    𝗔𝗿𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱: 𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Based on Ukraine’s battlefield lessons, the U.S. Army is pivoting—fast. 🔹 The Army Transformation Initiative is the most ambitious overhaul since the Cold War. Over five years, it will shift U.S. divisions from traditional mechanized formations toward distributed drone-centric warfare—without asking for more money. 🔹 Each combat division will receive ~1,000 small unmanned systems for ISR, strike, resupply, and jamming. The aim: make drones as ubiquitous as rifles. 🔹 Trials at Hohenfels, Germany replicated Ukraine-style combat: swarms of FPVs, live ISR feeds, cold-weather drone failures, and forward-deployed kill loops. Conventional command structures buckled under the new pace of warfare. 🔹 $36B will be reallocated by cancelling legacy platforms: • Humvee procurement ends • JLTV and M10 light tank programs cancelled • Older Apache helicopters retired • Civilian cuts included 📡 Instead, the Army is investing in: • Small drones for recon, strike, and logistics • COTS-powered digital battle networks • $3B in counter-UAS and electronic warfare • New infantry squad vehicles and mobility tools 🔹 Gen.     The rapid rise of combat drones illustrates a classic pattern described by Clayton Christensen. Drones represent a 𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲: initially dismissed as inferior to established systems, yet capable of reshaping the entire competitive landscape. For decades, the Western defense industry focused on increasingly sophisticated missiles, precision bombs, and air-defense systems. These technologies became extremely advanced—and extremely expensive. In that environment, small and relatively crude drones seemed strategically irrelevant. Yet disruption often starts exactly there. Take the Iranian Shahed drones now widely used in conflicts. They are cheap, simple, and can be produced in large numbers. Their real power lies not in individual performance but in scale and swarm tactics. When launched in large waves, they overwhelm traditional air-defense systems designed to intercept a limited number of high-value missiles. Using million-dollar interceptors against drones costing a few tens of thousands of dollars is economically unsustainable. This is classic Christensen logic: incumbents optimize for high-end performance while the disruptive technology improves rapidly in a different dimension—in this case cost, scalability, and operational flexibility. But the real lesson is not only technological.Ukraine has shown that the decisive capability lies in how drones are used: agile combat strategies, distributed command structures, and operators who can adapt in real time. Human intelligence, battlefield learning, and tactical creativity matter as much as the hardware itself. It all has to go together. For Europe and the wider West, the implication is that defense strategies must shift from a narrow focus on expensive platforms toward learning systems that combine low-cost technology, rapid experimentation, and shared operational intelligence. And this knowledge already exists: Ukraine today is probably the world’s most advanced laboratory for drone warfare. Western militaries should accelerate collaboration and learning from that experience. The rise of low-cost drones and other low-end digitalized warfare technologies also forces a reconsideration of how military budgets are optimized. The Border Security Force (BSF) has inaugurated a School of Drone Warfare in Madhya Pradesh—aimed at training elite “𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘀” and “𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀.” This spans UAV operations, anti-drone warfare, surveillance, and more. Earlier this year, the Indian Army announced that every battalion will soon have its own drone platoon, part of a modernisation push. Across the board—from infantry to artillery—units are being restructured to embed drones into frontline operations. What does this mean for the drone industry?  • Deep integration: Drones are no longer just tools—they're becoming 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 components of the force. With dedicated training schools and embedded platoons, the demand for reliable, robust systems is soaring.  • The best systems: As drones become mission-critical, quality assurance, support infrastructure, and operational reliability will make or break industry success.     One of the most persistent misunderstandings in defence is treating drones as a separate capability rather than part of a much larger operational system. The latest figures from Ukraine are another reminder of how much warfare has changed. According to Ukrainian reporting, drones were responsible for the overwhelming majority of Russian personnel and equipment losses during the period analysed. That does not mean tanks, artillery, aircraft, ships, air defence systems, or missiles have become irrelevant. Quite the opposite. What it demonstrates is how unmanned systems increasingly influence the effectiveness, survivability, and employment of every other capability on the battlefield. Drones are no longer simply strike platforms. They provide reconnaissance, targeting, battle damage assessment, force protection, logistics support, communications relay, maritime surveillance, electronic warfare support, and increasingly long-range strategic effects deep inside adversary territory. The cost-effectiveness aspect matters as well. At a time when missile inventories remain constrained, artillery ammunition production struggles to keep pace with demand, and major platforms continue to increase in cost, relatively inexpensive unmanned systems provide additional options for commanders. Not because they replace everything else, but because they help preserve and enhance the effectiveness of more expensive capabilities. The real lesson from Ukraine is therefore not "drones versus traditional systems." It is the growing importance of combining capabilities across domains. How do drones support air defence? How do they protect ships and critical infrastructure? How do they improve situational awareness for artillery and manoeuvre forces? How do they help preserve scarce missiles, ammunition, and high-value platforms for the missions where those assets are truly required? Those are the questions shaping modern warfare. The most effective forces will not be those with the most drones or the most traditional platforms.     ++Defence News Highlights: Türkiye Sets the Pace in Naval Drone Warfare++ At recent #NATO multilateral military exercises and operations, #Türkiye demonstrated not just advanced drone technology, but a mature and operational armed uncrewed aerial vehicle (#UAV) naval and amphibious operational concepts. By deploying armed, shipborne UAVs from the Turkish Navy's unique #drone #carrier TCG Anadolu, the Turkish Armed Forces and domestic defence industry showed clear leadership in how uncrewed systems can be integrated and employed in real-world military operations. For the first time in NATO history, an armed naval UAV executed complete operational strike cycles during major alliance exercises and operations such as Steadfast Dart and Eastern Sentry. For example, during the Steadfast Dart exercise, a Baykar Technologies #Bayraktar TB3 launched from TCG Anadolu completed a full mission cycle, including a precision strike on a surface target with ROKETSAN MAM‑L guided munitions, before recovering to the ship under NATO control procedures, proving both its strike potential and its viability as a persistent airborne sensor integrated to allied command and control. Turkish UAVs also flew more than two hundred #autonomous sorties from TCG Anadolu in harsh Baltic winter conditions. Repeated live-fire engagements against maritime targets validated their utility as frontline naval strike assets, while an eight-hour, long-range mission conducted alongside German and Italian Eurofighter Typhoons further demonstrated credible manned–unmanned integration (#MUMT) capabilities. Moreover, TCG Anadolu's - which was originally intended to be a V/STOL aircraft carrier for Lockheed Martin #F35B combat aircraft - evolution into a dedicated drone carrier underscores Türkiye’s resilience and innovative approach to power projection. By demonstrating sustained armed UAV operations from a short-deck amphibious platform, Türkiye has demonstrated a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional carrier aviation. Equally important is the level of integration between the Turkish Armed Forces and the domestic #defence #industry with UAV operations being conducted on board the carrier by industry personnel in lockstep with their naval counterparts. I have long been a big fan of the Turkish defence industry, particularly for the way it has combined strategic clarity, industrial ambition, and sustained execution over time. From a professional standpoint, I find the industry’s emphasis on self‑reliance, rapid iteration, and operational relevance especially compelling. Turkish companies have demonstrated an ability to move from concept to deployment at a pace that many more established defence ecosystems struggle to match, while still competing credibly in international markets.
