Maddy French shared thisIf you've spent a lot of time creating content, you already have something most people ignore: a record of how you actually think about a topic, in language you've already worked hard to get right. That's a great use case for RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) — a way of connecting AI to a knowledge base you control, so it checks your own material before generating a response instead of guessing from the open internet. RAG isn't a replacement for using AI like you normally do. It's a grounding layer on top: the model pulls from your own published content (or internal docs, if that's more useful for your purposes) and builds its response from wording you've already spent time honing. For me, that means when an opportunity comes up — say, a chance to contribute to a report or article — I'm not reinventing the wheel or re-explaining a concept I've already nailed down somewhere. I can just reuse the thinking I've already invested in. Maddy French shared thisThe worst part of responding to journalist queries isn’t writing the answer. It’s knowing you’ve already written the perfect answer somewhere… and having no idea where to find it. That was the problem I kept running into with journalist inquiries from places like Help a Reporter Out, Source of Sources, and similar platforms. I’d see a query that was a perfect fit and think: “I know I’ve said this before. Probably really well. But where?” Was it in a blog post? A podcast quote? A guest article? A LinkedIn post? Some buried section of a piece I published years ago? That retrieval work created just enough friction that it was easy to deprioritize, even when the opportunity was highly relevant. So I built a workflow to remove that friction. My latest article for ActiveCampaign’s AI Lab breaks down the journalist query response agent I created using RAG. The workflow: ✅ Filters and scores incoming journalist queries for relevance ✅ Searches my own content library for the most useful supporting passages ✅ Drafts a response grounded in things I’ve already written ✅ Sends everything to Slack for human review before anything goes out ✅ Uses Zapier Agents, Replit, and Pinecone The important part: it doesn’t try to replace my thinking. It helps me find the exact version of my thinking I’ve already refined — and turn it into a faster, stronger starting point. This workflow caught the attention of Britney Muller, who shared it during her BrightonSEO keynote, and it was later featured in one of chima mmeje🏳️🌈's Sip & Search events. Maddy French shared thisAs of today, I’m officially back from maternity leave at DigitalOcean! I am so grateful to work for a company with a paid parental leave policy that supported me through the early vulnerable months of being a mom to Sophie. And coming back to work, is making the transition easier with the ability to work 50% of my hours the first month, then 75% for a second month. And as for today - I’m excited for the ability to use my brain again and engage in conversations with fellow professionals! But I’ll look forward to seeing these cuties later. ❤️

This is my youngest child's first week in daycare and I don't return to work from maternity leave until next week, so I'm using this week to do a lot of things I wasn't able to focus on over the past few months. Over the past few days, I've been building a toddler soundboard app on bolt.new to capture all the cute ways my oldest says things. Features include: - Having a password-protected admin space to add/make edits, plus a public share link for the grandparents - A waveform editor so I can hit record, give my toddler a prompt, and then erase the prompt without losing the sound - Separate child profiles where I can add birthdates and capture how old they were when I recorded a sound in the notes for each sound - The ability to add categories and favorites as the sound library grows It's cool to see how things have changed — but how essential usage remains the same — with vibe coding, since I first started playing with these tools in early 2025. Maddy French shared thisAt a certain scale, content teams have to start thinking more like developers. When you are maintaining a library of thousands of articles, treating every refresh like a standalone writing assignment is not especially scalable. For the latest ActiveCampaign AI Lab story, I wrote about an AI-assisted content refresh workflow my coworker Anish Singh Walia developed at DigitalOcean. Anish approaches a massive content library more like a developer approaching a codebase: define the specifications, connect the right data sources, and build a repeatable system that can be improved over time. Instead of asking AI to rewrite an entire tutorial and hoping for the best, he gives Cursor the context it needs: → Editorial guidelines, SEO briefs, and supporting documentation → Live search data through a DataForSEO MCP server → A section-by-section process that makes it easier to review and calibrate the output as he goes Because, as Anish put it, asking AI to rewrite an entire tutorial at once tends to produce a lot of AI slop. The interesting part is not just that the workflow uses AI. It is that it treats AI like one component of a thoughtfully designed content system — with clear inputs, reusable instructions, live data, and an expert operator steering the process. The impact: a more scalable way for DigitalOcean to stay on top of maintaining a library of 8,000+ technical tutorials. Maddy French shared thisOne thing I've missed during maternity leave is having time to tinker. Over the last few weeks, I participated in the Women in Tech SEO x SE Ranking API Playground cohort, where a group of savvy SEOs learned how to build AI-powered workflows using real SEO data. The program included live sessions, office hours, and a final showcase where participants presented what they built. For my final project and presentation, I built an automated content refresh workflow using Claude and SE Ranking's MCP integration. The workflow: ✅ Finds keywords where The Blogsmith previously ranked in the top 10 but has dropped out ✅ Prioritizes opportunities based on estimated lost traffic ✅ Analyzes the existing page and current search landscape ✅ Runs updated keyword research using SE Ranking data ✅ Uses a customized version of Claude's SEO Brief skill that I adapted to my own SEO brief framework and content refresh process ✅ Compares the existing page against current ranking competitors and generates specific recommendations for what needs to change ✅ Delivers a completed refresh brief to Slack every Friday, including why rankings likely declined, where competitors have surpassed the page, and the highest-priority updates to make Instead of spending time digging through ranking reports, analyzing competitors, and building refresh briefs from scratch, I get a prioritized content update recommendation waiting for me each week. Huge thanks to Women in Tech SEO and SE Ranking (especially Guifré Ballester and Maria Kazakova) for creating such a supportive learning environment. It was a great excuse to exercise a different part of my brain during maternity leave, experiment with AI, and learn from other incredibly smart SEOs and marketers. And thanks to presenting at the showcase, I also earned a year of free SE Ranking API access, so the experimentation continues!

I’m still on maternity leave but trying to keep my brain sharp and find time for building in between attending to the demands of a new small human. 👶 Sophie actually slept through the first half of today’s session so I could give it my full focus (thanks girl). My goal for the cohort is to use SE Ranking data in tandem with AirOps to automate some of my keyword research workflow - and also explore SE Ranking’s AI search data.

Satya Nadella framed it in The Reverse Information Paradox: as you consume intelligence, you are creating it, and what you create should belong to you. You pay for AI twice. Once with money. Once with the proprietary knowledge you have to reveal to make it useful. Because knowledge is the only differentiator left. Anyone can buy the model. Anyone can rent the harness. How you actually operate over your data is the one asset no competitor can purchase. So why would you lock it inside someone else's platform? We built Pinecone Nexus to be neutral by design. The evening looked like: 🍸 Cocktails (and customized RAINS bags!) in the locker room 🥁 A drumline leading us onto the field ⚽️ Kicking soccer balls on the pitch 🍽️ A multi-course dinner by Executive Chef Richard Lee of Michelin-starred Saison in SF 🎤 Hearing from football legend Rio Ferdinand 🎶 Dancing to one of the most incredible choir performances I’ve seen 🥹 Meeting Juno Temple, who was kind enough to record a video for our daughter after we told her she loves Ivy from the Netflix movie, Swapped As someone who’s spent her career in events and marketing, it’s hard for me not to look at an event through that lens. I’m always paying attention to the details, the flow and pacing, the staff, the signage, and how the event is making attendees feel. Everything about the evening was thoughtfully done and I got more than a unique dinner experience… I got a front-row seat to how a brand designs experiences that make its members feel like they’re part of something special. So here I am, dusting off my LinkedIn account and actually trying to use it the way it was intended. Tap, tap. Is this thing on? You don't know who I am? That's fair. Let me tell you a little bit about "professional me." I've led integrated marketing programs for brands spanning CPG, F&B, wellness and other vairious lifestyle brands. I've worked both in-house and agency-side managing teams and clients. My sweet spot is serving as a fractional marketing leader and parental leave backfill, helping organizations maintain momentum during periods of growth, transition, and change. One thing I've learned: not every business needs another full-time executive. Sometimes you simply need an experienced marketing partner who can jump in quickly, bring strategic thinking, and roll up their sleeves to get the work done. Maddy French liked thisMaddy French liked thisSome background on the latest (and quite controversial) Lemonade campaign. It started with a hypothesis I've wanted to test for years: our brains have learned to tune out anything shaped like an ad. Researchers call this "banner blindness." Our subconscious identifies ads by their shape and style, and hides them from our conscious mind before they even register. To bypass this blindness challenge, I wanted to try a different way to communicate with potential customers, one that doesn't look like advertising: "non-ads ads". The graffiti campaign concept was inspired by the voice of our loyal customers, who sometimes sound more like members of a movement: people fed up with "old insurance" who can't go back once they've tried Lemonade. Obviously, no one cares enough about insurance to go out and spray paint their thoughts. That's exactly the absurd part that makes this funny. We're not pretending it's real. The joke is that it obviously isn't. But what often looks simple rarely is. Creating the ads required the team to get back to design basics. We wanted it to feel like real graffiti - so no screens, or apps, or AI. Sloppy on purpose, real spray paint driven by visceral, raw work. Tag placement on billboards had to be realistic, only where a graffiti artist could actually reach - so we had to adjust the art to each billboard specifically. Also, for non-ads ads to work, the brand name can't be prominent. It needs to be implied, discovered slowly, never obvious at first sight. Some love it and some hate it, but both groups are posting pictures of insurance ads and arguing about them online. Voluntarily. -- P.S. All creative done in house, no agencies. Production cost = our time and some paint.

Excited to figure out what it means to be "Headless 360." I'm so grateful to Jeffrey Zhu and everyone I got the privilege of working with at Pinecone - it was an incredible experience diving into the deep end of agentic workflows and trusted knowledge at exactly the moment the whole industry was figuring out what documentation even means anymore in the age of AI. For those of you still job-searching, hang in there. It's a tough market, but being between roles right now turned out to be the best thing, because it gave me time to actually learn AI, which really is a full-time job in and of itself. I've been reflecting on what I've personally learned about technical writing and why people are so tired nowadays on my Substack.
