    With the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT 4o that is extremely good at image generation and graphic design. I found myself going back to the Future of Jobs Report that World Economic Forum released early this year. Here's what I found: Unsurprisingly, AI and big data top the list as the fastest-growing skills that is becoming core to employers. But I wanted to understand what this 'AI & Big Data' skill means especially in the African context i.e for an African employee trying to stay relevant in the job market. According to a report by Microsoft Africa, The biggest impact of generative AI in Africa is likely to be seen in information work that already has some level of digitization. This includes knowledge-based roles like creating sales materials or planning campaigns and frontline sectors such as agriculture or healthcare as sector-specific applications emerge. Jobs in content creation, data analysis, customer service, and administration will see major AI-driven changes. Content creators and designers may have tasks automated, while data analysts will use AI to process larger datasets. Customer service roles may shift as chatbots handle inquiries, and administrative tasks like scheduling become AI-assisted. However, these shifts create opportunities. Demand is rising for professionals who can refine AI outputs, bridging AI capabilities with industry expertise in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and education. Reskilling will require AI literacy, data interpretation, and problem-solving skills to integrate AI into business needs. Leveraging these opportunities requires access to devices and data, knowledge of generative AI systems, and the ability to translate their use into meaningful outcomes.Beyond technical skills, human capabilities like emotional intelligence, creativity, and ethical judgment will remain crucial. Adaptability and continuous learning will help professionals navigate AI’s rapid evolution. However, a McKinsey report suggests that Africa's role might be relegated to lower-value tasks unless significant obstacles such as cost, computing capacity, and investor confidence are addressed. Overcoming these barriers is essential for African countries to reap the full benefits of generative AI. Africa must address challenges like cost and computing capacity to fully benefit from AI. While there’s a temporary grace period for Africans before full AI disruption, professionals must act now, combining human expertise with AI literacy to remain competitive and shape AI’s role in African industries.

Basic competencies like Microsoft Office appear in one-third of vacancies, while advanced skills in computer science and data analysis feature in 20 percent.     By 2030, digital skills will no longer be optional; they will be a necessity. Across Africa, economies are rapidly transforming due to the increased integration of technology. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2030, 85 million jobs globally will be displaced by automation, but 97 million new jobs will emerge that require a new set of skills. These jobs will be heavily reliant on digital literacy, data management, and advanced technology skills. So, what does this mean for us? The job market is evolving faster than many of us can imagine. In Africa, the digital economy is expected to generate $180 billion by 2025, according to the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Whether you’re in banking, education, agriculture, or even healthcare, the ability to use digital tools and technologies will determine whether you thrive or are left behind. What are the key skills to learn before 2030? 1. Digital Marketing: Businesses are moving online, and having the ability to drive sales and visibility through online platforms will make you indispensable. 2. Data Analysis: With more data being generated every day, the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data will be a valuable skill. 3. Coding and Programming: The backbone of tech infrastructure. From website development to app creation, coding skills are increasingly in demand. 4. Cybersecurity: As we move more operations online, the need to protect information from cyberattacks will grow exponentially. 5. Cloud Computing: The future of data storage and management lies in the cloud. Knowing how to manage cloud systems will put you ahead. 6. AI and Machine Learning: Understanding how AI works and how to integrate it into business operations will be a game-changer. 7. Blockchain: With financial systems evolving, blockchain technology will become a critical skill, especially as cryptocurrencies gain more traction. Why is this so important for Africa? According to the African Development Bank, Africa’s youth population is expected to double by 2050. This means millions of young people will be looking for opportunities in a job market that is becoming more tech-driven. Without the right skills, many will find themselves unemployed or underemployed in industries that no longer exist. Investing in digital skills today ensures that we are part of the global digital transformation and that we can compete on a global scale. More importantly, these skills will enable us to solve local problems using technology, fostering innovation that can reshape sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education. If we don’t act now, we risk being left behind in a world that is quickly becoming digital-first. The time to start equipping yourself with digital skills is now. The future won’t wait for you to catch up.

    For over a decade, Africa has been running a well-intentioned… but dangerous experiment. We’ve built thousands of programs around one promise: “Learn software. Build apps. Get a job.” So we trained armies of people to build: mobile apps websites dashboards CRUD systems And we called it “future skills”. But AI just changed the scoreboard. AI won’t kill creativity. It will kill routine coding. A huge chunk of what we label as “software engineering” today is becoming the equivalent of: learning how to use a fax machine… in the era of WhatsApp. Here’s the uncomfortable part: While we’re still funding “apps-first” bootcamps at scale, the real world is moving to systems. The next decade isn’t “apps”. It’s embedded systems. Because everything valuable is becoming a computer: energy systems payment devices logistics hardware farms factories drones vehicles cameras medical equipment edge AI boxes local clouds operating systems that must run offline And embedded systems are the bridge between code and reality. At ARED, we build edge infrastructure + our own OS layer + ML stack. When we needed engineers who can handle embedded/Linux/OS-level work… We couldn’t find enough on the continent. So we hired outside Africa. That’s not an “Africa lacks talent” problem. That’s a pipeline problem. We are training people for the wrong bottleneck. The question we should be asking every accelerator, university, donor, and government program: Are we preparing young Africans to build the systems Africa will run… or just the apps that will be generated? Because the opportunity is not “another delivery app”. The opportunity is: embedded C/C++ Linux + networking device security offline-first edge architecture OTA updates & reliability hardware/software integration robotics & autonomy foundations This is where the demand is exploding. This is where the salaries are rising. This is where the strategic advantage will be. If you’re funding “digital skills” in Africa, I’ll say it plainly: Add a serious embedded/systems track — or we’re training obsolescence at scale. If you run a program doing embedded systems in Africa, tag it. If you’re an engineer willing to mentor or teach, speak up.
