AI is making most marketing teams lazy. I see it every week. Not because AI is bad. Because it’s too easy to hide behind. Someone types a request. Good copy comes back. Nobody checks it. It goes live. A few weeks later, results are bad and no one knows why — because no one really thought about it. AI did. Here’s my rule: AI can help me write. It can’t help me think. What I let AI do: → Write first drafts of ad copy → Sum up data fast → Turn one post into five What I never let it do: → Decide who we’re talking to → Decide what will actually work in this market → Understand what a client really needs (not just what they said) The people winning right now aren’t the ones using AI the most. Most founders are the search engine of their own company. I learned this building the AI that runs mine — the model was never the problem. I run Helix on AI employees. YouGov published research this week: AI is changing how people discover businesses online. Most marketers read that and think: we need more content. Here is what actually works. AI doesn't recommend the business with the most content. It recommends the business it can verify. Clear entity data. Consistent name, address, and category signals. Structured information a machine can parse without guessing. One edit that moves the needle: make sure your Google Business Profile, your website, and every directory listing say exactly the same thing. Word for word. No variations. That consistency is what tells an AI model: this business is real and trustworthy. Content volume is not the answer. Clarity is. Understand. Trust. Recommend.

I typed my own company into an AI tool last week. It told me we can't do something we've done for years. Confident. Specific. Dead wrong. So I checked its sources. Where was it getting this? Turns out the content traced back to comparison pages and "best tools" lists 99% of which were written by competitive solutions. Unsurprisingly: they'd described our capabilities wrong. Things we do every day, listed as things we can't do. Here's the game. There’s a whole genre of content that exists purely to feed search systems (Google, AI, etc) : "Top 10 tools," "alternatives to X," head-to-head comparison pages. These aren’t really to inform a buyer. They want to get picked up by an AI system or search engine. I’m not hating the player, but this is the game. I'm the VP of Sales at VT, I know the product well, so it was easy for me to catch it. Buyers researching a tool they've never touched won't have a clue. What’s the point? Before you trust AI on any tool, check who wrote the page it's sourcing. If it's on a competitor's site, it's a sales pitch in a lab coat. Try it on a product you know super well this week. Am I an idiot? I couldn't figure it out. Everyone's reels and shorts were blowing up. I was doing the work... mine just sat there. If you're posting consistently and it's still not landing, read this: You're probably blaming the wrong thing... the tool, the algorithm, or how you "prompt" the AI. Here's what finally flipped it for me: it's not HOW you use AI. It's what you're not giving it. Generic in, generic out. Hand AI a blank brief and it hands you content that sounds like everyone else's. Feed it the real stuff — your customer's exact pain, how you actually solve it, what makes your angle different and the ideas stop sounding generic and start sounding like you. A clever prompt on top of a vague brief is still vague. The prompt was never your bottleneck. Your inputs were. So stop hunting for a better prompt. Give AI better inputs. The pain, the solution, your unfair advantage and let it hand you the angles. Same tool. Same you. Completely different output.
