Recent world events have underscored a simple truth: mobility is power. From the war in Ukraine and conflicts across the Middle East, to natural disasters disrupting global supply chains, we’ve seen how uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) have become indispensable for reconnaissance, and rapid response. Reconnaissance and offensive FPV drones have transformed modern warfare, enabling real-time intelligence and swift tactical action. But when it comes to logistics, UAS have played a far smaller role. Today, most UAS resupply operations in contested environments are limited to delivering small payloads: a handful of meals or supplies for small units at best. The real challenge lies in scaling that capability: moving hundreds of pounds of equipment, medical devices, water tanks, inflatable rescue boats, or even autonomous ground robots. This can unlock the potential of “continuity” rather than “survivability” for landlocked groups. Almost all VTOL-capable drones today are constrained to payloads under 100 pounds and ranges under 10 miles. While this can be relevant for specific tactical events, it lacks the broad “cavalry” needed to sustain larger groups needing to rely on remote resupply. If we compare this to civil logistics, then we can see that most UAS, while relevant to last mile logistics, are not capable of bridging the gap between logistics hubs and remote end points due to both range and payload constraints. One of the reasons the electric quadcopter design revolutionized consumer and industrial applications is its simplicity and affordability. Decision makers will soon face a choice: acquire one heavy-lift UAS such as the Black Hawk, or 20-30 smaller, medium-lift, medium-range logistics eVTOLs operating collaboratively. There’s no question that some missions require the helicopter, but in most cases, the latter can satisfy the mission and provide many tactical advantages and availability to the end user. Commanders will no longer need to send out a blackhawk with two crewmembers onboard to deliver a 200lb tool for ship repairs during ship to ship or ship to shore operations. If the future of aerial logistics depends on costly, complex systems, we’ll miss the true opportunity: to fundamentally change how things move: safely, quickly, and economically. UAVs in a motorized infantry battalion - a detailed analysis of the role of drones In this article we will try to scrutinize and understand what role UAVs play in an infantry battalion, what tasks they perform and how much will increase the effectiveness of command, combat and other operations. Front line Control in Defense The main task of UAVs in infantry battalions in Ukraine. UAVs have proven to be an ideal tool for this task. Steppe, flat as a board terrain, large open spaces allow a drone like Mavic or Autel to see the movements of people and equipment at a depth of several kilometers. It is this factor that actually destroyed the effect of the "fog of war". In the current fighting in Ukraine, drones monitor the front line 24/7, giving the command center an unprecedented level of control over the situation on the battlefield. Reconnaissance of Supply Routes on foot to the Front Line The logistics of people and cargo are the cornerstone of any warfighting effort. Drones provide both the ability to preliminarily analyze the routes of approach and supply from the rear to the front line of combat operations, and the ability to escort logistics to quickly respond to any incidents. Drones significantly accelerate this critical phase, allowing for quick and high-quality analysis and the formation of supply routes with a flexible tactical approach, in case the enemy seizes control of one of them. Reconnaissance of attack routes UAVs are able to perform complex reconnaissance, their optical systems literally see through the terrain, which makes it possible to prepare a route for assault operations and exclude the possibility of the group falling into a minefield, ambush or other counter-attack operations planned by the enemy. Reconnaissance of the routes of advance to the attack should take place in three stages - a preliminary stage during the development of the assault plan, immediately before the assault, and during the assault, in order to exclude sudden counter-attack factors of the enemy. Accompanying assault teams in combat The most important factor for conducting successful assault operations is the accompaniment of assault groups in combat with the help of UAVs. First, it provides a completely different level of situational control and command of the assault team with minimal time lag between receiving information about the battlefield, giving an order to the assault team and its execution. Second, it can effectively improve the quality of assault operations and radically reduce personnel losses through full control and observation of all defensive initiatives on the part of the enemy and rapid countermeasures. Third, video recording of assault operations will give you very valuable and importantly reliable data for post-operational analysis of the operation.
