About us

What we do might surprise you! AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, social mission organization with a membership of nearly 38 million. Our aim is to disrupt outdated stereotypes about aging, turn goals and dreams into real possibilities, and fight for the issues that matter most to people 50-plus, their families and communities. Our social impact work in health security, financial resilience, and personal fulfillment is at the heart of what we do. With offices in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we live and work in the communities we serve. We listen to what people need and want, and offer programs, services and trusted information that are directly relevant to them. State offices also work with our national office to amplify our members’ voices at the local and federal levels to help empower people 50 and above to choose how they live and work as they age. From being a force for positive change to producing the nation’s largest-circulation magazine – the full scope of what we do might surprise you! That’s why people who are excited by unique opportunities and galvanized by meaningful challenges come to work at AARP.

Age bias can affect how workers are seen, supported and considered for opportunities. In our latest research, 64% of workers 50-plus say they have seen or experienced age discrimination at work. Recognizing the problem is an important step, but action matters too. Employers can help experienced workers and themselves by focusing on skills, opening learning opportunities to workers of all ages, and valuing the experience older workers can bring to multigenerational teams. Learn more about age discrimination and today’s job market at the link in the comments.

Your résumé should make it easy for employers to see why you’re a strong fit. A clear, simple format can help your most relevant skills and experience stand out quickly. Start with clear section headings so hiring managers can find what they need. Lead with skills that connect directly to the role you want. Keep formatting simple and easy to read, especially if your résumé may be reviewed by applicant tracking systems. Focus on recent experience and accomplishments that show what you can contribute now. You can also use AI to help refine your résumé. Try prompts like these: • “Review my résumé and suggest ways to make it easier for a hiring manager to scan.” • “Based on this job description, which skills from my résumé should I highlight near the top?” • “Rewrite this bullet to focus more clearly on accomplishments and impact.” • “Check my résumé for formatting issues that could make it harder for an applicant tracking system to read.”

Age discrimination affects people across every generation because aging is universal. That’s why building age-friendly workplaces matters for everyone, not just workers 50-plus. When employers recognize the value of experience, support workers at every career stage and create opportunities across generations, they help build stronger, more collaborative teams. Summer offers a chance to recharge. But it also has a way of exposing the realities many of us spend the rest of the year carefully managing. School schedules disappear. Caregiving responsibilities don't. Family logistics become more complex. Yet the demands of work remain the same.   As leaders, we should pay attention to what this season reveals.   As Americans live and work longer, one of our most important systems, the workplace, must continue evolving alongside the people it serves. Organizations that recognize this won't simply retain exceptional talent. They'll build stronger cultures, stronger teams, and be better prepared for the future of work. In the latest edition of “Aging, Transformed," I share why I believe summer offers an important leadership lesson, and why preparing for longer lives means rethinking the systems we rely on every day.   I'd love to hear how your organization is preparing for the changing workforce.

Think you know your workplace entertainment trivia? We put people from different generations to the test with questions about iconic shows, movies and songs about the workplace — from “9 to 5” to “Abbott Elementary” — and the results were both entertaining and revealing. While each generation brings different cultural references and experiences to the table, one thing is clear: diverse perspectives enrich conversations. That’s true in trivia, and in the workplace. When people of different ages work together, they bring unique strengths, fresh ideas and valuable experience that can help teams thrive.

🗣️ Say your name + current role: Start with who you are and the work you do. ⭐ Talk about your skills: Share what you do well and why you’re a strong hire. 💡 Share why you're perfect for the new job: Talk about why the work interests you. ⏱️ Keep it < 60 sec: Short and focused makes you more memorable. Practice it out loud a few times, so it feels natural when you say it. #elevatorpitch #shareyourskills #jobpitch #jobskills #jobapply

In 1776, the people shaping America’s future brought different experiences, ages and perspectives to the table. From young visionaries to mid-career leaders to elder statesmen, the nation’s founders remind us that bringing big ideas to life often requires multigenerational teamwork. Today, that lesson still applies in the workplace. Teams are stronger when people of all ages have the opportunity to contribute, collaborate and lead.
