With over 30 years of experience in the media industry, I am a podcast host and a media entrepreneur who is passionate about the future of work, leadership, and innovation. I have founded and led Menlo Creek Media, a company that helps leaders, marketers, and communications professionals navigate and leverage an AI-driven asynchronous world, by offering executive training for podcast hosts and guests, content creation and media library curation and amplification programs, and community development programs.
I also host two podcasts, Work 20XX and Turn the Lens, where I facilitate the spread of best practices, insights, learning, and wisdom on topics that matter to the modern workforce and society. I aim to be a trusted source of information and inspiration for my listeners, by featuring smart and diverse guests, engaging in lively and thoughtful conversations, and sharing nuggets of knowledge. I'm the consciously incompetent, probably wrong, roughly right CEO of WD-40 Company, and I need all the help I can get." People assumed I was being humble for effect. Most never realized it was the most strategic sentence I said all year. That line was not modesty. It was an operating system. When you are a senior leader, information gets filtered before it reaches you. People smile more. They challenge less. Reports get edited. Bad news arrives softer. Sometimes it never arrives at all. Nobody wants to be the person who hands the boss the hard truth. So the truth stops traveling. And you spend quarters making decisions based on a version of the company that does not actually exist. The introduction line was my structural fix. By naming my own incompetence first, in public, I changed the rules of the room. People watching me say "I am probably wrong and I need help" learned that being wrong and asking for help were now permissible behaviors. The signal traveled. The decisions got better because the information got better. Here is a diagnostic question I want you to sit with: Has anyone told you that you were wrong about something important in the last 30 days? If the honest answer is no, your team has not gone quiet on you. You went quiet on them. And now they are just responding to the vocabulary you gave them. The good news is you can start changing it in your next meeting. Try opening with something you do not know instead of something you do. Watch what happens.

I won't engage with the polarizing WFH v RTO debate, but will applaud the last sentence of the article. Because, as my wife the therapist likes to say: two things can be true. This is the last sentence: "To ensure that work remains a source of connection, we must change not only where we work, but how we work, so that our jobs continue to bring us together." If the authors of the article (or anyone else) posted that on LinkedIn, I'd drop dozens of hearts in the comments. Because it's the right way to think about this whole problem. I've been using versions of the attached slide for the past five years or so now, pointing out that we need to improve how we work AND the places we work. Too many companies over-index on the latter and ignore the former. Saying "we're hybrid now" does not sufficiently address the necessary changes to the way work gets done. For example, they will say, "Come back to the office because it improves your connections with other colleagues," but they will not actually measure social capital or connections in any way. You can build connection without being in the same place. You can build connection without communicating at the same time. You can be in the same place, but in a different place than the last time. This is how we should reimagine the dynamics of the workplace and stop trying to build a better yesterday. A few related articles in the comments.

Here's what it gave me: Slow mornings before my team woke up - including breakfast dates with Ted St.Dic. Deep focus work without the usual slack triage interruptions. Conversations with many Heads of Talent across Europe that may have been difficult to schedule otherwise. And yes, realistically shifting hours to take calls late into the night. And yet, every meeting, every decision, every connection with my colleagues, same as always. This is the quiet superpower of remote work: the ability to be present where you are, while staying connected to where you work. It doesn't dilute either. It deepens both. Grateful to work at Zapier, where this is just... how we work. What a privilege. P.S. — I also believe remote teams have the single biggest advantage when it comes to AI transformation. Tell the machine what you want to accomplish. The objective, the goal, the end state. For instance 'I want an app that alerts me 20 seconds before an Airplane shadow crosses my location so I can get ready for it. Let the machine figure out the tools, the data, and bring them all together to achieve your objective. Knowing how to code is helpful, but not necessary. Curiosity, and desire to learn, ask questions, explore paths, and define projects and objectives.... that's on your. Start with an objective. Most of us, especially kids, have already been dragged into endless scrolling on Instagram or Facebook. For hours and hours. This is the result of Meta's key features such as autoplay, highly-personnalised recommender systems and push notifications. Our investigation shows that Meta has not properly assessed the risks of its addictive design, nor put in place effective mitigation measures. 🚫 No effective screen time management tools. 🚫 No effective awareness raising measures. 🚫 No effective parental control. And Meta reaches almost 270 million users in the EU. Almost half of our children have an Instagram account at 12 - this is even below Meta's own terms and conditions! All of this has real-life consequences: children experience anxiety, depression and lack of sleep, to mention just a few. As you can see, we will hold online platforms accountable. A man is standing outside the fence wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses. He doesn’t need to do anything. According to WIRED’s analysis of Meta’s own code, the glasses are already running a system called “NameTag” — three AI models that detect faces, crop them, and encode them into biometric data. The system is already deployed to 50 million phones. It is not yet switched on. Meta says it hasn’t decided whether to activate it. They have also said that before. In 2021, they promised to delete over a billion faceprints. In 2024, they paid $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit in Texas for unlawfully collecting biometric data. The EFF calls it “a distributed surveillance machine.” Meta’s own former Reality Labs privacy official says: “I don’t know how Meta can responsibly deploy a technology like this.” Internal Meta documents, reviewed by the New York Times, show the company planned to roll this out during a “dynamic political environment” — when they believed their biggest critics would be distracted. That is not a company thinking carefully. That is a company waiting for the right moment. The people who approved building this into 50 million phones — by name: Mark Zuckerberg. Chair. CEO. Marc Andreessen. Board member. Has called concerns about tech harm “a luxury belief.” Dana White. Board member. Patrick Collison. Board member. Tony Xu. Board member. Tracey Travis. Board member. Robert Kimmitt. Board member. Former Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury. I have been raising this alarm since 2012, when I co-authored Wide Open Privacy and warned governments that facial recognition embedded in consumer devices would become the most dangerous surveillance tool ever handed to predators. I spent years advising governments and corporations on exactly this risk. Nobody acted. When this technology is used to identify a child, find their address, and follow them home — and a child is harmed — what exactly is the difference between that decision and child endangerment? We're trying to use AI to play the old game. In my new podcast episode, Thomas explains why disruptive innovation doesn't simply improve existing systems—it creates a different game altogether. Yet many schools, organisations, and leaders are using AI to make old ways of learning or working slightly more efficient rather than rethinking how learning, work and careers need to evolve. Thomas explores why established systems struggle to reinvent themselves and how disruptive innovation transforms industries over time. "Don't just look at what AI can do. Look at the incentives driving the companies building it." But, alongside that, I've also watched the conversation around remote and distributed work become increasingly polarized and driven more by long-held beliefs instead of data. That's why I'm excited to share that I've joined the inaugural Advisory Board of the The Remote Work Institute. In partnership with the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the Institute is bringing together researchers and practitioners to create a stronger evidence base for how remote work impacts employees, organizations, and communities. I believe we're entering a new chapter in how work gets done. AI will increasingly become our co-pilot, helping us collaborate, share knowledge, protect focus time, and execute with greater clarity. But for us at Dropbox, Virtual First was never about spending more time behind a screen. It was about designing work around outcomes instead of presence, and giving people the flexibility to do their best work. The future of work shouldn't be shaped by nostalgia or headlines. It should be driven by thoughtful experimentation, rigorous research, and a willingness to challenge assumptions about how great work happens. While there are abundant content-related steps that site owners can take in the hopes of getting their content used by AI, we are emphasizing that site owners start with good technical and structural readiness that will allow and encourage the agents to consume your info. Span of control is one of the fastest ways to unlock #costsynergies in M&A. It’s also one of the easiest ways to damage execution if handled crudely. On paper, the math is compelling: Done right, span-of-control optimization can unlock 5–15% of managerial payroll. But that number only materializes when leaders move beyond headcount cuts and focus on how management actually scales in the combined organization. This carousel highlights five distinct levers that sit behind span-of-control synergies: 👉 Reducing narrow spans that add limited value 👉 Eliminating duplicative oversight across legacy structures 👉 Compressing inflated mid-level layers 👉 Rebalancing workload to match real complexity 👉 Shifting toward more scalable leadership models The mistake I see repeatedly is treating these as cost actions. They are not. They are operating model decisions that require sequencing, role clarity, and leadership redesign. Span of control works when it’s engineered — not imposed. If cost synergies are part of your deal thesis, this is one lever that deserves far more discipline than it usually gets.
