The conversation around AI in education often focuses on risk: cheating, shortcuts, and the fear that students will stop thinking for themselves. But the latest OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 offers a more nuanced perspective. Yes, generative AI can create problems when used as a shortcut. Research shows that while tools like GPT can improve students’ task performance, they don’t always improve learning. In some cases, students who relied heavily on AI performed worse once the tool was removed, highlighting the danger of “cognitive offloading.” But the report also highlights something equally important, when designed and used well, AI can significantly enhance learning. Examples include: • AI tutors that use Socratic questioning to guide thinking rather than provide answers • Tools that improve the quality and speed of feedback for students • Systems that personalise learning pathways at scale • AI assistants that reduce teacher workload so they can focus on human interaction For me the real lesson is this, AI should not replace thinking...it should scaffold it. The most promising models are not about automation, but augmentation. Teachers and AI working together, combining human judgement with machine efficiency. For education leaders, the challenge isn’t whether AI will be used, students are already using it widely. The challenge is how we design learning around it. That means: • Teaching students how to think with AI, not just how to use it • Designing assessments that emphasise reasoning and understanding • Developing purpose-built educational AI tools grounded in learning science AI in education isn’t a technology story. It’s a pedagogy story. And those who get that distinction right will shape the future of learning.

➡️ Important step forward yesterday as schools and colleges in England were provided with materials and guidance for using AI tools safely and effectively. 📍 And great to get the opportunity to talk to the BBC central news service about why it's important for teachers to have guidance & training, the opportunity and the time to put these new technologies to the test, safely. ✒️ This is not about using AI for marking or writing student reports - go beyond the headline and explore the materials, this is about supporting teachers with guidance and training materials so that they can really start to navigate these tools safely. 🔭 This is not about replacing teachers with AI - but it is about teachers having the framework to explore how to leverage modern digital tools in a safe and effective way. ⛔ AI can never be a substitute for teachers' professional judgement or the personal relationships teachers have with their pupils. ⚠️ Teachers must remain in control - but it's vital that teachers also embrace the digital technology that is permeating every aspect of society, so that every young person becomes digitally literate, able to participate fully in life and work now and into the future. ➡️ Fear of the future, of the unknown is real - not only for teachers but for young people too. Being curious about what AI is, what risks it introduces, what data it's using, how bias is introduced....there are so many important conversations to be had - and we must create space for young people to have those conversations. 🟢 The promise? That AI tools could [can be designed to] support teachers to handle repetitive tasks that currently take up time which means that more time might be freed up for teachers to spend more time with young people doing what they uniquely do best – inspiring and empowering young people. 🟩 The thinking is that by using the tech in this way teachers could free up time to focus on more personalised and targeted communication and engagement. 🟧 This afternoon I attended a parliamentary round table event about young people and AI. So good to have strong youth voice in the room. Among many excellent insights we considered whether any "freed up time" could be used to develop & enhance uniquely human skills of critical ethical thinking, resilience, communication and collaboration in a deliberately offline world. But as an educator, I have to ask: 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒈𝒐𝒂𝒍? In my experience, the true potential of AI in education lies not in saving time, but in enhancing learning outcomes. Let me share an example: Over the past three semesters, I have implemented AI-powered formative feedback tools in my courses. These tools use my assignment rubrics to provide feedback to student before they submit their final work for grading. The goal? Not to cut my grading time, but to empower students to: · Identify strengths and areas for improvement · Attempt to close knowledge gaps independently · Enhance the quality of their work before submission Since using these AI tools for formative feedback, I've noticed that my students plan ahead to allow time for revision and approach me with targeted questions about their work. AI doesn’t teach. But with the right design, it can help students learn faster, reflect deeper, and build confidence in new domains. A recent Nature article found that ChatGPT can support learning when used thoughtfully. While nuanced, the research showed gains in learning performance and, in some cases, higher-order thinking, particularly when ChatGPT was used over several weeks and embedded in problem-based or scaffolded learning environments. This reinforces that it is not the tool itself that matters most, but how we use it. Effective learning still depends on clear goals and opportunities for deep thinking. AI can support that process when integrated with intention and purpose. But students also need to engage critically with these tools, understanding when and how to use them. Without that awareness, AI risks becoming a shortcut that hinders progress rather than a meaningful amplifier of learning and productivity. In programming education, this has practical implications. Instead of testing for syntax recall in R, Python or SQL, we might focus more on modeling and solving real-world problems, building debugging and troubleshooting skills, and encouraging creative approaches to complex tasks. AI does not replace learning or teaching. But it can strengthen both when educators are supported to design learning experiences that use these tools well. That means giving educators practical examples, accessible tools, and strong communities of practice.
