AI is likely to be with us for a while. So if we care about people, the planet, and the public good, we need to keep learning and keep talking to each other. That’s why I created this hand-drawn advocacy map. It’s especially helpful when you need a reminder that the best choice is to approach this moment with curiosity. #nonprofits #community

Meenakshi (Meena) Das shared thisToday marks 5 years since I started Namaste Data. And this is a post about what made those 1,500 or so days possible. This is not about revenue, clients, wins, losses, or any earth-shattering numbers. This, however, is about kindness and generosity. And while I started this work five years ago, it has never been something I built alone. See I am the product of the kindness of many. The intellectual kindness of authors — and those who choose not to call themselves authors — who share their wisdom freely and generously. The emotional kindness of strangers who shared their smiles when I really needed one, without me even having to ask. The cognitive and spiritual kindness of trees, clouds, birds, books, and water — who shared their curiosity, stillness, and meaning when I did not realize I needed them most. The financial kindness of partners and collaborators who chose to place their trust in what I believed in, even before it was fully built. The social kindness of many on this platform, in our sector, and in my newsletters — who raised their hands over and over to say, “I see you.” And all the other forms of kindness from my family and friends, who held me close on the days I simply refused to see any gifts in me. They protected me when I was harsh on my work beyond reason. i AM the product of the kindness of many. And I am incredibly grateful to be part of this work alongside you on the good, bad, and hard days. This work is what it is not because of what it may become, or what it promises for the future. It is what it is because of the people who choose to live within it — no matter the title, geography, or duration. That is how the last 1,500 days happened. One day at a time, with kindness. Meenakshi (Meena) Das shared thisThe 81st edition of the newsletter 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 is here. In two weeks, the AI for Good Summit 2026 starts in Geneva. It will bring together some of the smartest, most senior, and powerful leaders from around the world. That space will produce multiple short and long sessions, panels, and exhibits from tech companies. Watching that from afar – to see those people gather to talk about AI felt like a good-enough starting step. But I am choosing to ask a different question from that space now. I think it’s no longer enough to have the right or right-enough people in the room. It is equally important to understand and acknowledge what happens in the year after they leave. This edition is about what I want to see happen because of Geneva – in funder boardrooms, in nonprofit budgets, in community-level consent practices, in the retraining and transition infrastructure that should be rising at the same pace as the deployment, placing a timeline a year from now. Read this to explore what you and I should seek from it. And read it with four truths I want us to hold together: ● that frameworks alone are not infrastructure, ● that what we budget represents our commitment, ● that how we approach AI impacts our democracy, and that’s not just another legal or HR problem, ● and that a summit of this scale means we need to map what we should expect in the months after. #nonprofits #nonprofitleadership #community

Meenakshi (Meena) Das shared thisI often get to see AI support for nonprofits sought/described as volunteer-based, scoped hours—offers like AI assessments in 2 hours, AI policies in 1 hour, all to help organizations move faster. And while I understand the generosity in that idea (I volunteer most weekends in the year), something about it makes it uncomfortable. Because nonprofits need support on this topic, yes. And yes, volunteers matter deeply. And yes, generosity has always been part of how this sector survives. But what happens when generosity starts standing in for infrastructure? AI is here in our sector, wrapped around words like efficiency, experimentation, readiness, innovation, and urgency…Some of if (that wrapping) is useful, most of it is exciting, and none of it deals with equity issues. We need to understand well - the decisions underneath AI are (and will remain about) trust, accountability, and nuances within our communities. And that requires commitment (including fiscal commitment). Meenakshi (Meena) Das shared thisThe answers you seek depend on the questions you ask. I am looking at this from the perspective of data collection in our field. For nonprofits, collecting data is never just about gathering information. It's also about how honest we are willing to be, how much vulnerability we can handle, and how ready we are to truly listen. If our questions are rushed, defensive, too safe, or only meant to confirm what we already believe, the data will show that. Send such a data collection tool out into the world, and our worry becomes: how do we get a high enough response rate on it? But sometimes, the real issue with data collection isn't the response rate or whether people want to answer. The real issue can be that those rushed, defensive, non-meaningful questions can make your community feel the organization is not really ready to hear. Community listening is not proven by sending out a survey. It's shown by the quality of your questions, how clear your intentions are, and your willingness to be changed by the answers you receive. That requires ● Honesty. Honesty about what you really want to know. Honesty about what you are ready to act on. Honesty about what you may not want to hear. ● Vulnerability. Because good questions can unsettle certainty. They can expose gaps. They can reveal harm. They can make visible the distance between what we say we value and what people actually experience. That's where the most useful answers are found. So before your next survey, listening session, intake form, feedback tool, or evaluation, I think some of the most important questions are internal: ● What are we really trying to understand? ● What are we brave enough to hear, acknowledge, and commit to act on? ● What will we do if the answers require more from us than we expected? The answers you seek depend on the questions you ask. And the questions you ask reflect the kind of organization you are willing to become. #nonprofits #community

It is the people who sit down around it, and lately I have been thinking about how much I owe the ones who took a seat early and helped me see what this thing could become. Meghan Walsh played herself at the table and reminded me that knowing what you will not do is its own kind of wisdom. Meenakshi (Meena) Das gave us a sequence for reading data that I will be repeating for years. Julia Campbell built the room that made both of those moments possible. None of this is mine alone, and it never was. So starting this week, I am going to spend some time celebrating the people behind the Roundtable, the Hosts and Guests and collaborators who keep showing up and making a more generous sector feel less like an argument and more like something we are already building together. The table only works because they sit at it. More soon. For now, the crossword answers are up, and I would love to know which of these people you want to hear from first.
