience. Their feedback can highlight real-world barriers you might have missed, and improve usability for everyone!

Welcome back to Disability Tip Tuesday. Living life on wheels means I’ve come across a lot of spaces that almost got accessibility right—but missed the mark in ways that matter. I’m continuing this series to share what those misses look like in real life, and how a small shift in design or mindset can make a big difference. Video content: Disability Tip Tuesday—ADA compliance doesn’t always equal true accessibility. Frustration: I can’t reach what I need. Designing for people without consulting them often misses the mark. The situation: A hotel room features an “ADA accessible” shower. The bench is fixed on one end of the shower, while the shower head and controls are on the opposite end—completely out of reach for someone seated. The setup leaves the user unable to shower independently or safely. Before: The hotel installs required elements—bench, grab bars, handheld shower head—but fails to consider the practical layout. A guest must attempt to stand or call for assistance, undermining dignity and independence. After (what success looks like): The hotel places the bench and controls together at the same end, within comfortable reach for seated users. Guests can use the shower independently and safely without awkward stretching or assistance. Three tips for success: 1. Design for real usability, not just code compliance. Ask: Can someone use this independently and with dignity? 2. Think beyond minimum requirements. Go the extra step—just because something meets ADA standards doesn’t mean it meets actual user needs. 3. Test your designs with real users. I’ve been getting more requests for “accessible” brand and website design, where visuals, colors, and layouts are optimized for people of all abilities. Unfortunately, accessibility is often treated as a checkbox rather than a genuine commitment. Some organizations rush into changes for appearances, without fully understanding how to create an experience that truly benefits all users. Instead of treating accessibility as a checkbox, I recommend… → Understanding your community’s diverse readability and usability needs → Having an honest conversation with your team around what it’ll take to be – and maintain – WCAG compliance (remember there are 3 levels: A, AA, or AAA) → Involving users with disabilities to review your brand and test your site for insights automated tools might miss → Running accessibility audits monthly using tools like Wave or Axe, and have a plan for how to address their recommendations The truth is, building an accessible brand or website impacts more than just design. It requires additional effort from your team—training in accessible design, testing and reworking copy for readability, adding alt text to images, user testing, frequent accessibility audits, and much more to consider.
