Doreen Bogdan-Martin shared thisI am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend, colleague and mentor, Gary Fowlie. I had the privilege of working with Gary for many years. He gave the very best advice—always thoughtful, honest and grounded in a deep understanding of people. I learned so much from him, and I will miss his wisdom, his warmth and his incredible sense of humour. Gary was passionate about all things digital and understood clearly how technology could transform lives. He advocated for a free and open internet, ‘mobiles for midwives’, broadband for sustainable development, and the need for digital literacy programmes for children. He was a champion of the World Summit on the Information Society and its vision of an inclusive, people-centred information society. He put International Telecommunication Union on the map in NYC, becoming the 1st head of the ITU liaison office to the United Nations. Gary seemed to know everyone—and everyone knew Gary. Walking with him through the halls of the UN or along the streets of New York was never a simple walk. There was always someone to greet, a story to exchange and, very often, the question: “How about those Mets?” Gary had a remarkable gift for connecting people, ideas and institutions. His contribution to ITU and to the wider UN family will live on, as will the impact he had on so many of us personally. My deepest condolences go to Karen, Liam, Luke, Spencer and all of Gary’s family and many friends around the world. Rest in peace, Gary. I will miss you.

Doreen Bogdan-Martin shared thisThat’s a wrap on an incredible #GenevaDigitalWeek, with over 12,000 participants that came together from more than 170 countries to connect, learn, build, collaborate and create new opportunities. Our week began with the first UN Global Dialogue on AI governance #AIDialogue, setting the stage for inclusive international cooperation on AI. Throughout the #WSIS Forum under our renewed mandate, we witnessed this multi-stakeholder community united in championing a shared vision of a purpose-driven journey from information society to intelligent society. And with #Partner2Connect surpassing our hundred-billion-dollar goal and reaching over 120 billion USD in commitments, we are moving closer to making meaningful connectivity a reality for everyone. At #AIforGood 2026, it was clear that AI's full potential for the benefit of all, requires urgent action on access, on trust, and on turning solutions into real-world impact. Convening an exceptional community of thought-leaders and practitioners from around the globe, #AIforGood also underscored the importance of using our AI agency for good. As the United Nations Secretary-General declared at the start of the week: “We cannot vibe-code the future of humanity." Our shared digital future must be built deliberately, collaboratively & with human agency at every step. Let's remember to keep humanity in the loop. And to keep using our AI agency for good.

Doreen Bogdan-Martin shared thisI'm excited to announce the launch of the AI for Good Global Commission. It's a privilege to serve as Vice-Chair alongside Co-Chairs H.E. President Paul Kagame and Marc Benioff. AI is quickly redefining how economies function and societies evolve. The opportunities are extraordinary, but so are the challenges of building trust and closing widening gaps. We're going to need all hands on deck to ensure AI benefits all people. That's why the Commission brings together a unique set of visionaries, each with the reach, credibility, and ambition to scale our efforts globally. We know this model works. For more than 15 years, the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development brought together heads of state, industry leaders, and international organizations to mobilize partnerships, investment, and policy innovation towards universal, meaningful connectivity. Now we're applying that same approach to AI. I look forward to working with this extraordinary group of leaders, and to seeing everyone at our inaugural meeting next week in Geneva. H.E.
