Edith Harbaugh liked thisEdith Harbaugh liked this3 months into my tenure at LaunchDarkly I told my boss, “I’m glad I’m here, but I’m not having fun yet.” Org transformations aren’t fun. They are full of difficult conversations, challenging decisions, and lots of sleepless nights second-guessing everything you are doing. We didn’t get everything right, but we got enough right that 6 months later we started having fun. Reps were sharing feedback like: “I’ve learned so much, as well as made the most money in my life.” “I can’t imagine being part of another team - the culture is something I couldn’t leave.” The improved mood followed improved metrics. We doubled the average deal size, increased win rates, and sped up deal cycles. We did that by focusing on three skills: 1) Territory Management No process works if you spend time on the wrong accounts. When my parents landed first in the United States after years in refugee camps escaping the Vietnam War, they had to figure out how the heck the start their life and support their growing family with little. But they went to what they knew: a supportive network and community can help drive the best ideas and opportunities. That's how they started their gardening company. That's how they took a leap to start their chicken farm in rural Georgia. That's the same advice my parents gave me when I started my consultancy and they said the rest would follow. That advice led me to Microsoft. I'm so excited to join an extraordinary team led by Kia D. Floyd and Tyler Clark. Our goal wasn't simply to build another monitoring product - it was to help network operators transform telemetry into understanding. The organizations that rely on Kentik aren't just operating networks. They're building the digital infrastructure the world depends on. They connect people, power businesses, train AI models, move goods, deliver healthcare, and enable the services billions of people use every day. It has been an huge privilege to earn their trust. That early momentum only happened because so many people believed in us long before there was much evidence. Thanks to first cutomers and prototype partners Robert Bender at CTS/Metronet; Hank K., Aaron Weintraub, and Janine Malcolm at Cogent; Igor Gashinsky, Suparak Sasomsub, and others at Yahoo!, and to the thousands of successive champions who partnered with us as we grew. I'm deeply grateful to my co-founders: Justin Biegel, my partner in building and leading the company on the whole journey; Ian Pye, who rebuilt my original code into our first truly at-scale system and implemented all the // TODOs I'd left behind; and Ian Applegate, who convinced me to think bigger up front. I'm equally thankful to the hundreds of people who have built Kentik over the past twelve years, turning a nerdy idea into a scaled company. We're also fortunate to have had the support of friends, industry leaders, investors, advisors, and directors who believed in our vision and helped shape Kentik into the company it is today. NOW LIVE! Here are my biggest takeaways from Jeanne DeWitt Grosser (COO at Vercel) on how go-to-market actually scales: 1️⃣ Go-to-market should be treated like a product. Product teams prototype, storyboard, and obsess over user experience. Most GTM teams do none of that. But being sold to is an experience. If you don’t design it intentionally, you’re still creating one, just accidentally. 2️⃣ Sales motions fail because they’re rarely choreographed. The strongest GTM teams think in sequences. What experience tees up the next one? When should a whiteboard replace a deck? When does ROI come in? This is product thinking applied to human systems. 3️⃣ AI only helps after you decide what “good” looks like. Agents are most effective in deterministic environments. If you can’t articulate your best practices, AI will only scale inconsistency. Clarity first, automation second. 4️⃣ Most “lost on price” deals aren’t actually about price. When Jeanne dug into losses, the real issues were things like missing the economic buyer or failing to quantify ROI. Those are process bugs, not rep failures. Treating GTM like a product lets you debug those bugs systematically. 5️⃣ The forward deployed engineer exists because buyers are overwhelmed. Customers often know something needs to change but don’t know what to solve first. The people who win bring structure, frameworks, and pattern recognition into ambiguity. That consulting-oriented motion is becoming core, not optional. 6️⃣ Great sales reps aren’t going away in the AI era. If anything, trust and navigation matter more when decisions feel riskier. The best reps understand an organization’s decision-making better than the organization itself. AI may compress workflows, but judgment remains human. 7️⃣ “Early” is about trajectory (not headcount). Jeanne joined Google, Stripe, and Vercel later than most people think. What mattered wasn’t what number she was joining the company, but rather about the company’s growth trajectory. I’ve been talking with founders about how painful enterprise customization still is — even in 2025. David Dworsky and Gordon Ritter just put words to what we’ve been seeing: the age of point-and-click configuration is ending, and the next category winners will make customization conversational.
