    The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that has existed since 1955. High school students enter the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Of the roughly 1.5 million students who enter the competition each year, some 15,000 are chosen for this award based on a multiple hurdle selection system involving (1) high performance on the PSAT, (2) letters of recommendation from high school teachers and counselors. Of 15,000 chosen finalists, 7,500 will receive a scholarship, representing the top 0.5% of applicants to this award. My scholarship was awarded through Creighton University.
