Peter Irikovsky gefällt dasPeter Irikovsky gefällt dasLast month I sat down for fireside chats with Olga at the SASK meetups in Košice and Žilina. Years ago I had the chance to be part of the Exponea leadership team, the company Jozo and Peter built. What impressed me the most was never just the product or later the exit. It was how widely ownership was shared across the team and how deliberately it created a new generation of entrepreneurs for the Slovak ecosystem. When we at Eldison recently counted the companies (co-)founded or (co-)led by Exponea alumni, we got to 27. That is what employee ownership does at ecosystem scale. PayPal did it for Silicon Valley. Skype did it for Estonia. Exponea is still quietly doing it for Slovakia. But ownership alone is not enough. Someone has to build the rooms where the next generation meets its first investor, hears its first honest feedback, finds its first co-founder. That is what SASK has been building for 14 years. Not just a gala but infrastructure: meetups across the country, a bootcamp with 40+ international mentors, a community that keeps showing up. In Žilina, I watched students who had travelled hundreds of kilometres just to pitch their demos to whoever would listen. Ecosystems are built by two things working together. Stories like Exponea create people with capital, experience and confidence; people who have seen in practice what it takes to build a great company. Infrastructure gives them, and the ones coming after them, a place to start. Thank you Olga and Viktoria for two great conversations, and the whole SASK team for the energy in both cities.

Peter Irikovsky hat darauf reagiertPeter Irikovsky hat darauf reagiertAfter 8️⃣ years with Bloomreach my time has come to say goodbye! 💛 Before writing this post, I wanted to thank so many individuals, but that would have been such a looong post 😀 It had been a crazy good ride, the best career experience so far and only because of the people around me 🙏 There are however 2 people that shaped my career (& life!) to a stage where I am right now and from the depths of my heart I want to thank them publicly (and I want to share one biggest lesson I learned from them): Peter Irikovsky, former CEO of exponea (acquired by bloomreach), who had this vision, crazy vision with people on the first place (always!) - he showed me, that there isn't a challenge big enough, that you can't accept 🚀 PS: Peter almost fired me at one point 😀 Ursula Kralova, Chief People officer Bloomreach, my manager since 2020, we've worked together during my lowest and highest points in my career. I have huge admiration for the level of commitment Ursula is bringing to daily work with deep focus on company's culture - which is defined not just by the good times, but also by how we navigate through the tough times together 💛 One quarter of my life I spent with Bloomreach... 🥹 I enjoyed it to the fullest! And now, a new challenge has to be accepted 💪 I'm going back to startup world... but on that sometimes later.

Podľa dát to nerobí kultúra ani väčší optimizmus — robí to daňový systém. Z prieskumu Carta o austrálskych startupoch: ▪️ Austrália a Nový Zéland: 51,8 % uplatnených opcií ▪️ USA: 32,2 % Keď uplatnenie opcie neznamená okamžitú daň, ľudia ich reálne uplatňujú. Keď áno, mnohí ich radšej nechajú prepadnúť. 💡 Čo robí Austrália inak („startup concession”) Pri kvalifikovaných startupoch platí: ▪️ Žiadna daň pri pridelení ani pri uplatnení opcie ▪️ Celý zisk sa zdaní až pri predaji — a to ako kapitálový, nie ako mzda ▪️ Pri držbe nad 12 mesiacov 50 % zľava na kapitálový zisk (lehota beží už od pridelenia) Zamestnanec teda neplatí daň z papiera, ktorý ešte nevie speňažiť. Platí až vtedy, keď reálne zarobí — a z polovičného základu. 📜 A nedospeli k tomu hneď ▪️ 2009: zdanenie posunuli prakticky na moment pridelenia — daň z niečoho, čo zamestnanec ešte nemá v ruke. Startup ESOP kultúra skoro zomrela. ▪️ 2015: zásadná oprava — zaviedli startup concession. ▪️ 2022: zjednodušili reguláciu a znížili náklady pre najmenšie firmy. Vedomá, doladená štátna politika — nie náhoda. ⚖️ Podmienky (aby to nebola diera) Výhoda je úzko ohraničená: ▪️ Nelistovaná firma mladšia než 10 rokov ▪️ Agregovaný obrat skupiny pod 50 mil. AUD ▪️ Opcie pridelené za trhovú cenu, držba min. 3 roky ▪️ Zamestnanec drží menej než 10 % Kľúčové: nástroj môže byť v zamestnávateľovi alebo aj v jeho materskej spoločnosti. 🇸🇰 A čo Slovensko? Lepšie, než sa zdá — ale s rezervou Aj u nás existuje oslobodenie pri uplatnení opcií na akcie/podiel. Podmienky sú však prísnejšie, než sa zvykne hovoriť: ▪️ Zamestnanec pre firmu reálne pracuje ▪️ Firma doposiaľ nevyplatila zisk a nie je listovaná ▪️ A hlavne: zamestnávateľ musí byť registrovaný k dani z príjmov na Slovensku — prakticky SK firma, alebo zahraničná firma so SK stálou prevádzkarňou (PE) Pri predaji sa však kapitálový zisk zdaní progresívne (19–35 %) plus 16 % zdravotné odvody — bez zľavy obdobnej austrálskym 50 %. 🚀 Inšpirácia pre SR Dve cielené zmeny by nás posunuli na svetový zlatý trend: ▪️ Zľava, oslobodenie alebo znížená sadzba na kapitálový zisk z kvalifikovaných ESOP akcií (austrálsky model) ▪️ Uvoľniť podmienku zamestnávateľa — umožniť oslobodenie aj pri akciách prepojenej osoby, napr. zahraničnej matky SK firmy bez SK PE. Austrália to už pozná a vyriešilo by to cezhraničné ESOP-y. Talent dnes nezískaš eurom za eurom. Získaš ho podielom na hodnote, ktorú spolu tvoríte — ale len ak ho daňový systém nezdaní skôr, než vôbec dozrie. At our event ESOP through the eyes of world-class founders from Czechia and Slovakia, I had the privilege to discuss with Richard (Mews), Peter (exponea (acquired by bloomreach)) and Richard (Whalebone) why ESOPs are not just a benefit or a line in the cap table. They can shape company culture, hiring, fundraising and the ability to navigate difficult moments. This was the first event of this kind for us. In many ways, a test case. We wanted to see whether there is appetite for a deeper, practical discussion among founders, operators, investors and the wider startup community on topics that matter when building ambitious companies. After yesterday, the answer feels clear. It was great to see so many scaleup founders in one place and to feel that people genuinely wanted to go deep. We would like to continue this format with other topics in the future. A few points especially resonated with me: → Ownership is tested in crises, not in good times: Mews and Exponea showed that when a company builds an ownership mindset early, people often behave not just as employees, but as co-builders. → Liquidity is the moment of truth: A secondary transaction or an exit turns ESOP from a promise on paper into something real. → Investors should be part of the discussion: If employees increase the value of the whole company, dilution from the ESOP should not fall only on the founders. → Europe needs a stronger ownership culture. Not only to compete for talent, but also to create the next generation of founders, angels and operators. We would also love to explore the “mafia/family effect” around companies like Exponea, Mews and Whalebone more in the future. When you look at the companies already founded or led by former Exponeans (we counted to 27), and then imagine a similar effect multiplied by the scale at which Mews operates today (ESOP worth $0.5bn now), you start to see how meaningful their long-term impact on Czech/Slovak ecosystem can be. Bude to úplný prechod od CUDA do ekosystému Huawei CANN, bežiaceho na čipoch Huawei Ascend. To znamená jedno – prelomenie závislosti, ktorá robila NVIDIA nedotknuteľnou. Dokonca aj Jensen Huang to už pripustil. Ak to bude fungovať vo veľkom meradle, je to desivý scenár pre americké firmy. Čínski tech giganti ako Alibaba, ByteDance a Tencent už objednávajú stovky tisíc čipov Ascend. Trhové podiely sa rýchlo menia – domáce čipy sú už na 41 %, NVIDIA klesá na 55 % na čínskom trhu AI serverov. DeepSeek V4 navyše údajne ponúka API náklady za zlomok ceny amerických konkurentov. 300 dolárov za masívne workloady, ktoré by na modeloch OpenAI stáli 2 500+ dolárov, alebo dokonca 5 000 dolárov na Anthropicu. Takže nejde len o jeden model. Ide o to, že Čína buduje plne nezávislý AI stack – čipy, frameworky, modely a aplikácie. Úplne mimo kontroly USA. NVIDIA nestráca len predaje - stráca svoj vplyv na globálny AI štandard.

Claude figured out the plan: NLP transformers for sentiment analysis across every review. Then multiple parallel agents rewrote all our AI-generated review summaries - plus did a comprehensive analysis of which merchants need attention and draft communications about what needs to improve. 20 minutes of my time. 4 hours for the AI. On my laptop. This is how I want to see AI first company including CEO working. Why does it matter? Nobody's life got better from doom-scrolling. Groupon exists to get people offline - to real experiences, real places, real people. Every local business we help get better, every deal we make more trustworthy - that's one more person going to a spa, trying a new restaurant with friends, taking their kids to an experience they wouldn't have found otherwise. At Anthropic, Boris Cherny ships 20-30 PRs per day and manages a team. A team of 2 is huge now. At Groupon we're building the same way - Project Foundry, a complete transformation to become AI-native. Agents do the operational work. Humans focus on judgment, strategy, and creativity. I have multiple roles open in the CEO Office for people who want to work at this pace. Not full-stack in the engineering sense - full-stack entrepreneur. Talk to the customer, understand the problem, build the solution, ship it. In days, not weeks. Structured thinkers. Analytical minds. Fast learners who don't wait for assignments. Curiosity non-negotiable. Passivity disqualifying. This is the best time in history to be a builder. Don't waste it. Hosted by MEP Marcos Ros Sempere as part of the EUROPEAN URBAN FORUM, the discussion couldn't have been timelier: 🏘️ Member States are currently finalising their #SocialClimatePlans and National Building Renovation Plans #NBRPs. With over 46 million Europeans affected by energy poverty, the stakes are high for getting these instruments right. 💰Discussions about the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework #MFF have begun. More funding should be directed towards securing affordable housing. 🔦 Key insights from the discussion: Zuzana Matusova shared quotes that CEE residents submitted to the European Social Survey that remind us that "it's hard to think about future climate when wages are low and living costs high." Energy poverty and affordable housing are two sides of the same coin that must be tackled together. Panel 1️⃣ showcased national approaches with Stepan Ripka (Czech government) and Stefan Moser (European Commission's Housing Task Force), Diana Horvat (Croatia's Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction & State Assets), and Benedek Jávor (Budapest's EU office), demonstrating how EU and national funding can rebuild communities and improve quality of life – the long-term sustainability of such funding streams is imperative to secure.
