For 15 years now I've suffered from anxiety and depression, I’m sharing my story publicly for a few reasons:
(1) If you're a manager, please realize how much you affect someone’s life
(2) If you suffer from mental health, you’re not alone, and you can do really amazing things!
(3) Thank those that have been and continue to be there for me
Here’s how it began...
▪ In 2008 I was ordered to take medical leave, I hadn’t slept in months. My roommates asked me to leave.
▪How did I get here…? At the time I was working A LOT. I was 26 and determined to get 26MWs of solar behind the meter. Months prior I had closed, at the time, what was the largest solar deal at a school district in the country - it was written up in the New York Times. Yes, I was too attached to my career and needed to put boundaries in place but that’s not all that got me there…
▪The night the board approved the contract, I went to celebrate with the client. A few drinks in, my client hit on me. I was devastated. It felt like he took my power away. Like I'd won the national championship only to have the ref tell me they called the game in our favor. I told my manager. He said, “not to worry - I don’t think it will happen again.”
▪3 weeks later the contract was officially signed, we had done the first deal of its kind. It was 7:30 pm, I was at my cubicle when the signature pages came through. I was elated. My boss came by and said, “Great job! Now, time to get the next one.”
▪A month later I was driving to a client event. Before I knew it, I was up against the median and another car was three lanes across the highway. My car was totaled. I called my boss to let him know. He said, “this never happened and don’t share it with anyone.” I got a ride to event. 2 wks later I got the exact same car and know one ever knew.
Thanks to my dear friend
Sydney Atkins 🙏 and a doctor's orders, I finally got the courage to take leave.
When I returned, 3 months later, everyone thought I'd taken vacation. How was your time? What did you do? If only they knew those were some of the most painful months of my life.
Thank you to all those who have been there for me through the ups and downs. I’m deeply grateful.
Here are my takeaways from my journey:
💡 I could have accomplished what I did without it taking such a toll on my mental health
💡 Who you work for matters. Managers, please take time to stop and appreciate your people. Ask how you can support them and flex how you show up as a result. Give credit where credit is due. Celebrate the wins
💡 Keep learning about yourself and honor your needs. I’ve learned I’m someone who will set bold goals at the cost of my own health. I can’t work for someone who takes advantage of that. My work wife
Lucy Georgiades is amazing ❤️
I founded Elevate to help managers be the kind of manager they would want to work for because who you work for is everything. I inherently think people are well intentioned and management is learned.
