    Part 108 of the FAA’s proposed drone regulations is irrelevant unless we pay attention to the reality nobody seems to be discussing. Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations are exciting, and all the experts in the drone industry are eager to share opinions on the “spicy” parts of the operation. Topics like: - Airspace regulations - Detect and Avoid (DAA) systems - Restrictions based on population density When I talk about this with my team, Brian Potter likes to say, “Their heads are in the clouds.” And I agree. Everyone is focused on flight. But the flights can't happen unless we start paying attention to everything that needs to happen on the ground. - Docking Stations - Remote landing, charging, and deployment will be required to make BVLOS operation practical. There are a few viable options for the commercial market, but most manufacturers are only focused on federal customers with DoD requirements (and budgets).    That simply won’t work for commercial and public safety markets. - Remote Operations Centers - Security companies like ours have been the boots on the ground operating remote monitoring facilities for 40 years. We know the headaches that come with remote training and record keeping, along with the importance of backup power systems, redundant internet connectivity, alternative landing zones, and manual override capabilities. But the security industry seems to be completely absent from the conversation about BVLOS regulations. BVLOS isn't just about what happens in the sky. There are people, infrastructure, and systems that make it possible. Until we address these ground-level fundamentals, Part 108 is just regulations for equipment that can't actually operate.     Great news today from the US for the development of drone ops in the US. ANRA Technologies is very well placed to take advantage of this welcome initiative which at its heart has flexibility and safety as key components. FAA’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) titled "Normalizing Unmanned Aircraft Systems Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) Operations" introduces a long-anticipated regulatory framework designed to enable routine, scalable, and safe BVLOS operations in the U.S. national airspace. This proposal represents a pivotal shift from the FAA’s current exemption- and waiver-based approach to a more predictable, performance-based structure that reflects technological advancements in unmanned aviation. It aims to unlock the full potential of UAS applications—including package delivery, linear inspections, public safety missions, and precision agriculture—by defining clear requirements for aircraft design, operations, personnel, and supporting digital infrastructure. At the heart of the NPRM is a new Part 108, which sets the baseline for BVLOS operations, and Part 146, which formalizes the role of third-party automated data service providers such as those delivering UAS Traffic Management (UTM) functions. Together, these parts outline a risk-based regulatory approach, introduce flexible aircraft airworthiness acceptance pathways, and establish a structure for certifying service providers responsible for essential capabilities like strategic deconfliction and conformance monitoring. This NPRM is grounded in recommendations from the BVLOS Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) and responds to legislative direction under the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024. The proposed rule is intended to ensure both safety and innovation as UAS operations scale all over the US.     Our customers often ask: why hasn’t this been done before? Why now? The answer is simple: Europe’s regulatory environment has caught up with the vision. Until recently, building scalable aerial logistics networks in cities was nearly impossible. Not because of tech limitations but because of regulatory hurdles. That’s changed. In 2021, the EU created the world's most advanced drone regulatory framework, designed specifically for operations, not legacy aircraft. Today, it’s been tested and well-known! Under this framework: 🚁 Drones can fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) 📦 Urban operations with goods transport are explicitly permitted (as we’ve proven) ✅ The approval process is transparent and achievable, even for startups Compare that to the U.S., where approvals are still based on manned aviation rules from the 1970s. In Europe, we’re not retrofitting old laws. We’re building for the future! This wasn’t possible five years ago. It won’t be this open five years from now. The door is open right now, and only for those fast and focused enough to walk through it. That’s why we’ve been working with leading regulators since day one, and we’re already operating in SAIL III environments (urban). A clear fast track toward commercialization and market leadership. As it shares some foundations I've compared it against UK SORA. - Both aim for flexible, risk and performance based regulation of BVLOS drone operations. - Both emphasise systematic risk assessment, operational and technical mitigations, and supporting a scalable ecosystem with service providers. - Key differences lie in regulatory mechanics, required demonstrations & assessments, and roles of operators and pilots. - The UK uses a structured, SORA-driven application and approval process. The FAA relies on a permit/certification system with prescriptive sideboards and company-level accountability. - Both foresee third-party deconfliction and data service (“automated data service providers”), but the FAA is proposing more direct involvement/oversight, especially in dense and urban environments It will be interesting to see if the rules harmonise in the future to more easily allow international deployments.
