AIIMS Expert Recommends Urgent Care; Sonam Wangchuk Shifted To Safdarjung Hospital
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been shifted to Safdarjung Hospital after his health reportedly deteriorated on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. According to Delhi Police, the move was made on doctors' advice and in compliance with directions of the Delhi High Court.Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital said Wangchuk is suffering from dehydration and has developed low potassium levels, worsening starvation-related ketosis, and compensated metabolic acidosis after nearly three weeks of fasting. An independent AIIMS expert has endorsed the hospital's recommendation for immediate oral or intravenous fluid and electrolyte therapy. However, Wangchuk has refused intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and medication despite repeated counselling by doctors. His wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has sought his discharge, requested that no treatment be administered without the family's consent, and demanded access to medical records and a second medical opinion. The hospital says Wangchuk remains conscious and under continuous monitoring while efforts continue to persuade him and his family to accept the recommended treatment.
