Tom McCallum shared thisMy briliant friend Marla Dukharan has recently done a (pro bono) report on Cayman (unsurprisingly, she has grown to love Cayman!), you can download it from her site. Cayman is indeed drifting to an unknown population size. Her report shows that the population growth rate continues to be high (and comes from immigration, the birth rate is very low), yet almost all of that population growth gets sucked into increase in government spending, with the vast majority of that going into increased government employment, very little is going into infrastructure and social investment for the future. When you ally that to the vital importance of risk assessment in your role as mountain leader, I love how you a) ask your group their score repeatedly throughout the day, and b) that you include yourself in the matrix. As you know, I've been in the mountains with you both in winter and in summer, and I do very much want to make it happen again, so do keep me on your email list for summer groups, particularly mountain bathing and similar! I woke up without the usual energy, focus and confidence I expect from myself. My first instinct was to ignore it and just push through. But one of the strongest beliefs I have as a mountain leader is the value of a proper risk assessment. The bigger the mountain adventure becomes, the more important a structured decision-making process like the Werner Munter 3x3 (or 3x4 in my own adaptation) becomes. Not only looking at the conditions and the terrain, but also at the people in the group… including yourself: the leader. The human factor is often the most underestimated part of any adventure. In a world where we are often expected to be strong, fit and always in control, showing vulnerability can feel uncomfortable. Especially in traditionally “macho” environments like outdoor sports and football. But also as a businessleader, parent or teacher. Todays column by journalist Hugo Borst in AD about bullying and football culture made me reflect on this. But is true leadership about pretending everything is fine? I don’t think so. Leadership is about awareness. Making honest assessments. Knowing when to adapt, ask for support, and dare to change plans or your approach. Vulnerability is not weakness. It is information. Tom McCallum shared thisI was pondering what leadership advice I might give Andy Burnham, then also thought, what advice would the "Augmented Mentor" version of me, AskTom.chat give. I found the reply interesting, particularly the closing question: "Which of those four is the one you think is most likely to get quietly dropped once the day-to-day pressure of Number 10 hits — because that's usually where the real risk sits?" (As I wrote earlier this week, the original AskTom.chat was limited to my corpus of work, 2,091 articles spanning over a million words. The new one takes that voice and thinking and adds in external references via Claude Opus 4.8. This is the type of output it is creating.)

Do read this piece and the Ten Principles of National Leadership within it. It all starts with uniting behind a common Purpose. To create that unity a Leader must have trust and control and continuously build trust. As I say; “Leadership is about People, end of story” and that “the one line job description of a CEO is “Keeper of the Vision””. The role of any leader, and for the CEO of “UK plc”, the Prime Minister is therefore simple. First set out the Vision, that shared Purpose, then focus at all times on creating, maintaining and building the conditions for that to be achieved. Trust is the outcome of that and is built every day in every action. These are times of challenge but therefore also of great opportunity. Am happy to be part of vocL alongside a group of purposeful leaders. As part of the growing global movement that is #walkabout, this was the first of our monthly informal discussion walks with an eclectic and interesting mix of Derbians. The weather and holidays meant we had a small group for our first outing, but from small acorns … A fitting start from The Museum of Making; formerly Lombes Mill and often described as the worlds first factory. Then on through the River Gardens, Historic Market Hall (with its St Pancras like roof) and the Cathedral Quarter. Great discussion; reflecting on practical options to create more opportunity across UK society. A big subject; we touched education, SME’s, social enterprises and giving-back. From a personal perspective; it was great to re-discover some of the sights around Derby I’d not seen since childhood and to see people enjoying the river gardens again (as they used to in the 1970s). Love the way they've been out promoting the charity ride too!Tom McCallum shared thisEverything we do at Devon Air Ambulance (DAAT) is for the purpose of delivering our mission of transforming time-critical care through prevention, treatment and recovery. In the current super weather, what better way to get out around our local #Devon community and continue spreading the word, than by bike! And especially in the context of our inaugural 12 September Cycle Challenge, which is all about raising funds to keep our services going. The 30, 50, and 100 mile routes have been designed to make this event truly inclusive, whilst also offering the challenge of exploring some of our beautiful but enormous county. I joined one of our supporters, Dan Gregory, and we cycled over 100km around key Exeter and East Devon landmarks, including our main airbase and some of our charity shops. We promoted our cycle challenge, the new jersey - and engaged with the community about the charity, in the process of the journey. It was great to visit some of our DAAT charity shops, chat with staff, volunteers and the many people visiting the shops. Tom McCallum shared thisI love this so much, this is exactly how I have thought about building my own mid-life (and beyond) pyramid. As often, though, my sage friend Chip Conley has got me thinking "what's next", and I sent him this note today: "Weirdly enough, I’ve got all of this in place yet I sometimes still feel edgy, like there is one more level. My sense at the moment is that it is similar to how athletes can feel after they spend so many years reaching the top, winning the gold medal, breaking the world record etc. I know several such athletes and, at such moments, sometimes they felt an odd kind of "down", as in “now what ?” I recognise how blessed I am (and that I planned for it and worked the plan for many years) to be here, but it is weird. Maybe there is no next step on the pyramid, or perhaps I need to BASE jump off the top and find a new pyramid to build." Sadly, Abe only lived to 62, but later in his life, he started applying his iconic Hierarchy of Needs to organizations, which ultimately led me to writing a book in honor of him called PEAK: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow. This week, as I tried to nurse my midlife doggie Jamie back to health after being in the ICU for a few days, I pondered what a PyraMidlife graphic might look like. And, voila, here it is. Paul's full comment; "I'm genuinely excited by the prospect of a Prime Minister who understands the realities of running and growing businesses outside of London. It feels refreshing to have the opportunity for that perspective to be represented at the highest level, and I'm optimistic about what that could bring. "There is a huge wealth of opportunity across the North. It's not about taking investment or attention away from other parts of the UK. It's about making sure the country is firing on all cylinders by unlocking the full potential of every region. "As a proud Liverpudlian, I'd certainly consider Andy Burnham a Scouser. His Merseyside roots give him a genuine understanding of Liverpool and the wider North West. Liverpool is known for producing people with humility, kindness and ambition, and those are qualities that matter in any leader - let alone the leader of the country. Tom McCallum liked thisTom McCallum liked thisWell, here we go….yet another leadership change is incoming……👀 #AndyBurnham steps into Downing Street with devolution at the centre of his political story and a promise to “rewire Britain”, shifting more power out of Whitehall and closer to places. It speaks to the heart of a leadership transition dilemma we all face. When you inherit leadership of something, is your instinct to start again, or to build on what is already in motion? There is a natural temptation, particularly when you have a new strategy to shape, to always create the new shiny programme, launch the new initiative and put your organisation at the centre of the narrative... But I do struggle with this, because if your “so what? goal” is to achieve true systemic change, I’m increasingly convinced that this “shiny new thing” mindset can be the wrong instinct. #SystemsThinking always requires you to understand your role in a much bigger picture. Where is momentum already building? Who is already leading? What is missing? And, most importantly, what can you bring that makes the whole system stronger? That question has been shaping how I’m thinking about the next chapter for Business in the Community. Across the UK, there are already communities, charities, civic leaders and governments working on the initiatives to drive social transformation… The opportunity for us is not necessarily to create another shiny initiative and ask everyone to join it. It has to be to understand what we are uniquely placed to do, which is to mobilise business as a collective force to come alongside major initiatives already in train. Our core belief is that business is the UK’s most underutilised force for social trans and so how can we most effectively bring business leaders, investment, capability, employment, supply chains and influence into key initiatives in a coordinated and sustainable way. And the collective action aspect is key. Our network brings individual businesses together to deliver at a scale none could achieve alone. One of the strongest themes in my conversations over the past four months has been how often business is still missing from place and community work, despite the appetite of businesses themselves to engage more deeply. That feels like a systemic failure worth solving. So perhaps one of the hardest disciplines of leadership is resisting the need to always be the headline…. Because if the goal is genuinely transformational impact, the question cannot always be … “What new thing can we launch ourselves?” Surely it has to be… “What is already moving, and how can we uniquely help deepen and scale that impact?”

But what if it demonstrates something more valuable: the ability to adapt as circumstances change without losing sight of a broader purpose? We celebrate that quality almost everywhere else. In business, leaders are expected to respond to changing markets. In science, we admire those who revise their conclusions when new evidence emerges. In football, managers are judged by their ability to change tactics as the game unfolds, something Thomas Tuchel is discovering in real time. Yet in politics, changing your mind is portrayed as weakness. Every adjustment becomes a "U-turn". Every shift in emphasis is treated as a betrayal. Tom McCallum liked thisTom McCallum liked thisBritain’s greatest opportunity isn’t just to grow its economy. It’s to rediscover CONFIDENCE in itself. Over the past few years we've had no shortage of strategies, reviews and policy announcements, and most of them have contained perfectly sensible ideas. Our real problem hasn't been a shortage of good thinking. It's been turning ambition into DELIVERY. So the next chapter needs to be defined by one thing: SPEED. Not rushed decisions — better decisions, made earlier. Businesses make investment choices every day, and they're not just comparing countries on tax, skills or infrastructure anymore. Increasingly it comes down to one question: who can move FASTEST, with confidence? Britain's strengths are real and they're substantial. World-leading universities. Global science and innovation. Creative industries that are admired everywhere. Financial and professional services still trusted internationally. Good entrepreneurs, good businesses, and talented people in every part of the country. We've never had a capability problem. We haven’t combined these STRENGTHS with enough pace, clarity and purpose. Growth isn't the point in itself — it's how we create opportunity. Better jobs. Higher living standards. Stronger public services. That means getting the fundamentals right: affordable energy, planning, AI, infrastructure, skills, competitive regulation, access to long-term capital. And it means stopping treating universities, science, housing and business as separate conversations, because together they're the foundation of national COMPETITIVENESS. Above all, Britain needs a more confident story about business. Business isn't simply where government collects tax — it creates opportunity, develops people, commercialises innovation, and funds the public services we all rely on. When RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS succeeds, Britain succeeds. This is a moment to think bigger and move faster, working across government, business, trade unions, universities and every region and nation. Britain has every ingredient it needs to be the best place in the world to invest, innovate, build and grow. The question isn't whether we have the capability. It's whether we have the LEADERSHIP — and the URGENCY — to use it. That's the real leadership test in front of us. Not finding a new destination, but having the will to reach the one we already know, faster, and TOGETHER.

Ben's company, Amitypath, is now creating and developing more and more ways to both expand walkabout around the world and also derive purposeful value from the power of the network to help solve gnarly, wicked and complex problems, the sort of…In Summer 2023 Ben Brabyn started the first Walkabout, which still runs every fourth Tuesday of each month at 5pm at Green Park. This was a time of much growth and maturation of the sport (our primary activity was youth and adult competitive swimming) in Cayman, during which we took every challenge as an opportunity.
By 2013 we had a national technical director and long term strategic plan in place, plus we had developed and built programmes that saw higher levels and numbers representing Cayman both as athletes…Board Member, Vice President and (ultimately) President of CIASA over the course of a decade.
This was a time of much growth and maturation of the sport (our primary activity was youth and adult competitive swimming) in Cayman, during which we took every challenge as an opportunity.
By 2013 we had a national technical director and long term strategic plan in place, plus we had developed and built programmes that saw higher levels and numbers representing Cayman both as athletes and as officials internationally, plus successfully developing a multi-club environment.
In the decade or so since, the sport has continued to develop, with many more athletes going on to college swimming (and scholarships), and with a key achievement being our first world champion in Jordan Crooks in 2022! -
