CWG athletes told to highlight govt, IOA roles

NEW DELHI: Indian athletes competing in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have been directed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to avoid commenting on “team matters or internal discussions” during media interactions and instead highlight the role of the “Govt of India and Indian Olympic Association (IOA)”.The directions are part of a four-page set of media, social media and digital-media guidelines issued by the IOA for athletes, accredited personnel and national sports federations, a copy of which is with TOI. “Do not promote or endorse any personal sponsor, personal foundation, commercial brand, or third party,” the guidelines state. This marks a departure from previous multi-sport events, where athletes often acknowledged support from private sports organisations and sponsors.“Any AI-generated content in any form is strictly prohibited,” the document also adds. It also directs athletes not to share confidential information, travel plans, accommodation details or security arrangements on personal social media platforms or messaging applications.The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) on Monday organised a send-off ceremony for the 28-member Indian CWG para contingent. The para athletes are part of the wider IOA contingent, which comprises both able-bodied and para competitors.Expressing confidence in the team’s prospects, PCI president Devendra Jhajharia said the country’s para athletes were capable of delivering a record-breaking performance at the Games, which begin on Thursday, July 23.“Our para athletes are ready to create history in Glasgow,” he said.
