Lindsay White shared thisThere comes a point in many founders’ journeys when success starts to feel surprisingly heavy. The business is growing. Clients are happy. The team is expanding. The goals that once felt far away are finally becoming real. And yet, behind the scenes, you may be asking - why doesn’t this feel the way I thought it would? A client I’ll call Sarah had built an incredible business. She had a strong reputation, a capable team, growing revenue, and even a waiting list of clients. From the outside, she looked remarkably successful. But when we began working together, she was exhausted. Every decision came back to her. Every problem landed on her desk. She had started to believe that carrying everything was simply what good leadership looked like. Over time, we worked on helping her step out of the role of rescuer and into the role of leader. She began asking better questions instead of always providing the answer. She allowed her team to work through problems. She clarified expectations, had difficult conversations, and slowly began trusting herself again. Then one day she said something I’ll never forget: “I’ve never felt more like myself. I feel lighter and clearer. I can feel my confidence coming back.” That is what leadership growth can feel like. It isn’t always about becoming someone new. Sometimes it’s about remembering the leader you were before the pressure, the fear, and the responsibility convinced you that you had to carry everything alone. Because confidence isn’t something you find, it’s something you remember. And sometimes the work of becoming the leader your business needs is really the work of finding your way back to yourself. Long post incoming! For the past 3 years I have been intensely struggling to find employment in Canada, a country that has been my home for 8 years of my life. My visa runs out on July 28th, and my current plan is to leave Canada and reunite with my family until I can figure my life out. I have stayed here, possibly against my better judgement, because despite its issues I have a genuine love for this country, its people, its culture (yes, you have a culture!) and its incredible natural beauty. Its current issues are sadly not unique to Canada; it is affecting everyone on a global scale. For two years I moved to Calgary under the assumption that there were more jobs than in Kelowna, where I had spent the first 6 years of my journey. Turns out the majority of the jobs posted online were ghosts, and I was quickly running out of time. Two jobs didn't work out, and while I had managed to secure another work visa for one year, I had made some stupid decisions I still regret to this day. I had to learn that in order to get anywhere in any job market, establishing meaningful connections is paramount, and it's a very slow, meticulous process. I didn't find the right connections until late last year. Once again, I'm running out of time, and now I'm running out of options. Anyone who has been through the immigration process will tell you it is complicated, stressful and takes a significant toll on your mental health. What makes it especially difficult is constantly having to explain and justify decisions that most people, including your own family, won't fully understand. It has cost me opportunities and even friendships. I would love to keep building a life in this country, so if you know of anyone struggling to find a senior admin, an executive assistant or even a manager locally, please reach out to me. Having driven several days alone across the country, I am now open to any location that needs me. Having worked in multiple industries, I think on my feet, learn quickly and I am extremely flexible. I haven't given up yet, even if I have to leave Canada now and return later. I am eternally grateful to Integrated Staffing and SailGP for giving me the opportunity to be a Catering Assistant in Halifax, helping to feed genuinely incredible people from across the globe and embracing Halifax's sailing culture. Eternally grateful to Babette M., Cara Hughes, Lindsay White and all of Lean In Network, Calgary for their help and support while volunteering for them; I am sorry I haven't been able to contribute more. Eternally grateful to Vanessa Green, Mariana Morgado Huerta, Tasia Diaz and everyone at RefundPros for their continued support and encouragement after I moved out of Kelowna (they do incredible work supporting e-commerce businesses, go check them out!) Most people would move out of the country completely, and I wouldn't blame them for making that decision. I have hope, and I don't want to give up yet.

It usually isn't. It's a leadership and organizational design problem. If your team can't make decisions without you... If every question lands back on your desk... If you can't take a real vacation because everything grinds to a halt... You've built a business that depends on you instead of a business that can scale. Lindsay White shared thisThere's a kind of "successful" that looks great on paper and feels exhausting to live inside. Revenue is climbing and your team is genuinely capable, yet you're saying things like "I'm up to my eyeballs" regularly. A founder I worked with said this, with a laugh, in a session together: "I think I've become the emergency department for my own business." She was only half joking, because every approval and every "can I just ask you something" was getting wheeled straight to her desk. So we started with one small change. A stretch of protected time each week where she wasn't in meetings or client work, just space to think ahead and decide where her energy actually belonged. Then we reshaped her one-on-ones, moving them away from status-update checklists and into real coaching conversations, where she'd ask her people what was getting in their way and where they needed her. Within a few weeks she stopped feeling like she had to have every answer, and started asking better questions instead. That's what this week's episode gets into! Then another, and another, until you look up and you're the one spinning every plate in the building. 🍽️ So many of us land here, especially women in business. We're wired to catch things before they break, and say yes to piling more on. (Raising my own hand here too, friend. 🙋♀️) But that starts to cost you. And it turns into late nights answering questions only you can answer, or dinners where your head is still back at your desk. Little by little, the business you built to give you a good life becomes the reason you don't have time to live it. This isn't the first encounter seeing a man in his late 40s/early 50s while out for my walk, but, I hadn't seen this man for a bit. Driving home, he was inching across the street while I slowed to wait for him and the back of him, including his attire and bald head immediately hit me hard. Not only did he remind me of my late husband, but I am assuming this man is recovering from a stroke or brain injury. No use of his one arm and a walking cane with knee braces... this literally made me tear up. Following Aaron's passing, there were many conversations around what if he would've survived a heart attack? You can imagine those conversations... the deep thoughts, the what if's. Which are all normal, by the way. As humans, we are conditioned to create and build stories to share, navigate, and begin to heal. Most importantly: to know we are not alone. But, being one of those days and still the odd Monday slides in weirdly, watching this man AND THEN bumping into him 25 mins later while I was now on my walk, I simply said hi. We briefly touched on the "cool weather today" as obviously he is relearning to use his brain and this now made me think of my late mother in law. I.also immediately thought "this guy is my hero today." Oh, the beauty and the puddles grief takes you through. The words that come into mind. It also reminds me every day to be thankful no matter what and what a gift to love, to feel hurt, to once share a life with someone while this entire time rediscovering me. To those of you having a season, a day, or a moment- I see you. Dear Aaron 🤍 thanks for putting another human hero in my path today.

It was a great choice as it sparked some excellent conversation about what we thought the book was about and what transformation means. Looking forward to the next one in September!
