Jacob Johnson shared thisThree Tennessee startups have received a combined $300,000 through the inaugural Tennessee Technology Advancement Consortium (TTAC) Technology Maturation Grant, a new commercialization program designed to help university-developed technologies advance beyond proof of concept and toward commercial readiness. The inaugural awardees include Terra Watts, Minco Technologies Inc., and FloUV, representing innovations in energy infrastructure, unmanned aircraft propulsion, and food safety. Each company is affiliated with a Tennessee research institution and demonstrated both proof of concept and commercial interest through industry engagement. The TTAC Technology Maturation Grant fills an important stage in the commercialization pathway by supporting startups that have already validated their technology but require additional development before attracting broader investment or achieving market deployment. Technology maturation programs are becoming an increasingly valuable component of university commercialization ecosystems by helping startups reduce technical and commercial risk while strengthening readiness for follow-on funding, strategic partnerships, and long-term market adoption. When I started, I saw huge potential in bringing together TenU's members to making university innovation better. What I didn't foresee was just how willing people would be to work across institutional and sector boundaries to tackle shared challenges. Together we've transformed the sector, building a lasting legacy. Under my leadership, we've: 🔸 Redefined spinout investment through the #USIT Guides, now adopted by 70 UK universities and used internationally as a blueprint for faster, more transparent investment. 🔸 Turned #PoC programmes from a niche sector concern into a national conversation, doubling funding and bringing together universities, investors, industry, funders and charities around a shared agenda. 🔸 Developed 47 future leaders across 19 technology transfer offices in five countries, while supporting professionals from a further 32 organisations via mentoring through the #TenUFLP and #TenURISE programmes. 🔸 Connected thousands of TT practitioners, investors, founders and policymakers through #TenUHosts events and podcasts. 🔸 Convened stakeholders across the entire UK innovation ecosystem to celebrate the sector’s growing contribution to society and the economy. True #collaboration takes thought, patience and persistence. I've been incredibly fortunate to work alongside people who have shared that commitment, challenged my thinking, and helped turn ambitious visions into outcomes far greater than the sum of their contributing parts. I've learned an enormous amount along the way, and I'm deeply grateful to everyone who shared their time, expertise and trust. It's been a blast. 💥 🚀 As one chapter closes, another begins. I'm excited to be taking many of the lessons from TenU to my next challenge: supporting the Singapore government to build a national technology transfer alliance. Big news for UWM’s future engineers and scientists! Nearly $7 million has been designated in the 2025–2027 Wisconsin capital budget to launch the design phase of the Engineering & Neuroscience Project at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. This exciting initiative will: 🔹 Renovate the first–third floors of the Engineering & Mathematical Sciences (EMS) Building into open, collaborative, student-focused spaces. 🔹 Relocate the UWM Planetarium. 🔹 Demolish the outdated Physics Building. 🔹 Build a new shared #STEM facility for Engineering, Psychology, and Neuroscience. The design work will set the stage for advocating for construction funding in the 2027–2029 capital budget. “When completed, the project will put our college in a position to attract more students and better serve the state’s technologically advanced workforce needs.” — Andy Graettinger, Associate Dean for Research, College of Engineering & Applied Science With 80% of UWM graduates staying in Wisconsin, this investment strengthens our ability to produce the skilled talent that fuels the state’s economy.
