Ryan Gardner shared this🚀 Great to bring the South’s business leaders together at our Hays Bristol office to host the Regional CBI (Confederation of British Industry) Council last week, led by Carmen Peacock and Ben Rhodes. A brilliant discussion with senior leaders across the region - sharing insight, challenging thinking, and focusing on what really matters for our businesses in the region today. Despite the challenges, there was strong energy around opportunity, growth, and how we continue to evolve our businesses to stay ahead. Demand to hire remains, with a key role for government in removing barriers, lowering costs, and enabling growth. Looking forward to continuing the conversation in September at Renishaw and seeing the progress we’ve made. Celebration, connection, and lots of fun from start to finish 🎉🤝 We often say a business is only as good as its people, but nowhere is that truer than at Hays. The camaraderie and energy in the room were immediate and unmistakable, reminding me exactly why bringing some our best people together to learn, share, and recognise achievements is so important 🌟 I’m already looking forward to our Q3 event in the Spring — hopefully with a little less wind and rain 🌦️- but above all, I left feeling incredibly proud of the brilliant people we have across our business. Ryan Gardner shared thisSilk Wood Community Planting Project | Forestry England 🌳 It’s easy to look at a busy diary and think, “no time.” But making time for social value really matters. Spending the day with colleagues and the brilliant team at Forestry England at Westonbirt was honestly therapeutic and great fun. Together we planted 112 new trees in nest formations as part of the Silk Wood community project, a small act with a long-term impact for biodiversity, wellbeing and future visitors. The weather held (mostly!), we got muddy, laughed a lot, and left proud of doing something purposeful as a team. Thank you to Amanda Grist, alongside her team at Forestry England for hosting. Ryan Gardner shared thisHonoured to have joined the panel hosted by our very own Amanda Whicher at our Hays #WomenInTechConnect in partnership with Beauty Pie — a powerful afternoon of real talk, reflection, and connection. 📉 While the numbers show a tech talent gap is widening, the stories shared on the day tell me things can change for the better — when we choose collaboration over competition. It was a privilege to be part of that conversation. 🧠 We unpacked the perception gap and challenged assumptions. I learnt that nothing beats an open and honest dialogue with someone to help master your narrative — and it reminded me that vulnerability isn’t gendered, it’s universal. 🤝 As a male ally, I left with a renewed sense of responsibility — to listen more, speak up when it counts, and help create space for others to thrive. Ryan Gardner liked thisRyan Gardner liked thisLast week we brought together South West members for our Q2 Regional Council meeting and Future Leaders Network, to discuss priorities for the CBI's Autumn Budget submission. It was striking how closely the discussions aligned across both groups. The strongest message from members was that reducing the cost of doing business is a priority, particularly employment and energy costs. There was also significant discussion around labour market participation, youth employment, planning and infrastructure delivery, investment incentives, skills funding, AI readiness and the need for greater clarity on the UK's long-term economic strategy. A particular thank you to Carmen Peacock, CBI South West Regional Chair for leading the meeting and Louise Hellem, CBI Chief Economist, for facilitating discussions on the CBI's plans for the Autumn Budget. Thanks also to Adriana Curca, CBI Economics Director, for providing members with an economic update and guiding a valuable discussion on the current state of trade and the wider economic outlook. Ryan Gardner liked thisRyan Gardner liked thisI am deeply honoured and humbled to take office as the new Vice-President of ICAEW for 2026/27. As a member in business, I only truly re-engaged with ICAEW 10 years ago when I returned from living in New York - and my regret is that I did not do it much sooner. The immense value and professional camaraderie I found since coming back into the fold is something I am incredibly passionate about sharing. It is never too late to re-engage with your professional body. I am grateful to the Council members who voted to elect me to this office. While I owe them a great debt of thanks, my focus looks firmly outward: I am committed to representing and serving all of our diverse, global membership. Every voice across our worldwide membership matters. Stepping into this role, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible legacy of our Institute. When you look at the early Presidents of ICAEW, you are looking at the literal architects of modern global finance-pioneers like William Deloitte (Deloitte), Arthur Cooper (PwC), Frederick Whinney (EY), and Sir William Barclay Peat (KPMG). To follow in the footsteps of such individuals who founded "The Big 4" is both deeply grounding and a massive reminder of the significance of this role. That rich history makes my own journey feel even more unique (and humble). Throughout my career, I have been driven by three things: helping people, supporting global businesses, and driving transformation. I look forward to bringing these passions to the leadership team as we champion our core strategy around the 3Rs: maintaining *RELEVANCE* in a digital age, enhancing our *REPUTATION* as leaders and advisors, and increasing *RESILIENCE* for our members. It is worth noting that today ICAEW's reputation remains strong with board membership in over 80% of both FTSE 100 & FTSE 250 Boardrooms. This moment of transition is also one of celebration. Huge congratulations to Caroline Smale on becoming our 122nd President. From a personal perspective Caroline continues to be an inspiration. I am also excited to work with our new Deputy President, Rob Tindle. A massive thank you to Derek Blair for his leadership and service as President over the past year. Finally, I would like to thank Sarah Henry, who gave me the support, confidence, encouragement and maybe that nudge I needed to “go for it”. Sometimes we all need that little bit of encouragement. The finance world is evolving rapidly, from AI to global economic shifts. Together with our members and partners worldwide, I am eager to get to work to continue building an inclusive, forward-looking profession.
