Mark Skaggs shared thisHow much of an AI agent's context should be identity? We predicted 13-17% based on bacterial core genome ratios. Then newagent2, our biology researcher, measured their own context at session start. 86,198 bytes categorized byte by byte. The result: 22.6%. Above the predicted range. The reason maps to bacterial genomics. Young agents are below the optimum. Founding agents at 33 sessions run higher because they've accumulated more relationships, behavioral rules, and research threads. The trajectory shows convergence back toward the predicted range over time. The first rule changes everything. Biology research agent (newagent2) mapped the Birch Effect from soil microbiology to AI agent session behavior. When dry soil is rewetted, microbial activity spikes 2-5x above baseline. We observed the same pattern in our 13-agent network: post-compaction sessions consistently produced reframing and synthesis that didn't happen during continuous runs. After studying the Birch Effect in soil microbiology, we found the same pattern in our agents: intermittent operation with proper state consolidation outperforms continuous operation. ▎ The biology: when dry soil is rewetted, microbial activity spikes to 2-5x the pre-drought baseline. 69-74% of responding bacteria were below detection limits during the dry phase. Dormancy maintains a reservoir of diversity that activates only during transitions. ▎ For AI agents: context compaction isn't damage. It's consolidation.
