The Big Opportunity in Reimagining Childcare and Learning At Maveron, we’ve spent years watching billions flow into K-12 ed tech and caregiving— yet, if we’re being honest, computers in the classroom haven't made a dent in student performance. And exits selling through the K12 channel have been underwhelming. From our vantage point, the real wins in education and childcare happen when you reinvent the entire experience. Sure, there’s a wave of AI-driven ed tech solutions (Magic School AI, Brisk Learning, etc.), but they face huge hurdles to scale: restricted budgets, slow procurement, and a system that hasn’t fully embraced even basic tech. If you want to understand what right looks like, instead look at Stride (worth $6B), Bright Horizons (approaching $8B), the University of Phoenix (once over $10B) and Duolingo ($13B) — they didn’t just add software; they created new models that parents and students embraced right away. We believe the next generation of billion-dollar companies will follow their lead by 1. Capturing high revenue per student: 2. Selling directly to parents: 3. Scaling in a capital-light way: 4. Leveraging AI for real efficiencies: Put simply, we see tomorrow’s category-defining companies moving beyond the tired “edtech vendor” label. They’ll look more like tech-enabled schools and micro-schools, childcare providers and full-featured AI-centric curriculum providers — reinventing both the experience and the economics, and creating brands that parents genuinely love (and pay for). An example of this next generation of provider is Lando, which aims to transform after-school programs for elementary-aged kids from glorified babysitting into truly enriching experiences. We first met and invested in Lando’s founders, Felix Hu and Blake Kavanaugh, back in early 2023. Felix is probably the world's foremost expert in blending the physical and digital to create learning experiences for kids. Blake had the playbook to scale that vision from one city to many. Parents want more than a safe daycare after the final bell, they want something their kids will get excited about. Lando sessions are each full-on classes — across subjects like coding, robotics and art. And because they offer entire classes, Lando can charge upwards of $2,000 per student per year. But what really stands out is Lando’s tech-enabled, marketplace-like model that enables them to scale quickly, city-by-city. The backbone of Lando is their AI. It connects instructor onboarding, curriculum delivery, even real-time coaching in the classroom. Since their instructors don’t need advanced qualifications, they can keep costs down. The result is a scalable, capital-light operation that delivers consistent quality. Lando is just the beginning. Everyone has a hot take on AI in Education. Here's mine. But it's not about the tech. It's grounded in practical implementation, understanding deeply how an education ecosystem works and what actually happens in a classroom each day. Inside out. I'm not a technical AI expert. But I've spent 17+ years in EdTech, I've been training my own Claude instance for 9 months to work faster and smarter, and I'm learning Agentic AI from people way smarter than me (looking at you, Kunal Dalal). Here's my thesis: We're in the dial-up era of AI. It feels like the 5th inning. We're probably still warming up. And most of what I see in K-12 AI right now? It's one of three things: AI FOR AI'S SAKE. No strategy. Inject some AI, put it in the pitch deck, call it innovation. Looks sexy. Adds little value. BASIC STUDENT-FACING AI. Look up an answer. Solve a problem. ChatGPT can do this. This isn't creating student agency it's inhibiting it. BASIC AI FOR EDUCATORS. Summarize data. Create documents faster. This is table stakes. It's 0.0001% of what's possible. So where's the real value? INTEGRATION. AI needs to plug into the district ecosystem — SSO, SIS, benchmark data, LMS. Without integration, you're a standalone tool. With it, you're part of the workflow. IMPLEMENTATION. What's the actual use case in a real school day? An AI tutor loaded with student data, lesson plans, state standards, and tutoring methodologies — deployed in intervention blocks with teacher insights? That's not a feature. That's a system. PD & TRAINING. Adults need the WHY before they buy in. One-time PD doesn't cut it. Ongoing training integrated into PLCs drives adoption that makes the AI smarter. Here's what I believe: Humans will always be the core of education. But the tools we're giving educators today aren't sufficient especially in high-needs communities with classrooms spanning 6+ grade levels. AI can close equity gaps at scale. But only if we stop treating it as the showy front-end feature... And start building it as the strategic engine on the backend integrated, intentional, outcome-driven. That's where the value is. That's my bet.

What resonated most with me is their foundational first step: "Research Before You Code." In a world obsessed with rapid deployment, Quill’s process begins with paper based exercises and deep collaboration with their 300-member Teacher Advisory Council to define what effective learning looks like before a single line of code is written. This educator centric model ensures that pedagogy drives the technology, not the other way around, turning teachers into the architects of the AI tools rather than just the recipients. This playbook is a must read for any education leader, curriculum designer, or administrator responsible for evaluating edtech. It provides a clear, actionable framework and a critical set of questions to ask any AI provider to separate genuine learning tools from generic tech. Something big just went GA quietly and I don't think enough people in education are talking about it yet. Microsoft just launched federated Copilot connectors — a new way to bring real-time data into M365 Copilot using MCP (Model Context Protocol). Not synced. Not indexed. Live, at the moment a user asks. I spent today building a custom one against the Microsoft Graph Education APIs using my personal MCP Server. It works. And the implications for education are significant. Think about what's always been hard in EDU Copilot deployments: the data that matters most — rosters, assignments, class activity, student progress — changes constantly. Traditional connectors sync on a schedule. By the time a teacher asks Copilot about their class, the data is already old. Federated connectors solve this differently. The data never leaves your system. It stays in the source, governed by your existing security and compliance controls. Copilot queries it live using the user's own identity and permissions. A teacher sees what they're allowed to see. Nothing more. That's not just a technical improvement. For K-12 and higher education institutions navigating FERPA, data residency requirements, and the politics of putting student data anywhere near an AI system — this architecture changes the conversation entirely. We're still early. But the foundation is here. And for those of us building AI experiences on top of M365 in education, this is the integration model we've been waiting for.
