When the value creation opportunity is just so obvious that, if you can execute, you're talking about trillions, not billions. Xona is one of those investments for me where we led their Series A and doubled down on their subsequent rounds. It was thus a true pleasure to sit down with CEO and Co-Founder Brian Manning for the latest episode of DeepTech Unleashed. For a long time, GPS was considered a ‘solved problem,’ ubiquitous and free! But when we look closely, a glaring vulnerability often goes unnoticed: We are massively reliant on GPS, which has fundamental architectural flaws: poor signal strength, insecure communication, and vulnerability to jamming and spoofing by adversaries. So, how does Xona address new and emerging challenges in GPS? This led to a fascinating discussion with Brian, in which we covered: - The Entrepreneurial Spark: From growing up in a family plumbing business to working at SpaceX on the Falcon rocket thrust structure, and how those formative experiences shaped Brian's journey. - The Limitations of GPS: Why modern automated infrastructure requires an entirely new foundation layer. It is the honor of my life to build alongside this team. Paul Asel liked thisPaul Asel liked thisAs an investor in chips and hardware for 20+ years, it has been awesome to see new optimism and capital come in to these sectors in this age of AI. But there is also a nagging worry on whether the bullish valuations we see have fundamentals attached or just Silicon Valley hype. We got to discuss this and more with entrepreneurs, experts and co-investors from across physical AI at a dinner we co-hosted with PwC last week. We didn't resolve the bubble question, of course, but we left with important insights to frame our investment process in the coming months: 1) Physical AI has an expanded aperture compared to the last robotics boom in warehouses and manufacturing a decade ago. Autonomous driving has been a significant market expansion, and defense, healthcare, and consumer applications will all be market adders that can justify a new horizontal rail. Infrastructure software companies that were previously locked in by distribution and small market size MAY make sense in this new world. 2) While the open internet and open-source repositories provided training data for foundational models, data in industrial and supply chain environments are closed within enterprises. Entrepreneurs are bridging this gap by offering innovative services that deliver value today while also gathering training data for the future. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
