James Jay liked thisJames Jay liked thisIt was nearly closing time at the Dairy Queen my parents ran, and I was ready to go home. My coworkers and I put everything away, wiped it all down, and were about to lock up when a family arrived in the parking lot. With the minute hand about to strike 11, my peers and I looked to my father, wearing expressions that must have conveyed the question on our minds: “Please, can we close?” “Let’s take their order,” he said. My father wasn’t a taskmaster. He kept the doors open because he understood the importance of treating every customer with respect. His decision made business sense. In a small town, you don’t have many opportunities to win new customers after the first year. Why end a relationship when you can improve one? It was also the right thing to do. “They drove all the way here to get ice cream for their family,” he explained. “The last thing we want to do is lock the door in front of their faces.” I’ve carried this customer-first mindset from the cramped counter at Dairy Queen all the way to the offices of InterSystems. It may not be a revolutionary concept, but it’s never steered me wrong.
