Today, I understand that building a startup means building the company—and the ecosystem—around the product. One thing has become especially clear: Helping caregivers move from fragmented support to coordinated support across healthcare, employers, and community organizations requires more than technology. It requires partnership. Over the last 90 days, we've built meaningful momentum at EVRKind™ — The Caregiver Operating System™: ✅ Participated in three accelerator programs: BETA, Headwaters Institute, and Minnesota Cup ✅ Refined our story, business model, and investor pitch ✅ Advanced our rebrand (coming in Q3) ✅ Began major enhancements to our AI platform ✅ Expanded our fractional leadership team with expertise in caregiving, clinical research, AI, and social determinants of health ✅ Submitted 7+ accelerator, grant, and innovation applications—with more in progress ✅ Built relationships with caregivers, employers, healthcare organizations, nonprofits, policymakers, and industry leaders The biggest win wasn't the traction. It was the clarity. Every customer conversation, mentor meeting, accelerator, and application sharpened our thinking and challenged us to build a stronger company—not just a better product. That's also why we're intentionally building in Minnesota first. Minnesota's healthcare expertise, collaborative startup community, and willingness to work across sectors make it an incredible place to learn, partner, and build a model that can create lasting impact. One of the most encouraging moments came this past week. Conversations with leaders from a major healthcare organization—and welcoming new teammates with deep expertise in caregiving, clinical research, and social determinants of health—reinforced what we've been hearing more and more: The need is real. The timing is right. Our solution in caregiving matters and is truly innovative. We're still early in the journey. But today, I measure progress differently. Not by how much we've built. By how much we've learned. By how much closer we've grown to the people we serve. And by how much stronger the foundation has become. None of this would be possible without our incredible team, generous mentors, accelerator leaders, advisors, and Minnesota's startup and healthcare communities. As someone with 14 years of experience in market strategy, market intelligence, consumer insights, and customer experience—along with being a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt for one of the largest health care organizations—I appreciate a good statistic. Visualizing data brings the problem to life: - 1 in 5 Minnesota adults provides care to a family member or friend with complex needs. - 1 in 3 caregivers face financial harm, draining savings or taking on new debt. - 62% of working caregivers earn hourly wages, meaning missed care results in missed pay. - 1 in 4 caregivers cannot find affordable local help for meals, rides, or in-home care. - Only 11% have ever been asked by a health care provider about their own needs. (Source: AARP Policy, Research, and Thought Leadership, Caregiving in the US 2025 — Minnesota) The last statistic is particularly striking. Caregivers are often overlooked in clinics, workplaces, and neighborhoods, yet few are inquiring about their well-being. This raises an important question: How can we, as Minnesotans, collaborate to alleviate caregiver burden? When my dad nearly died, I still couldn't manage everything that came next — in my first language, with every advantage. Now imagine doing it in your second language. That's the reality for thousands of caregivers in Minnesota's Somali and Hmong communities — the largest Somali community in the country, and one of the largest Hmong communities anywhere. Writing the family update text at midnight. Packing for a parent's rehab stay. Trying to make sense of Medicare rules written for no one who actually reads them. Kathleen Hustad shared thisWhat I’ll remember most from yesterday’s BETA Startup Showcase wasn’t receiving 3rd Place—it was the conversations. We asked visitors one simple question: 💬 “What’s the hardest part of caregiving?” The answers were deeply personal, but clear themes quickly emerged: financial burden, stress, uncertainty, isolation, and simply not knowing what to do next. Every story reinforced why we’re building EVRKind™ — The Caregiver Operating System. We were honored to receive 3rd Place, but the greatest validation came from the people we hope to serve. One of the highlights of the evening was the depth of the conversations with investors, founders, and ecosystem leaders, and community partners. People didn’t just ask what EVRKind does—they wanted to understand why we’ve made certain strategic decisions and where we’re headed. Those thoughtful discussions reinforced that we’re building something people believe can make a meaningful difference. Events like this remind me that great startups aren’t built by having all the answers—they’re built by listening, learning, and continuously refining alongside the people you’re serving. I also appreciated the opportunity to connect caregivers with organizations and resources that can help today. Supporting family caregivers isn’t something one organization can solve alone—it takes an entire ecosystem working together. A special thank you to my son for spending the evening helping at our booth. Sharing this journey together made the experience even more meaningful. Nearly 25 million women in this country are behind on their cervical cancer screening, or have never been screened at all. Not because they do not care, but because getting to a clinic is hard: work, childcare, transportation, or simply not having a regular doctor. Cervical cancer is almost always preventable when it is caught early. So the real question is not only "is there a test?" It is "how do we get women to actually complete it?" That is what we built at SNT Biotech. We partner with health plans to bring screening into the home, and then we do the hard part: the outreach, reminders, and support, in a member's own language, that turn a kit on the kitchen counter into a completed test, processed in our own CLIA lab, with results sent back to members and their primary care providers. The test is only half the story. Completion is the other half. That is our focus. The two organizations recently released the largest national #FoodAsMedicine evaluation of food bank and health care partnerships, which included screening more than 1.45 million patients for #FoodInsecurity and connecting more than 161,000 households to nutritious food and whole-person care. Feeding America’s Food as Medicine 3.0 (FAM3) initiative, funded through a $14.1 million grant by the Foundation, also found that consistent access to nutritious food reduces self-reported hospitalizations by 14% and emergency department visits by 11%, and strengthens food security among people facing hunger. The FAM3 report is just one powerful example of how Elevance Health Foundation and the Feeding America network is driving meaningful results at scale through community-rooted partnerships that are adaptable, replicable and centered on the needs of individuals. Yet only 11% of employers offer support services for older adults and access to paid family leave still remains elusive at the national level. I talked with Jillian Berman at MarketWatch for a piece on what happens when workplaces aren't built for the millions of employees caring for aging or sick parents, spouses, and loved ones. As I told MarketWatch, in an ideal world we'd see employers systematically assessing whether their employees have caregiving responsibilities — and designing benefits around that reality. We know that's not happening across the board. I was also happy to see National Alliance for Caregiving partner and member EMD Serono, Inc. highlighted for their efforts to create a culture of care for its employees — from nine weeks of annual caregiver leave to manager training and care navigation support. This is what stepping up looks like. As our research shows, the stakes are real: working caregivers are arriving late, leaving early, draining savings, and too often leaving the workforce entirely. And the workers with the least financial cushion are the least likely to have access to benefits and protections. With the oldest boomers turning 80, this is no longer a niche issue. It's a workforce issue, a retention issue, and an economic issue. Employers who follow EMD Serono's lead — with flexibility, paid leave, and caregiving support services — will keep their talent.
