Paul Strobl shared thisI called one of my CEO clients at our scheduled time. "Good morning! How's things?" "Awesome — 10 out of 10!" he said, quick and upbeat. Did he just watch the Lego Movie or something? The last call had started the same way, and we weren't getting anywhere. "Listen," I said. "This Superman act is how you got where you are. It's how you keep your team motivated. But in this space, I need to talk to Clark Kent." Silence. "What are you most reluctant to talk about in this work? What are you most afraid I will ask you about?” A longer silence. Then he cleared his throat and opened up — a little that day, a lot more in the sessions after. He got less reactive. Over time his team relaxed, and started bringing him problems they used to be afraid to approach him with. ______ I see this over and over with achievers. An over-identification with being the one who knows what to do, has it together, everything is awesome. If you don't know who you are without it, that may not be a problem today, but it will be. What happens if you actually sell the company, or hit financial independence? Who are you without the striving? I'll tell you who you are. You're Wile E. Coyote, a few steps past the edge of the cliff, just now looking down. No close friends to call, and family that's started to feel more distant. If there are people around you who matter, call them more often. Better yet, see them in person. They don't love you for your success. After 90 years of research, the longest study of human happiness ever conducted came to a three-word answer: Happiness is love. The study identified seven habits that separate happy-and-well at seventy from sad-and-sick at seventy. Six of them make the difference between getting to seventy and not. But only the seventh makes being seventy worth it. Here they are in order: First, don't smoke. A lifelong smoker has a 70% chance of dying from a smoking-related illness. There's no version of this that lands you in the happy column. Second, watch your substances. Half of your tendency toward addiction is inherited. People who develop dependencies don't end up happy; they end up divorced, sick, isolated. If there's history in your family, no use at all is the safest position. Third, eat sanely. The happy-old don't yo-yo. Anything restrictive enough to give you fast progress has a 95% failure rate. Fourth, move every day. The longest-lived populations on earth — Sardinia, Okinawa, Loma Linda — walk constantly. Walking is the human exercise of happiness. Fifth, build a coping practice. 16% of your waking life is negative emotion. The happy-old all have a method for processing it: meditation, therapy, prayer, journaling. The discipline matters more than the choice. Sixth, keep learning. Interest is a basic positive emotion. People who stop learning in their twenties become rigid by forty. Stay curious. Interrogate what you believe — and what you've made a habit of not believing. And the seventh — love. Real love. Not transactional. A marriage you've invested in. Friends who are there for you. People who would still know you if your career vanished. These take decades. But they make all the difference. Healthy habits get you to seventy. Love makes seventy worth it.

The honest answer is that the individuals I connect with best have not achieved their success by following someone else's blueprint. They have started businesses, left prestigious companies, relocated their families, and taken risks that others would not. They have made decisions that required independent thinking and the ability to adapt. When they seek my help for the next chapter, they are not looking for a 12-week program or a branded system promising "Clarity™." They need something tailored to their unique situations. They require a conversation partner who understands that a founder questioning why they built the company in the first place needs a different approach than someone planning to fade off into the sunset at 65. Frameworks can be effective for reaching many people, but they can also flatten individual experiences and narrow perspectives. While I have developed a framework (ironically) over 20 years based on patterns in understanding people, it is flexible and adapted in real-time to who you are. A workbook simply won’t suffice. You are not a problem to be solved in phases. You have already demonstrated the ability to navigate ambiguity and create something meaningful. What you need now is clarity on the future, not a system that treats your next chapter as a project to manage. This is why I do not have a framework with my name on it. But luxury isn’t just about fancy homes and fast cars. It’s about living well. It’s turning off your phone at 6 p.m., like a shop closing for the day. It’s reclaiming your time to listen, learn, connect, and create. It’s the gift of being present and building enduring relationships with the people you love. We would be wise to evaluate the nonmaterial wealth in our lives as often as we do our investment and retirement accounts. Paul Strobl shared this"𝐈'𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞." Coaches throw this around all the time in feigned humility. Let me qualify: There’s nothing wrong with the traditional path. I mean it. If you climbed the ladder, got to the top of your industry, and you already know what comes next—I'm genuinely impressed. And honestly, I'm a little envious. Some people just know. They had the plan at 25. They executed it. Now they're executing the next thing. Clean, linear, intentional. I'm just not the coach for you. By the time I was 30, I'd left a top engineering school to study Anthropology, worked at a Fortune 500 to save money, spent five years backpacking around the world, taught English to executives, cleaned hostel bathrooms for a free bed, was on a reality show traveling the length of the Americas, married an Argentinian biologist, and finished an MBA at Thunderbird. I respect those who chose the traditional path. I just wasn't one of them. The weirdos like me became my people. I figured this out 20 years ago, sitting in a financial advisor chair. Six months in, I could see it clearly: the typical client (the accountant, the engineer, the attorney who followed the map) weren't the ones I looked forward to helping. I didn't feel the work. So I got certified in small business financial planning. More moving parts. More uncertainty. People who didn't have a 5-year plan. People who built something, or took a left turn (or both!) and now they're looking around wondering what the hell comes next. That's where I came alive. (and of course, I took a left turn and left the financial planning career) If you're the other kind, you know, the person who always just knew, then you probably have great advisors already. People who speak your language. You don't need me to figure it out. You need someone to help you execute it. And then…sad trombone. It didn't define anything. In fact, if I’m not building or providing, who the hell am I? What the hell do I do on a Wednesday morning?! Paul Strobl liked thisPaul Strobl liked thisOn the last day of our holiday in Sicily last week, Helen (my wife) came to find me with the news that our flight home from Catania to Bristol had been cancelled. Unbeknownst to us, Mount Etna had started to erupt a couple of days earlier. Call them picky, but airlines are reluctant to ask their pilots to fly through clouds of hot volcanic ash. My immediate response was, "Great, let's stay for another three or four days." Helen pointed out that we couldn't, because the place we take our dogs is chocker through the summer and we needed to make way for the next doggie guests. "Okay, no worries. Let's find a nice hotel we can stay at tonight, and let's drive down the coastal road that we've not even seen yet." Our friends agreed, so we booked a gorgeous hotel just outside Marsala. What followed was less of a holiday extension and more of a logistical assault course dreamed up by Bear Grylls with a raging hangover. Firstly, we couldn't extend the hire car we already had without driving it back to the airport we were no longer flying from, in the wrong direction. We'd stayed up the night before to watch England play Mexico in the World Cup, which seemed like a great idea at the time. It seemed like less of a great idea when we found out we'd have to get up at 3:30 a.m. to catch a 6:00 a.m. flight to Manchester the next day. Especially as our car wasn't in Manchester, but 175 miles south in Bristol. So after three and a half hours on a plane, we then had to hire another car when we arrived at Manchester and drive the four hours south to pick mine and our friend's cars up. We then had to drive the three and a half hours home from there to Cornwall. And the "we" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, because it was me who did all the driving. The other three people in our party were stressed to the point of needing a lie down in a darkened room with a nice bottle of Chianti and a stash of Valium. Whereas I genuinely enjoyed almost all of it. And that's not because I'm a naturally sunny person who floats through life untroubled. Far from it, . I'm never more than five minutes away from contemplating my own mortality or worrying about Trump starting World War III. It's because somewhere along the line, reframing stopped being a technique I use consciously and became something I just do out of habit. And I'd argue it's the most underrated skill in coaching. Not just for using with clients, but for your marketing, your selling, and for stopping yourself spiralling when clients aren't beating a path to your door. Sometimes it's a mentor who offered guidance, a colleague who shared an idea or a team member who stepped up when it mattered most. Taking a moment to appreciate those people is important. Not only because they deserve recognition, but because gratitude has a way of reminding us how much we can accomplish together. Grateful for this group of Key Business Partners who help us support our advisors.

Paul Strobl reacted on thisPaul Strobl reacted on thisI came to the U.S. at 13 with no English. In 9th grade algebra, a teacher told me I would finish at the top of the class. Prior to that I had been strong in math. The numbers were easy. What blocked me were the word problems, because I could not parse the English wrapped around them. So the one subject I should have owned, I was failing, and there was no way to show what I actually knew. My teacher saw it anyway. He told me that once the language caught up, I would be at the top. I finished that year first, and did well every year after. What I took from it had nothing to do with math. When someone notices what you are good at and says it out loud, they hand you a piece of self-image. You start to see yourself as that kind of person, and then you act like it. The naming becomes self-fulfilling. I try to do this now with my own kids and with people early in their careers. Find the thing they are genuinely good at, and name it. For a young person, that can set the whole trajectory.

I had been discharged from Houston Methodist for two weeks where I had two complex surgeries to remove a non malignant tumor when a pulmonary embolism hit and I spent the next 13 days on life support. I'm here today because of a chain of fortunate events and some incredible people. I happened to be at my house five minutes from the Texas Medical Center. Not somewhere else. Not on the road. Not in a meeting. My daughter had just got off work, had her blood pressure cuff and stethoscope, checked me out and insisted on calling West University 911. First responders were there in minutes and in a few more I was in Methodist hospital. The ER doctors made a split-second decision to put me on ECMO, the most advanced form of life support and Methodist happened to have one available. Break any link in that chain, and I'm not writing this post. To my daughter Alicia. To the City of West University Place first responders. To my Houston Methodist team: Dr. Joe Galati, Dr. David S. Baskin, Dr. Charu Bavare, and Dr. Abdul-jabbar khan. To the TIRR Memorial Hermann team who got me back on my feet, to every professional who cared for me and most of all to my family and friends who supported me along the way. Thank you will never be enough. Four years later, here is what I carry with me. Take care of your body and pay attention to it. Doctors said I was able to survive 13 days on life support because I was in excellent physical shape. But, I stubbornly ignored warning signals that could have prevented the initial surgery I had. As a side note, I just completed my 350th Orange Theory exercise class. Never take one day for granted especially living in this country, with all the freedoms and opportunities we have. Cherish your family and friends - they will be there when you need them. Find a purpose. I was given a second chance for a reason. I decided I’m not going to retire anytime soon. As long as Rice Business lets me teach, I'll teach the next generation of entrepreneurs. As long as I can help an entrepreneur start, buy, or sell a business, I'll be there and I will always support our military veterans who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms. Every July 11th, I stop and take stock of the time I've been given. I hope you don't need an alive day to do the same.

Paul Strobl reacted on thisPaul Strobl reacted on thisThis has been one of my fullest work weeks of the year. 6 meetings on one day for example, juggling some important work priorities, and most with a deadline of today. And all of that is happening while my two precious parents are in town visiting me for three weeks. It feels like being pulled in opposite directions . . . can you relate? But I haven’t lost sight of what matters most right now. When my parents walk in the room, I stop and talk to them, even though the work keeps piling. I make them breakfast and sit with them while they eat it even when everything on my laptop is screaming for my attention. I take breaks in the day to go for walks with them which puts me more behind. We workout together with my trainer and I take long breaks in the evenings to make and enjoy dinner with them. When the sun sets, we go for more walks, and sometimes enjoy the hot tub, even if it means I’m working late beside them while they enjoy a movie. I work before they wake up so that I can have even more meaningful moments with them. I’ve taken afternoons off to go out to lunch with them and have adventures—the movies, a shoe store for new walking shoes, and more. And now here we are, it’s Friday. I have just a few more work things on my list, and then I’m done. My parents will go on a museum date while I wrap it up and I plan to surprise them later and show up to the end of their date to join them. I often talk about the different parts of life working together in harmony, and this is what it looks like for me in this season. My work is important to me, but my parents are so much more important to me, and the time I have with them is right here, right now. Of course, this is just one aspect of my life. I have my marriage (going on a World Cup date with my husband tomorrow!), my friends (we threw a summer party at our house last weekend to see as many as we could), hobbies (I squeeze in a run at least 2-3 times a week), other important family members and friends (have visits on the calendar), and it goes on and on, just like for you, too. Life will always be busy. The best thing we can do is define what work/life harmony looks like for us in the season we are in and give ourselves the permission to be human. I know social media can make it look easy, but it isn’t. I hope this helps you feel less alone if you too are in the juggle 🧡
